Shanghai Trouble?

Do you honestly think that Joe Smith in St. Louis gives a crap what happens in Shanghai in regards to Disney getting ripped off? Sure, we'll bloviate all we want on this board about how people will rise up and the government won't let it happen, but it's happened so many damn times over the past 2 decades that no one bats an eye.

As lockedout said earlier, even if this is a success, it will have no bearing on any of the parks here in the US. If it isn't a success, they can blame it for lack of investment here. Has DisneySea or Tokyo Disney or Disneyland Paris had a huge impact on rides/experiences here?

This can only help Disney investors if it works...and that is a BIG if.

Disney does not pay for anything that happens in Tokyo so that would not have any affects on the U.S.

Our companies ... Sony ... ???
Sony Pictures is an American based media company that is held within an a holding company Sony based in Japan. You'll notice I used the short names of each the companies. Sony Pictures is a descendant of American companies and is still run as an American business. It's American.

Never on this magnitude, and with such a well known beloved company. Americans would react vehemently if that happened.

I think you're right about Disney Fans, but I don't think most Americans would give a rip.

This.

So long we can keep getting our cheap products and low prices so that our paychecks seem like they actually have purchasing power Joe Blow isn't going to say squat.

Why haven't there been like any maps or plans or practically anything on the net on this project and its (supossidly) so far along? Is this how its going to be dealing with the Chinese once its open. I'll be honest, as a Disney Parks fan, I wanted nothing to do with the Chinese since jump street on the SHDLR project. The people of China want Disney? How about they go to Hong Kong, Japan, Paris, Aniheim, or Orlando? Why did an entire new theme park HAVE to be built right now, and why there? The middle east (UAE/Dubai in particular is huge for all worldwide brands right now, and growing rapidly). If not looked there, TWDC should have re-invested that $5.5 million into the 7 theme parks state-side. Could you imagine what that kind capital would have been able to do at let's say Disney's Hollywood Studios (which is in desperate need of an overhaul), or even making updates to EPCOT's Future World, expanding World Showcase (finally), or even renovating a few of the older resorts (the All-Stars come to mind). This was a tremendous gamble by the Company, and we'll see if it pays off come 2016, or whenever this disaster finally opens. I think Iger may have wanted to see this through and thought it would be a gold mine for the Company and his legacy before he retires as CEO... (much like Eisner did during the 'Disney Decade' in FL, and the construction of then EuroDisney).

There has been vague concept art and then leaked plans of course but nothing officially released by either Disney or Shendi. They are behind in construction as well it was originally supposed to open at the end of this year and is now slated for early May 2016. Also don't forget Disney added $800 million to the project for "more attractions" but based on the plans I've heard nothing more has or will be added. That tells you that was for budget overruns. Eisner actually started this project. The Shanghai development has been going on for a very long time.

I didn't know this was started under Eisner, wow... Wonder if they had dumped so much time/resouces behind it that Iger didn't want to pull the plug?

It was basically just talks between Shanghai and Disney during Eisner nothing big It was then under Iger that a deal was made.

I don't think the American Public, Business Community, or Government would stand for it. Americans are a patriotic bunch. It would be a major symbolic blow.

Trade secrets and intellectual property are considerably less concrete than brick and mortor. It's lower profile. You can also bet the United States public would be whipped into a frenzy if a Disneyland of all things was stolen.

Also companies on their own home turf always have an advantage. Nature of the beast sort of thing.

My friend we usually agree, but not this time.

I think this is the site, but I don't know how old this image is.

There have been plenty of construction photos and maps etc. but nothing official from either Disney or Shendi. Themeparx is the best resource for Shanghai construction pictures.

Lines at grand openings do not necessarily indicate success. I would be more interested in seeing the people who are exiting the stores. Are they all carrying bags of merchandise?

Not just a line. A mile long line. So long that they went to the end and closed the line because there were more people then they could get in the store in that day after it opened at 1pm. That is not a normal grand opening. And 4 days later... the queue was only an hour.

The people at Disney know what they are doing. And Shanghai is a great move. It is clear how China is changing and how Disney movies and products are loved. Disney has also learned to respect and embrace the culture surrounding each park.

That's for sure. He doesn't strike me as smooth enough... Lol No, but it's really as simple as our government and our corporations putting up a fit because they're ripping us off. You yourself like to point out the influence that US corporations hold on the government. Imagine the fury of WDC. It wouldn't be pretty as US and European corporations turned off the money spigots and focused attention elsewhere. Also like I said the State department could squeeze any Chinese aquisitions of US assets.

I don't know what country you speak of when you indicate that either the government or the corporations can put up a unified front...

It hasn't been that way for 30+ years at a minimum. All out for themselves...very little collective good unless its a catastrophic crisis scenario.

I remember similar lines in the later 80's/early 90's when McDonald's opened...

Same in Moscow...miraculous queues that went on forever.

It's the same to this day... I can only assume.

Good example! The Pushkin Square McDonald’s is the world’s busiest McDonald’s restaurant serving more than 20,000 customers daily. It opened in 1990 and the 20,000 number is from 2010. I don't have more current figures. McDonalds recently opened its 500th restaurant in Russia. There have been battles with Putin supporting a Golden Arches knock-off, but successful is an understatement.

The world is changing very fast when it comes to business and particularly entertainment. Disney is doing the right thing as many theme park companies are all trying to get in China and other Asian countries.

Lol...Disney in china has NOTHING to do with us whatsoever... Other than their profit margin on the crap in WOD and walmart.

I love you and all...but lets just watch this thing as spectators and not break out arms trying to slap back of the suits here...
