Shape up before you sail!

Great job on the weight loss everyone!!!!

One of my friends told me last night that she wants to get a group together to run a 5k. At this point, I can't even run a half a mile!!!! :rotfl: I think I'm going to start the couch to 5k program and see how it goes. Even if we don't do the 5k, at least I will lose some weight and shape up in the process!

What is the couch to 5k program? I'm with you that I couldn't do half a mile but I have a co-worker who runs marathons and she is always talking about me training for one.

That would be frustrating! Are you just doing aerobics or are you strength training too? Maybe you are bulidng muscle and losing fat. If so, the scale would show you are gaining weight even though you are slimming down. I'm dreading my first palateu. That is usually when I get frustrated and give up.

I do both cardio and weight training. I do an hour of cardio 4-5 days a week, and weight training 1-2 days a week.

Plateaus are definitely no fun.

I googled "couch to 5K" and found a lot of info. It's a 2 month program that builds you up to running 5k. You just do the workout 3 days a week. Week 1 is running for 60 seconds and walking 90 seconds, alternately, for 20 minutes. I even found podcasts for each week for my iPod that has music and cues for when to walk and run. I think I'm going to try to start the program next week. Surely I can fit 30 minutes, 3 times a week, into my schedule!!!!:rotfl:

I'm tempted to try it too. The podcasts are a GREAT find! That would make it so much easier. My problem is that I have two small kids and dh works different hours each day so I can't set aside a rigid workout schedule. Do you think it matter if the days are everyother day or could I just do them when I can?

I'm definitely subscribing to this one...my cruise is in September and I have 20-30 lbs I want to lose before I go. I was a Weight Watcher in '06 and lost 50 lbs. I've managed to keep those off, but I never did reach goal...well, that's my goal this time around. Goal is my goal. Nice and redundant, yeah? :)

My DH is a workout-aholic, and is naturally interested in all of the really active excursions for our cruise...giving me double motivation to whip myself into better shape (since, you know, the dreaded swimsuit is motivation #1.)

I'm jealous of all of you WiiFit-ers...I need to get one of those! That actually sounds like a workout program I could stick with (Though, I'm not sure how much I'm going to like watching my Mii swell up like a balloon...hehe).

Good luck to one and all! We can do it!

Welcome! Wow on losing 50lbs! That is awesome. If you can do that you can do 20-30 and reach your goal-goal :lmao:

I love the Wii Fit. It was definitely worth the $$. Even on days I don't feel like working out I try and play one of the other Wii games. At least it gets me up and moving.

Here's some info for all you WiiFit people out there. I love the Free Step but wasn't sure that it was doing anything. I got a MIO watch yesterday and monitored my heart rate while I was doing it. It stayed at 65-75% of my maximum heart rate which is good! I don't use weights but I do arm movements. I also do it on the fastest pace. I was happy to see that I wasn't wasting my time doing it everyday.

The thing that I like about the Wii Fit game and balance board is that even if I don't feel like doing it, I force myself. And then, once I get going, I enjoy it enough to keep it up. I do a half hour of aerobics, then I take a break, and then I do another half hour. I would like to do more, but with my Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis, I have to be careful.

Can anyone give me some kind of idea how many calories you typically burn in an hour of Wii Fit?

I have been thinking about investing in one, but I am not sure how much I'd get out of it. Usually, when I do fitness videos, I never feel like I am getting as good a workout as I do at the gym.

I don't know how many calories you burn, but I can tell you that with an hour of aerobic exercise a day, my weight consistantly drops (even if I slip up a bit with my diet).

Hi There, :wave2:
:rotfl: This is great!
I have a lot more weight to lose than everyone here, but I'm going to be realistic about it. In the last 10 yrs (since I got married and had 3 kids) I have gained 100lbs!!! YUK!!!! So, that's my goal, to lose that 100lbs. I started Jan1st and i'm down nearly 20 lbs. The first 10 came off quick, since then 1-3 lbs a week. I joined Curves, and I've been doing a couch to marathon runner program (weather permitting, the snow has been crazy this Jan in Ohio) and I've been watching what I eat... for me that's the hard part:scared: , I like food. But, I'm trying to stay at 1500cals a day now.
So, I know all that weight will take a while, but we cruise Memorial Day weekend on the Wonder and I'd love to lose 30 lbs more by then, we have about 15wks I think so it's doable with hard work!!!
Any suggestions or tips would be great! :p

Hey guys, you can do a 5k easy, I was 270 lbs for years, my workmates all done half marathons, That was my goal for when I lost wt, I had a to do when I am normal wt list, lots of fun things including disney cruise but DEF not limited to;) Any how I have done several now and I am entering my 1st proper marathon this year, you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to.

Uuuuuuuuuugh! I gained it all back!!! Amazing what one week on the Magic will do to you!

I am dreading my weigh-in this week :scared1: I broke down and ate a McDonald's Happy Meal with my kids Monday. That wouldn't have been too bad if I hadn't gone to my mom's last night (she was watching my kids) and she had food. I mean the good 'ole homecooked full spread. I didn't eat a whole meal but had some corn fritters (baked though), a handful of fries (again, baked) and a brownie - o.k. two brownies. And my Dad made funnel cakes  for everyone. They were little ones but still... I am shamed! I've got a double workout planned today and hopefully that will undo some of the damage. I need to lose 4lbs a week to meet my goal. So far it hasn't been a problem but this week has tested my willpower and is WINNING :sad2:

I'm still plugging away, but very frustrated at how my medication is slowing the weight loss. I lost 15 pounds last spring with a minimal change to my diet. When I started taking medication, I put on 25! Now I am dieting (Slim Fast) and exercising (approximately 4 hours of aerobics a week), and it is going VERY slow. I am losing, but not as quickly as before - and I am doing a lot more! It's an uphill battle, but I am determined!

Thats a HUGE goal, maybe you should rethink, that goal alone could be putting you off, good luck and happy dieting.

Hello everyone,

Been reading quite a few posts, you guys are inspiring! We were booked for the Magic in September, but then spring break resident rates came out and I find myself having to look OK by March 21! :scared1:

I weighed the most I've ever weighed the other day at about 166, I would like to drop at least 10 of those pounds (2 lbs a week) before I leave. I look decent, though not perfect, around 150 for my build and height, but I know that's probably realistically unattainable. Seems like it goes on so easy and comes off so much harder these days!

We have a Wii Fit and I have pretty much ignored it because you can't program the exercises "in a row" but I see that people are having success with it, so maybe I better relook. For those of you who use it, what are you doing for a workout? Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

HI - just joining in on this thread as I have quite a bit of excess baggage at the moment which I need to get rid of. I have been a little bit overweight for a while, and on my last cruise in October I found another 7lbs, and then since then I have found another 7lbs - so I would really love to lose at least 20lbs before my next cruise in October 2010. That is my goal. I would also love to become fitter, as at the moment (and since October) I have done no exercise whatsoever. We have had a really tough year with 3 close family bereavements and I have lost all motivation.

So my plan is this - healthy eating starting on 23rd February (after half term and meal out for DDs birthday), to return to my tap dancing class, to commence taking a fast walk every day for at least 30 mins, hopefully to purchase a Wii Fit and to take up swimming at the local health club.

Last time I lost weight (7lbs in summer 2008) I kept below a daily calorie intake of 1400 calories and I managed to do this quite easily by keeping a note of the calorie content of everything that passed my lips. So I will plan to do this again, but also to try and eat a much more healthy diet overall, which should boost my energy levels and hopefully help my moods aswell.

Looking forward to sharing the journey with you all - best of luck to everyone involved in this thread!

Hi everyone......

I'd like to join in the discussion if I could.....

I am a HUGE fan of all things Disney, and have posted on the DISBOARDS before, but never in the W.I.S.H. section. A friend of mine actually told me about W.I.S.H. a long time ago but I've never been motivated enough to post.

I've actually been on 3 Disney cruises.......

The 7 day Western in July 06

The 11 night Mediterranean in June 07

and a 3 night Caribbean in March 08

I am booked on the Disney Baltic Cruise in summer 2010 and may possibly be doing a New Years Eve cruise in Dec 09.

I definitely need to lose weight.......have had a weight problem for quite some time. I love food, use food to celebrate and to drown my sorrows at times. I am committed to shedding some pounds this spring. I don't know if I can make it to my goal weight, but I'm going to set a goal of 20 pounds to start. Ideally I need to lose 75 pounds, but that just seems so hard when I look at it in it's entirety. So I'm starting with 20 and going from there. LOL.

I love love love the Disney cruises. But when looking back at the pictures, I cherish the memories and hate how I look in the pics. Maybe I can change that for my Baltic Cruise!

I am a 34 year old mom of 2 boys, aged 6 and 8 and happily married to the sweetest, most supportive guy I could ask for. He's trying to shed some pounds as well.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and to share excitement over weight loss and our upcoming cruises!
