Does anyone know why Shades of Green charges you to use their parking garage? My family is staying here for the first time in Dec. It is not a big deal we were just wondering about the charge.

I would have rather they kept the resort the way it was and kept costs down. I remember when yearly increases were $2. Now it is a whole lot more than that and they have even begun allowing guests who previously did not qualify (during certain months). I foresee the future of this hotel to be nothing different than any other hotel on property, with a cost that most people in the military cannot afford.

The same reason the Swan and Dolphin do. They aren't owned by Disney so they can charge for it. NOt to give Disney any ideas or anythign but they are one of the very few vacation spots that don't charge for parking at their resorts. Come to Atlanta and stay downtown. $25 per day and you have to pay to get your car in and out. So if you stay 2 nights and take your car out once, you'll be charged $75.

I hate the fact that they charge per day, but whatta ya gonna do about it?! Oh well, at least they could have made the parking garage feel a little roomier. Talk about tight parking spaces; sheesh. It's like trying to park an 18 wheeler in a subcompact parking space.:headache:

It might be related to them being operated by the Federal government. I know our employees always want us to build a parking garage, but when I tell them that they will have to pay to park there, they suddenly find the parking lots just perfect. I've been made to understand that if you build a parking garage with federal dollars, then you have to charge to park there.

If I remember correctly it was $5 a day that they charge. We were there is May for 7 nights and I think it was $35 for our parking fee.
HTH :)

Okay I should put my glasses on
- I thought you asked WHAT they charged not WHY- Sorry aobut that - I am getting too old to read without my glasses!

Anyone with a military I.D. can use the facilities @ SOG. If they didn't charge something for parking, anyone going to the parks would use SOG for free, park there all day and use the transportation but nothing else that generates revenue. Even though I wish parking was free, I can see why they charge and I'm sure even that little bit helps offset the cost of running the resort. I just wish they'd use the money to invest in some new buses as I thought they were a disgrace when we used them in August.

BTW, they also charge for parking at the Hale Koa in Hawaii.

Just one way to add revenue.

SOG isn't a profit-making venture. The fees and room rates they charge are only to break even. I don't have a problem with the increases over the past few years. They invested a lot of money in the remodeling and made a lovely resort even more beautiful. More military families have the opportunity to enjoy it, thanks to the expansion, but it also increases operating costs with more employees and maintenance. Opening it up to those who wouldn't normally be eligible to stay during the slowest months maintains the resort income consistently throughout the year and helps keep the prices down. Plus, it's a nice thing to do. Even when you add on $5 a day for parking, it's still a great bargain compared to other Disney deluxe resorts.

The bus service is contracted by SOG. It's up to the bus company to invest in better buses. They probably want to maximize their profits, so aren't in a hurry to upgrade the buses as long as they are still getting the contract with the ones they have now.

Hopefully SOG will take that into consideration when it's time to renegotiate the contract. Especially since there has been an increase of negative posts lately concerning transportation issues at the resort.

I believe you need a room key to access the garage. In 2006 when I stopped at SoG to pick up park tickets I was directed to golf course parking. This year I was given a temporary key at the guard shack to park at the garage for free while I went to purchase my park tickets.
