I broke two of my toes during our trip one year. It was the 2nd day of a 10 day trip. An ECV was not an option because my mom already had one and we wouldn't be able to fit 2 in the rental car. We asked at the Boardwalk where we were staying what our options were and found out they had loaner wheelchairs. This worked better than renting one in the parks because we could use it all the way back to the hotel. I will say the loaners were not in the best condition and they are first come first serve. I was lucky that my wonderful DH was nice to push me around for 8 days.
If you are able to rent an ECV, I would recommend it. The wheel chair was tough because the foot is out in the front and easily bumped into. That walking crutch you are just going to have your foot bumped into constantly causing additional pain. In an ECV you should be able to tuck the hurt foot in and avoid getting bumped too much.
