Shady viewing spot for Festival of Fantasy?

The dragon does breath fire in Frontierland! Check out my profile picture. It was taken in Frontierland. I only wish I was on the shady side of the street.

Thanks for pointing that out. Where were you sitting?

Does anyone know if he breathes fire at predetermined spots around the route or just every so often?

We were between Pecos Bill's and Country Bear Jamboree on the sunny side of the street. It was last December, so I can't remember exactly where we were sitting.

It's a good question to ask as I thought the fire breathing dragon was really magical!

You got a great photo of it! I'd love to do the same. We probably won't get a second chance to watch it for some time.

If you can time it right, there's a crossover from the Tiki Bird/Magic Carpet area to Country Bear Hall. Last summer, we were able to slip through the crossover and into the Country Bear stroller parking area just as the 3 pm parade was approaching. The kids got front row with a less than 30 second wait. Not too bad.

This is what we ended up doing a couple of weeks ago, and we sort of came upon it by accident. We forgot about the parade and were passing through the breezeway when they were just closing off the entryway for the parade to pass by. So we were able to be right at the rope, albeit in the sun, and it was awesome! The dragon breathed fire at that spot as well. :thumbsup2

From the spot I mentioned in front of the shooting arcade he breathed fire about 25 feet in front of us and the just past.

To get an idea of the spot, here's a pic I took. Notice sunny across the street, not on ours. This was really the best spot I've ever had for any parade before.

Here's a photo of the Frontierland space. Where's the safe spot everyone is mentioning?

That planter to the left of the photo is where my cousin and I sat this past May 6. We staked our spot for about an hour. That tree in the planter provides enough shade, as long as you are sitting on the right side of the planter, facing the path. We saw the dragon breathe fire from our spot.

If you are coming through the walk through from the Magic Carpets into Frontierland we watched it just a little to the left of the cut through, it was perfect and shady. Across the street was definitely in the sun. They start taping out the seating areas at least 30 minutes prior so you will know where you are and are not allowed to sit. I will say that the dragon did breathe fire, but it was just a bit passed us, so wasn't as dramatic as when we watched it in the Fast Pass area, but the shade was very nice, and I liked that you are at the beginning of the parade and didn't have to wait for it to come all the way down Main St. I flippin' love that parade.

Last time we were there, Country Bear Jamboree was closed and we say right outside its doors. It was AWESOME

I can confirm this, I watched her breathe fire several times as she passed us at Diamond Horseshoe on Thursday.

I imagine winds have to be below a certain threshold for her to do this though.

Perhaps this is what caused the initial determination that it wasn't done in Frontierland. I remember last year before our trip it was posted in at least one thread that the area wasn't wide enough. It didn't sound right to me, but it was what people said, and then when we were there we didn't see any fire breathing in Frontierland, so we assumed what we had read was correct. It is entirely possible that it is wind / weather related though, I didn't make any notes of the weather on the day we saw the parade from Frontierland.

Is there a specific spot/planter/etc? My nightmare is for us to get set up somewhere and then, with 30 mins until parade time, a CM says, "you can't sit here during the parade."

Because i used to work at that attraction I know they wont let you stand on the covered walkway between Bears and Pecos Bill, simply because they want to keep it clear for foot traffic. One place i can think of is the main street train station. it has a few chairs, but the only thing is that you have to steak out your spot about 2 hours before, because a lot of people like to use that location for video cameras (and because its shady). I got lucky there one time, but I decided I could sit for 2 hours, then when I came back, my spot was gone (and this was in 2006, and its far more crowded now!)

We were there on the day the parade debuted; it was in the 80's, brilliant sun, crowded as anything, and Dapper Day (lots of guests in turn-of-the-twentieth-century finery) to boot. After 10 minutes in the sun on the curb between the Plaza and the hub, I had DH hold my spot while I bought a nice Mickey umbrella in the Emporium. Instant $12 shade for the rest of our 90 minute wait. Of course I told those behind us that I would collapse the umbrella once the parade started (and I did).

Our spot of choice is the porch next to LTT, lovely benches while we wait and then we can stand up at the edge of the porch when the parade comes through. This puts us at a level above the heads of those in front of us.

We ended up choosing a shaded spot on one of the porches in Frontierland. I believe it was in front of a shop of some sort. I know every time the door opened I got a rush of cool air and really appreciated. I asked a CM in the area where the ropes would be going up and could tell this spot would not have standing room between the porch and the edge of the parade route because it jutted out a bit from the other porches. It was perfect. I got to rest on the porch in the shade and nobody was able to sneak in front of us at the last minute.

The view was outstanding.

Nice! Hope you had a great trip--I know it was short at WDW.

Thanks! It was a crazy crowded but great day in the MK. The beach wasn't too bad either. :beach:

I hope you had a great trip too. :)
