If you're eligible to stay at Shades of Green and haven't tried it yet, be sure to consider it for your next trip! We just returned from a 7-night stay there--our first SoG visit--and had a fabulous time. We were really amazed by the beauty of the grounds, the relaxed "resort" atmosphere, the sparkling spotlessness of the whole place (one morning at 8a.m. we walked by the playground and a groundskeeper was meticulously picking every fallen leaf off of the play structure!), and the SIZE of the room! The service was excellent; from check-in to check-out every SoG staff member we dealt with was smiling and accommodating. We had a minor problem with the a/c unit in the room one day and maintenance was there to fix it within about 5 minutes of our call--very impressive.

Things that especially surprised us (for good or bad):
1. The *deluxe* feel of the resort--the decor was gorgeous. We loved
the beautiful lobby area with its comfy couches and big rocking chairs,
and the grounds (waterfalls, fountains, etc.) were extremely pleasant.

We didn't expect such a "rich" feeling from SoG.
2. The quiet--even when the big golf tournament rolled in the atmosphere
was still quiet and peaceful. We might have felt differently if we had
had a room along a major foot traffic hallway--we were in the new
section toward the rear, overlooking the golf course, and had so
little noise that we almost wished we had brought a noise machine to
drown out the silence,
but there were some thoroughfare-type hallways (especially in the old
section, on the way to the pool or lobby in particular) that would
probably have been uncomfortably noisy.
3. The price of sodas/snacks/etc.!! We were expecting a price break
on vending machine sodas and/or sodas in the AAFES but the prices
were almost Disney prices--$1.75 for a 20oz. bottle of Coke or water,
etc. The AAFES had a fairly good selection of snacks at okay prices
but still pretty $$$--next time we will do a grocery stop enroute!
4. The buses--we didn't use these as much as we thought we would.
We are a get-to-the-parks-before-rope-drop family most mornings
and even taking the first bus just didn't allow that--the bus (or bus +
monorail depending on the park) would get us to
the park right at opening or shortly after, not quite good enough for us!
:) We ended up using our rental car or walking to the Poly (very
pleasant walk BTW) and taking the monorail(s) depending on the park on
days when we wanted to be among the first inside the park at
rope drop.
5. The "Disney" feel--I was concerned that I would miss the "Disney" feel,
being accustomed to staying at Disney resorts, but I didn't feel
deprived at all! Just being so close to MK and the MK resorts, and the
"Disneylike" demeanor of the SoG staff, gave me plenty of the Disney
feeling.
All in all we were absolutely in love with SoG. We plan to stay there again on our next visit, hopefully before too long! Any questions, please ask and I will try to answer.

I'm so glad you had a wonderful time staying at SOG! We are also big fans for all the reasons you mentioned. Can't wait to get back!

Thank you so much for posting your report.
Now I am really looking forward to staying here. :)

SSsshhhhh! we love it too!!!! :teeth:

Just the type report I have been watching for (...and a good report at that!!) Just a quick question? Does SoG make it any easier for us "families of 5" while staying at WDW? We are taking a DCL cruise and are planning 2-3 days for parks before, as well as 2-3 more park days after...Do you know if SoG will require us to go for two rooms (kids will be 8, 5 and 3). Just thought I would check in case you knew about this or heard any other "rules" at SoG? Thanks for any info you may know about! :)

I am so happy to hear this! I just joined and we leave for Disney in 3 weeks - we are staying at SoG and my Dh was able to sponsor rooms for my parents and my sister's family as well. I can't wait!

I had the chance to stay at SOG over a year ago and enjoyed it as well. Their Garden Grill restaurant has one of the cheapest buffets on the WDW property ($14 adult, $7 child). The only minor drawback I encountered was the fairly long walk to my room. SOG spreads out quite a ways so you may want to ask for a specific location in the building if you have any health problems. Even so, I highly recommend SOG as a great place to stay if you are eligible.

NotTooGoofy, that's a good point about how spread out the resort is...I meant to say something about that. We were really surprised by how long a hike it was from our room to just about anywhere besides the parking garage. Anyone who is making a reservation might want to look at a map of SoG and see what they might prefer to be closer to (the pool vs. the parking garage, for example, since these are a HUGE distance from each other, or closer to the bus stop if you'll be riding the bus a lot).

We are headed to Shades of Green in February (if Southwest ever opens for February travel, that is) and we are getting really excited. DH and I sponsored 6 rooms total, and we are looking forward to the resort and the World as a whole.

We have a bunch of kids with us, and 3 of our rooms are 1st floor-poolside, so I think we will be contributing to the noise you were speaking of.

What I can't figure out, looking at the resort maps, is whether the newer wing, closer to the garage, is nearer to the Poly and/or the TTC or the other way around. Basically, I am looking for some context of where the different room areas are situated given the likelihood of walking over to the Poly to catch the monorail. (We are early morning people too, and I don't want to be hung up by the busses if I can prevent it.)

Thanks for your thoughts!

The newer wing is closer to the poly, All poolside rooms are in the old section.

We stayed 1st floor poolside (old section) and loved it, we were near the Magnolia pool.

I think the old section is back by the Mickey pool and Evergreens. The new section is up front in the same bldg as the lobby, Garden Grill, bx, Mangino's, and bus stop. We were on the 5th fl and all we had to do was take the elevator down for the bus or buffet. It was quite a hike for the pool and Evergreens. I don't know how close we were to the garage since we didn't drive. It was definately closer to Poly, the shady shuttle leaves from the lobby level of the bldg.

We love this place! We have stayed 3 times in the last year and are planning for October 2006. We haven't stayed in the old section and probably won't since I now request the new section(so far no problem getting it).

Thank you for this report! My DH and I are staying there for the first time in December with my Dsis and her kids (her DH is military, unfortunately not able to join us due to deployment) I have to admit I was a little nervous about staying here, I was not sure if it would be "disney" enough or what the overall feeling of the resort would be. Now I am happy we were able to get a reservation there, and for such a great price! (Gives me more money to spend in the parks, heh heh)

One question: how long does it take to walk to the Poly? The kids will be 4 and 6 (4 year old in a stroller). Do you think the walk over is OK for the 6 year old? He is a good walker, never complained once or asked for a stroller on his trip in March. On the other hand, I would not want to wear him out unnecessarily at the start of the day.

OH YA we LOOOOOOOVED it there.   We ate all of our meals there, except lunch counter service in the parks, and everything was beautiful and clean and quiet! We even LOVED the walk back and forth to the Polynesian!!!

I can't wait to go back next year!!!

We had our 3 yr old in a stroller, and on average it took us 6-7 mins. We do walk very fast. And at times, they see you crossing the street and head down to get you in a golf cart. We actually refused the ride, cause we enjoyed looking for the allegator in the ponds. We saw him several times too. :)
