Sha'Carri Richardson Olympian

I think some people forget that legal in a state means very little, especially to an international group with pre-stated rules. It is still illegal federally. It is still a banned substance to the Olympic committee. A state doesn't determine the rules, so it doesn't matter that it was legal in her state. She broke a federal law. There will be no overturning this.

I also commend her for stepping up and taking responsibility for her actions. We see that so little from people. She sent the message that everyone makes mistakes, and sometimes there are consequences for those mistakes.

But the fact remains that alcohol & caffeine have those same affects and they don’t ban them. The length of time argument is a red herring, since there is nothing stopping somebody from showing up hung over the morning of their race. So my point remains - the hypocrisy of the rule is the problem.

The bolded is all that matters. You can talk about alcohol and caffeine all you want, if they are not banned then they are not banned. Everything else you are saying is a red herring.

As an athlete who trained for this moment, she had a choice. She chose to prioritize the drug and not the Olympics.

No, they do matter given their reason for banning marijuana. And my entire point, this entire conversation, has been the hypocrisy of it being a banned substance. I have never argued what she did.

But no, she didn’t prioritize drugs over the Olympics. She prioritized her mental & emotional health, which actually do matter more than the Olympics.

Great. Case closed, then?
Since she isn’t fighting the ruling, it’s actually been closed since it happened. But you know, this is a discussion board, so we do things like discuss.

It also opened the conversation to get the rule changed before the next Olympics.
