Our first stay at the SOG is coming up in January (1/20 - 1/25). I need some tips on whether to make any special room requests. I am guessing that we won't be using the pool much, if at all due to the temps in January. Is there an ideal location for easy access to the bus stop and the parking garage (we will have a rental car). Is any area more noisy? Is the new section any different than the old section? It is my understanding that all of the rooms in the older section were renovated when they added the new section.

Thanks!

We just returned from our stay at SOG, room 6138. It is the new section overlooking the golf course. It is convenient to the parking garage and the lobby. You have to remember that the hotel is large and spread out. We were a good walk from the pool and the take out restaurant. We were basically in a quiet area except for the screaming child you would hear every now and then. Also, the new pipes sound like helicoptors every now and then...Be prepared for that. Nothing you can't live with.

I'm sure they can't be worse than the actual helicopters and planes that fly over our house multiple times daily....we directly live next to the base. :D Who am I to complain, the rent is cheap in a flight zone lol.

I can't wait for our first stay at SOG 01/04-01/09 for a quick getaway before hubby relocates to Spain a few weeks later.

I am interested to know how far/how long it will take to walk over to the Poly? We plan on have breakfast over there one morning for that famous tonga toast I keep hearing about.

Thanks for the room number. Sounds nice.

I am curious about that walk to the POLY too.

I also heard there was also a golf cart that would take you to the end of the SOG driveway (basically across the street from the POLY). That would be very convenient!

Poly walk is about 10 minutes, 15 at the most. We walked it (and to TTC)several times in '98. We're going back Nov '05 and will be walking it sometimes.

Apparently the golf cart is available, but obviously can only carry a few people at a time. The bus to TTC runs something like every 15 minutes.

checked into Shades 12\3 - nothing but problems. Be prepared for indifferent staff, loooooong walks, and much more. Will post in detail when we get back home tomorrow. at Disney Quest now. sorry for the shortness, but just had to respond a little.

That's too bad. I would be interest in hearing the details when you get home.

Just got back from a week at SOG. We stayed in the old section, which was fine. We had a wonderful time, our room was always clean when we came back from the parks in the afternoon. The staff was friendly, no problems at all. We stayed in room 316 which was close to the magnolia pool and at night you could see the fireworks from the balcony of our room. Fantastic!! SOG is a great deluxe hotel at a very low price (compared to other deluxes), the decorations in the lobby were beautiful. I can't wait to go back!!

Any of the rooms on the fourth floor in that area would be fine. All have a great view of the golf course. The walk to the poly is about 10 minutes. We didn't see any of the golf carts while we were there. We started taking the bus after a few days. If you know the bus schedule it is very workable. Make sure you read the schedule, especially if you go downtown. It only runs every hour and switches stops after 6:45pm.

We just got back yesterday. We stayed the last 3 nights at SOG. The resort is very nice. We stayed in the new section just off the lobby. The rooms were very nice! We had no problems with our stay. The only thing I will say negative is about the meal we had at the Garden Gallery. It was not as good as I remember it. The price was right but the quality was not.
The bus ran on time and was very easy to find so we had no problems there. :sunny:

Thanks everyone. I am getting very excited about this trip.

I can't wait to find out what ticket prices SOG will be offering for 2005, I hope the discount is comperable to what they are offering now.

I also hope they are going to participate in teh evening part of the extra magic hours. On the theme parks board people have been posting that the CM web site says SOG is included, but I also heard that during the test program in May 2004, SOG guests only had access to the morning hours.

We are staying at SOG in April. I'm hoping they post the discounts (if any) soon so we know whether it is cheaper to buy them in advance the regular way, or wait to purchase at SOG when we get there. We are thrilled with the new ticket options because we were debating between a 6 and 7 day pass. Now it is $1 more, so a no brainer!!

Hi

We just returned from an 8 day stay at SOG. Overall, it was great and I would stay there again. Our room number was 392 in the old section. Very convenient to lobby, store, food, pool (one of them). Not close to the parking garage but we used the valet service.

My only annoyance would be the pipes- every time someone flushed, everyone could hear it! No big deal becuz then I knew when it was time to get up :cool1: !

Enjoy your stay- the hotel is beautiful! We walked to the Poly all the time- nice walk- about 10 minutes

The Express Cafe down by the busses has great breakfast sandwiches...

Why did you hate it?

I thought you might like to read my review of DH and my stay at SOG. We were there for one week in the middle of this past October . We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.

The hotel is beautiful. The grounds, water features, flowers and waterfalls are very lovely. The interior of the hotel is also beautiful and comfortable. The greens look beautiful and we saw a lot of wildlife from our balcony.

The rooms are large and the beds comfortable. There is a small (dorm room size) frig in room and a very small coffee pot. It makes about 2 cups of coffee. You are given exactly 1 pouch of regular coffee per day. If you want more, or need de-caf, you may purchase it in the store. We were given one bar of soap and one bottle of shampoo on our arrival. They did not ever leave any more in the 7 nights we were there. There is a nice size balcony with 2 chairs and a small table. The closet is small but it does have a wonderful large safe in it. The room size would be comfortable for a family of 5 using the day bed and two queens. There is a small table with two straight back chairs.

Where our problem came in was with some of the staff. Our arrival at the front desk was met with a much less then a welcome greeting. There was no greeting, no smiles and an attitude of doing us a favor by checking us in. There were two women at the front desk and it was made very appearent before the end of our stay that they need more help at the desk. That is probably the reason why there is never a smile or any customer service at the desk.

The hotel is designed with very long hallways that turn into other long hallways, that angle off into another long hallway. You really do a lot of walking. We were on the 4th floor in at the far end of the new wing.

There was always a line, no matter what time of day you went to the front desk. Which is frequent due to fact you must pick up any packages, disney or otherwise at the front desk. If anyone sends you a gift or flower arrangement you must in person go down to the front desk, stand in the long line and sign off on a clip board to receive the item. Also, they wanted the sponsor only to do this. Unaware of this rule I went to the front desk, saw the long line and went to bell services to ask if they could get my anniversary gift delivery. I was informed that they were sorry, but Bell services is not allowed to do this. You must stand in line and sign for the package. After standing for 25 minutes in line they informed me that my husband would have to come down to sign for our disney package. My husband is in a wheelchair and was in our room getting ready for bed. It was 10:30 PM.

The housekeeping really needs training and managment. Our room was never cleaned. They make the beds, and gave us clean towels, wipe the sink out, leave a package of coffee and pick up their mousekeepers envelope. Period. Our soap dish, toilet, & tub and coffee pot was never cleaned. I would dump out the old grounds and rise the pot out each evening after we came back. The room was never made up before 4:00 in afternoon. When I tried to talk to one of the maids in the hallway she told me she didn't speak english, but was going on break!

We seem to run into many people that did not speak english, both housekeeping and restraunt help.

All in all I think SOG could be a really wonderful hotel and a great benefit to the military both retired and active with some training and either new management or better trained management. Our military active, retired or disabled deserve better and I have writen a letter to the management. Which, I have not heard a reply from. Perhaps sometime in the future we will give it a second chance. But, I don't think it will be while both my DH and myself work full time.

I think we will be staying in disney resorts with discount codes on our next visit. Which actually can be less expensive than SOG. Pop was $49 per night, and moderates were $89 with discount codes.

If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to answer.

Side note- I have read other people state that the old wing had not been redone yet. It is still the old carpet and furniture.

Thanks very much for your honest assessment. Having been forwarned, I hope it will help me cope with the service. Meaning my expectations in that regard will be low. As far as housekeeping goes that sounds frustrating, although sometimes I prefer when they just to the basics and get out. I am kind of wierd about people being in my space if you know what I mean.

Hi, I was at SOG from 11/29-12/4, I has none of the problems that some have had. Our room was always cleaned early and if you needed more shampoo, soap, or extra coffee bags, you could always get extra. I guess it just depends on what room you're in, because I never heard any pipes. Yes, depending on what section your in you can have a long walk, but if you stay in one of the huge disney resorts you have a longer walk. The only problem that I had, which someone mentioned is the front desk. When we checked in they were not very friendly. But hopefully if enough people complain, or they just need more training(trying to be nice), they can be more friendlier or get someone who is! Is SOG perfect no, but none of the others are either. But it is a beautiful and wonderful resort which I personally love and will go back again!!

I did hear the pipes but I have heard pipes at other Deluxes as well. Housekeeping was okay. I have no idea what time they came as we were out by 9 and home by 9pm. The one night after MVMCP we came back and they didn't leave a sheet for the day bed. I called at 12:30am and within 15 minutes we had a sheet. Probably took that long just to walk to the room!! I registered the room in my name even though DH is the retired person. They never asked me so I didn't volunteer the info. All packages were then sent to me and I picked them up. No one questioned anything. The front desk lines were less than 5 minutes. Our last morning we did have to check out at the desk instead of using the TV, which was inconvenient but that stuff happens all the time at Deluxes as well. I do not like the value resorts or even moderates. I like inside hallways and restaurants, giftshops etc. The resort, while not as decorated as the Poly or GF, is better than the CR and WL...in my opinion. At $97.00 bucks a night, I will definitely stay there again!!

Sorry this has taken so long to post. We were at Shades 12/3 to 12/6 (Myself, my son 11, two 13 year old boys and my 70 year old parents). The hotel is beautiful, as are the grounds, and the rooms are huge compared to others at Disney, but those are the only positives I can come up with. We had nothing but problems with the staff from the time we checked in. I don't think the people working at the desk could have cracked a smile for a million bucks! We had been guaranteed rooms close to the elevators for medical reasons - my father is handicapped. At check in, we were given rooms as far away from the elevators as possible on the fourth floor. I immediately called the front desk and they moved my parents to a first floor room, but this move then snowballed into one problem after another. Saturday, after a looong day at MGM, I hurt my back leaving Fantasmic. By the time we got to the Shades bus stop, I could barely walk. We got back to the hotel, walked the "mile" back to our room, only to find our room keys weren't working. We looked around for a house phone so I could call the desk, but there weren't any. One of the boys went down to the front desk to tell them what was happening. 20 minutes later, when he still wasn't back, the other 2 boys went after him. Now, before I get totally flamed here, understand that I really could barely walk. It wasn't that I just didn't feel like going to the desk myself, I just didn't think I could get back to the room if I did. Anyway, another 15 minutes go by before the boys came back up. Seems that the staff at the front desk completely ignored them. Even they were using words like urgent, and emergency, and injured, no one would help them, taking adults in line behind them instead. Finally, one of the boys got really angry and just busted his way up to the desk and told the girl what was going on. She told them to go back to the room and she would send security up. When security finally let us in the room, we had been waiting to get in for an hour. We walk into the room only to find that it had never been cleaned. Nothing. No beds made, no towels picked up, nothing. I immediately called the front desk and honestly, I wasn't too nice. Asked to speak to the manager on duty. Was told he was away from his desk, and that she would have him call me right back. I hung up with her and called my parents to let them know we were back (they left MGM before Fantasmic). While I was talking to my mother, she asked if I got her message. There was no message on my phone. She said she had tried to call us to leave a message and the phone system told her that our room was unoccupied. She went down to the desk and told the clerk what had happened. The clerk told her she must have dialed wrong, looked something up in the computer, dialed a number on her phone and handed it to my mother to leave the message. But there was no message for us. So, half hour later, I call the desk again. Got a different clerk, who said the manager was still away from his desk and would have him call me. I finally got called back right before 11:00 p.m., 2 hours after my first call. I explained what had happened, in great detail, and was basically told that it was OUR fault!! Apparently, when they switched my parents room, instead of checking them out of their room and moving them (in the computer) they checked us out of our room! Makes sense - that's why our room keys didn't work and we had no maid service. Now, I understand that mistakes happen, but was infuriated when he said that if we hadn't switched my parents' room, none of this would have happened. He flat out denied that any of his front desk staff would have ignored the children. After 15 minutes, I finally told him to just send someone up with new room keys and some clean towels so we could go to sleep. More than a half hour later, a bell man showed up with both. The next day, after breakfast, my mother spotted the day manager. We told her the whole story and she admitted that the desk staff did, in fact, often ignore children, that they had had a previous meeting about it, and she would schedule another one. I told her I thought they should really install some house phones, for safety reasons. Alot of elderly retirees stay at Shades and if something happened outside a room, there was no way to get help. She agreed. I have to say, she seemed to take our concerns seriously, and offered us a free dinner that night to make up for our inconvenience. We accepted, reluctantly on my part, but my mother doesn't like to make waves. Dinner turned into another ordeal - if any of you were in the Garden Gallery restaurant that night, I was the one crying into my napkin!! Since this post is already so long, I won't even get into that. I'm sure that these incidents, taken individually, will probably sound petty, but it was really the snowball effect. We had such a great time at the parks, and at MVMCP, but it just seemed like every time we walked into the hotel, there was some kind of problem. I know that we will never stay there again. Sorry this was so long.

Lunchmom,
I think that a letter to the general manager is in order. We have been in contact with him and he is nothing but helpful. Not sure what he can do at this point, but he does need to be aware of it. If you would like his name and address I would be glad to PM it to you. I'm sorry that these things affected your trip, but glad you had a good time at the parks.
