I'm having a friendly debate (really argument) with a friend about weight loss.

What is the most weight *you've* ever lost in a week? What did you do?

What is the most weight that is scientifically possible (barring loss of limbs or something like that) to lose in one week?

She has been on "the Lemonade Diet" ;) (drinking distilled water, with fresh lemons, cayenne pepper and organic maple syrup) for a few days (eating only organic veggies in addition to this "cocktail" and she swears she's already lost weight. She says people have lost 15-20 lbs in a week doing this.

Is that even humanly possible? I've never heard of anyone losing more than 10 lbs in a week (and even then, a lot of that is water weight so the next few weeks will show smaller losses as the body rehydrates.)

What do you guys think?

You can lose 15+ pounds in a week. It's not common, but it can be done.

The thing is, 90% is water weight. That's what you lose. We a friend go into the hospital with fluid retention and come out a week later and 28 lbs lighter. It was all fluid. I once forgot my diuretic on vacation for a week. When I got home I started taking it again as well as working out/eating less. A week later I was 15 pounds lighter, but again, most of that was water.

99.9% of people could not burn through 15 lbs of fat in a week.

1 lb of fat can provide roughly 3500 calories in energy. Most people don't burn that much in a day unless they're very large or very active.

To lose 15 pounds of fat in a week you'd have to burn through roughly 50,000 calories. To do that you'd either need to weigh 700 pounds and eat nothing for a whole week, or you'd need to be smaller and basically run at a break-neck pace for 24 hours a day. Not going to happen.

What she's likely doing is losing water weight. That beverage will flush out your system but eventfully it'll taper off. I've lost about 8 lbs. in a week but that was when I was crazy busy so I wasn't eating much at all.

I lost 12 pounds last week. Our lives have been turned upside down as of late because of a very difficult decision that I had to make at work. I've always heard of people worrying weight off.. I guess that is what I have done. Although I'm fat as a bear, so I won't miss this 12 pounds :rotfl:

I have a friend who has used this diet many times. She is 5'2" and refuses to be over 105 pounds. She believes that the drink helps remove "sludge" from the intestinal tract and that is where the weight loss comes from. She also firmly believes in those colonic flushes...ewwwww I told her if I was interested in doing that I would just sign up for a colonoscopy, that way I'd be clean the whole way through and I'd have a medical screening at the same time :teeth:

I think the most I ever lost in one week was 7 1/2 pounds. Of course, I was deathly ill with a strep throat.

It depnds on the weight of the person to start with and if it is the first week of their diet or they are weeks into it. At my weight loss class one man lost 21lb in a week, however he was extremily obese to start with and it was the 1st week of his diet so it was mostly water he lost.
The most I have lost in the 1st week of a diet is 9lb, after a week or two that changes to between 0.5lb and 2lb a week.

I've lost 10-20 pounds in a week twice in my life, and both times I was very, very ill.

She's will lose weight because she is basically starving herself. There's no way the body can sustain itself on that for any length of time. Once she returns to "normal" eating, she will gain the weight back, and probably more, because she is really screwing up her metabolism.

Fad diets are a really huge pet peeve of mine. I just don't understand how some people can be that stupid.

I lost 22 pounds in ONE day! 9 1/2 of that is still calling me Mom. :rotfl:

I agree with the others, she is loosing water weight. She is not loosing fat. A little of it will be fat because of the lack of calories she is taking in, but most is just fluid. Once she starts eating again she will gain the bulk of it back. Because it wasnt true weight loss.

She really needs to find a healthier way to do it, and change her life style. Eat healthy and balanced, get some exercise, etc.

Number of pounds lost in a week is not a true reflection of much. Think of it in terms of % of weight lost in a week. I could loose a whole lot more weight in a week than a lot of people but that's because I start at 270 pounds. Ten to twelve pounds in a week would be easy. Healthy weight loss is about 2 pounds a week. That number is based on the % of calories you need to cut to make the out bigger than the in. I have dieted over the years and come to one unescapable conclusion. There is no miricle cure for weight loss. Its a simple formula calories in vs calories out. More out than in, you loose weight, more in than out you gain weight. I have done Weight Watchers (lost 35 pounds) Atkins (lost 40 pounds) and others. They all work if you follow them. They are not all healthy (Atkins) and they are in no way miricles. Even most diet pills have a disclaimer on the bottle that says if you use them in conjunction with a healthy diet and proper exercise you will loose weight. Well guess what? With a healthy diet and proper exercise you can do without the pills.

At an lunch time Weight Watchers program I did a number of years ago we would come in every Thursday at lunch and do our weigh in. During the first week I established my routine of working out at lunch and getting a small salad after workouts. On Thursday I would work out, get weighed in and then treat myself to something good for lunch after the weigh in. The first week I lost 10 pounds and got a ribbon for it. Everyone else in the group was female and boy did I get some dirty looks that first week. All of the others would bring their lunch and eat during the meeting. They made a huge production about what they were eating and what new products they had found that were low calorie. These people actually gained weight during the 8 week program. They would bring buckets of salad and pour low calorie dressing on them and graze over them for an hour during the meeting. Yet they would come back the next week weighing more.

I learned the greatest way to loose weight is to have the right mind. Don't tell the world your on a diet, don't look like your dog just died as you eat you measly portions and try and make the world feel sorry for you. Just do it and enjoy the end results.

Wow sounds like its time for me to start my next diet. But I'll never tell you if I do.

Most I lost at one time was 13 lbs in less then two hours, but I had to give birth to do it....lol

I have lost up to 4.5 lbs in a week at WW and was severly tongue lashed for it too. It's not good on your body to lose more than one to two lbs a week. Granted people that are larger or more active can loose more but like the others have said, it's mostly water.

IMHO: Any diet that has you drink a majority of your meal, unless closely supervised by a doctor, should not be attempted. If you are NOT getting enough calories, fat and vitamins your body will attack it's self and go after the easiest thing to break down...muscle.

Yes it's possilbe to loose a ton of WATER weight but as soon as the person resumes a normal diet the 'weight' will come back on.

Your best bet, smaller portions, TONS of water, light meals several times a day instead of three huge meals and get some excerise.

Too funny!!! :lmao:

The most I lost in a week was 5 lbs. and that was my first week of WW. After that it was about a 1 lb. or less a week. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the responses so far! :)

I can't believe that it might be possible to lose 15 lbs in one week, even if a lot of it is water weight. I wonder what percentage of it could actually be fat? Maybe like 25%? :confused3 So if she loses ten, she'll gain back 7?

I know she's a little off the deep end with this diet. I had an eating disorder in high school and I know it's not good to ever have under 800 calories a day, even on the strictest of diets.

Basically, I count calories and follow the advice of my doctor to eat a lot of fish, protein, fruits, veggies, healthy fats like olive oil and nuts, etc. and to allow occasional treats. He believes (like I do) that metabolism is important and that calories in and calories out isn't the whole picture. He says that the body processes nutrients in different ways so 100 cals of protein, or 100 cals of fat or 100 cals of carbs or 100 cals of alcohol all have different chemical influence on the metabolism of the person. He also says that those with more muscle will have a higher metabolism. Like let's say a 150 lb. person that is 25% body fat eats 1500 calories a day and doing 1 hour of walking plus daily activities burns 2000. A second person with the same weight but that's 40% body fat eats the same, does the same exercise but will burn less because of their metabolism. Likewise someone who is 700 lbs who cuts out 3500 calories a week and someone who is 100 lbs who cuts out 3500 calories a week will NOT both lose a pound. There are a lot of variables.

I am hoping to lose a few more lbs. - like 28-33, I think.

The most I have lost in one week was 13 pounds and the was the first week of my diet. The first week is always a big loss, to bad it slows down after that!

I lost 35lbs in one week.. 8 was baby the rest was 12 bags of Ringers Lac. they had to force into me when my BP crashed after the epidural.11yrs later I lost about 20lbs. the first week after I found out I was getting divorced. Stress will make you loose weight faster then anything imo.

I've heard that yes, you can lose 10 and 15 pounds in a week, but it's usually water weight. They say the safest is when you're losing about 2 lbs/week. If you check out the weigh lose commercials (Jenny Craig, LA Wieght Loss, Weight Watchers), it usually comes up about that- Lose 20 pounds in 10 weeks! WOW!
