My co-worker said his family was still allowed into early entry even though he (the father) was the only one to have their hotel key. I thought everyone has to have their key?
Officially, everyone needs a key. Husband and I have been quite a few times at this point, and we are usually asked to show both of our cards. That said, there were a few times where we only showed one as the other dug around in pockets/bags to find theirs…
Why wouldn't the other family members have a key? Are you talking about non-immediate family members that aren't staying with them?
Either way, the rule is all people need to have a room key to show for early entry. One fix would be if the co-worker get those family memebers added to their room and get keys for them.

I am not OP but my guess is Dad has a work conference for similar and so got the room for free, but family is local or staying offsite because it is cheaper.
I will say, in my experience, they only did check my room key then waved my kids in after me at early entry. Not sure if that is always the case, but we were there at a busy time and my sense is they were trying to keep the line moving. Express pass for premier hotels is another story—they scanned each person’s room key every time.
Who knows? Everyone should gave to show and did when I’ve been but I’m sure some days it’s less enforced. I wouldn’t want to get busted trying to sneak in if that’s where this question stems from. Not really in trouble, just wasted time as you got there early and (rightfully) couldn’t get in.

Pretty simple, they just accidently left the other keys on the dresser and forgot to grab them on the way out. We have always been asked to show our cards and that is why I asked. I figured they just got lucky and the CM did not make them go back.

Ah. Makes sense. Ya I'd lean on that they just got lucky and weren't asked to show them. Every time I've done early entry with the family everyone in our group had to flash our cards.
That being said, I highly doubt the CMs look that closely at the cards (i.e. check that the dates on them were valid). I'd wager I could probably flash an old room key and they'd wave us through.
The one time I utilized early entry, they really didn't check at all. They saw that I was holding "a" card, but it really could have been anything. They didn't look close enough to see if it was really an onsite key card.
