SERIOUSLY - has our family the 'Magic" to ourselves on 6th August 2011 Med cruise???

Hi FloridaSam

You're first cruise - how exciting - thats just where we were this time last year and I found out such a lot of information reading these threads. Check out some of the threads at the top of the very first page - they cover anything and everything you need to know and where you can go to find out more info - trust me - I read for hours and made myself wee notes on my iphone of things I should buy and other websites to check out. The planning itself was soo much fun.

Who is travelling with you? With me its my three daughters and my mum. This will be everyones second Disney Cruise except mum - it'll be her first and she 73!!!

Hope to find out a little more about you all.

MrsMac

Hi

Looks like we've got most of the ship to ourselves! It'll be me, my hubby and the boys who are 16 and 14.

We're flying into Barcelona on the Friday and then staying on for a few extra days leave Barcelona on Wednesday the 17th! What about you?

Sam

Hi All,
I was wondering when we'd start a thread for the August 6th cruise! My hubby, me, and our 6 year old daughter are all set for this European adventure. We've cruised the Islands from Florida on Disney Magic but never cruised Europe. Really excited!

Has anyone been looking into port excursions? I've been trying to decide between the Disney ones and private excursions. Any thoughts?

Also, hope we can start an onboard exchange with Fish Extenders - it was so much fun on our last cruise.
best wishes to you all....

Hi FloridaMom3461

My twins are 6 year old girls - Sarah and Aileen - perhaps they will all play together in the Lab. They went to both the Club and the Lab last year, my eldest Rebecca, who was 10 when we cruised spent a lot time in the lab - she will be able to go to Ocean Quest this year. The twins were 5 last year - they made a pile of cool stuff in the Lab - they love the Hannah Montana pillow cases they coloured in - can hardly get them off the bed to get them washed!!

As for Fish Extenders - most definitely keen to take part again. Bought my FE from Gradysmom, I think that was the sellers name, and am keen to use it again! Hopefully some others will join us - they girls loved getting surprises in theirs every day.

I've not thought much yet about exucursions yet. Last year did a mixture of Disney ones e.g. Gibraltar, and some on our own - Vigo, Lisbon and Cadiz. I have done Villefranche before with my husband - we chose Monaco over Nice. Not sure about this year. To be honest my kids preferred to stay on the ship and go to the Lab/theatre. Also my mum really isn't overly keen on too much heat so I think I might often leave the Magic on my own and let them party on board!!! When I have looked into the excursions more I will perhaps be able to make more comments. A friend I cruised with last year is cruising again they summer a couple of weeks after us. Lisa will have done her homework and researched the excursions so I might be able to share more when I have found out more from her!

Get back to me about the Fish Extenders exchange and I will try and compile a list of names and cabin numbers for those who wish to take part, if you are happy with that?

Chat soon

Hi Sam

You can see from my signature I'm travelling with my three girls, all younger than your boys. Rebecca will be able to go to Ocean Quest this year but I think, although not sure of exact age ranges, your boys will both be able to go the The Stack I think it's called - its a teenage zone in the funnel - seems pretty cool - Rebecca would love it.

Have you heard of Fish Extenders?

If you check out some of the frequent threads accessible from the main threads page you should be able to find out about them - we took part last year - basically exchanged small gifts between cabins - my kids loved it - not sure if would appeal to your boys. There were some 16 and 17 year olds last year - our gifts to them were leather bracelets, chewing gum and Northern Ireland playing cards - I have no experience buying for boys so not sure how well that went down!!

Do a search for FE Exchange and see what you think

Hey there everyone

Heres a photo of our FE (I'm sure many of you will already have them but I can recommend the lady who made ours - shes on Ebay). Also theres a photo of the girls in front of our decorated door - they loved all the Disney Designs on the stateroom door!!

Hi Jude (and everyone else)
What is the FE exchange? I guess you can tell, we've never participated in it before. But I'm definitely open to ideas and would love to get help in planning this trip.

My daughter knows now although originally I didn't tell her until we'd officially booked it. She would have been too excited! She's never been to Europe before, but her older cousins have and she's eager to go...

Hi Roberta

I will probably not do the best job of explaining the FE exchange but I will try!! I read about it on the Dis boards last year before we cruised and the girls really enjoyed taking part. Here goes, basically cruisers sign up to a a group and details of their stateroom numbers and the members of their family are exchanged (one person keeps all the info and ensures everything is shared as appropriate).
The idea then is to exchange small gifts with the other staterooms - you can buy a small gift per person or perhaps one per stateroom e.g. the girls received things like Disney puzzle books and crayons, American Candy (and as we are British is was nice to receive some American goodies), Pirate gear for Pirate night, a Mickey Head money box, a Mickey head bead key ring with their initial on it, stickers - you get the idea, small fun gifts, some particularly relevant to the countries the other families came from. I got things like a shopper, scottish fudge, mini bottle of wine, keyring, chocolates, mini scrapbook ready to fill with small photos, post its, magnet etc. I gave out some Irish things, some goodies made as keepsakes from the cruise, Cadburys Smarties etc - don't want to say too much in case I do some of the same things for this year.

It was great fun to come back to the stateroom and find the pockets of our Fish Extender - shown in my previous post - filled with goodies. I put in a card with the gifts I delivered so people would who it was from. Some of the ones I received were anonymous, others had notes - thats up to the sender.

It would be nice to take part again - its particularly fun to get things from other countries and I enjoyed picking up things specific to the UK and Ireland to give as presents.

Do a search for FE Exchange or Fish Extenders and I am sure you will be able to find out a whole lot more and make up your mind whether you wish to participate. Last year there were 11 staterooms in our group I think. That number was manageable - after all you have to pack all the stuff you are giving out and bring it in your luggage - and of course take home all the goodies you receive - if you were doing an exchange between a large number of staterooms it might make luggage an issue.

I'll keep a check on the thread and see who else is interested - you can let me know your thoughts in due course.

What age is your daughter? Mine are 11 and then 6 year old twins. They do not know yet - I'm holding off for a while before I tell them!!

Night for now

Jude

MrsMac (Jude),
Excellent explanation of the fish extenders! The fish extender gift exchange was definitely a high point of our last cruise on the Magic! Since we're coming from the USA, I'll keep in mind your suggestion about bringing things from here. We are definitely in and please do let me know if I can assist in organizing the exchange info etc.

You're daughters are adorable. I showed my daughter, Leigha, and told her they could play on the cruise: she was a bit confused though about how she'd know them to play :)

We had planned this cruise last year and had to cancel so we are multiply excited for this year. Plane tickets purchased, hotel in Barcelona booked....final payment for cruise next week. Yay.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

MrsMac (Jude) & the rest of our fellow Aug 6th magic cruisers,

Ever since we booked our trip to the Med this summer, I have been checking the boards hoping that an Aug 6th thread would start up. And my ten year old has been hoping that a FE list would begin!

We (Me, Husband, B-10 & B-2) are flying in from Newfoundland and spending a week with family in England before setting sail from Barcelona. My parents are joining us from Montreal and we are really looking forward to our vacation. My mum is especially looking forward to having her Birthday in Monaco!:bday:

If you are starting a list MrsMac for FE -- please add us to your list. We have never done it before but it looks like a lot of fun from all the posts I have seen on the boards.

I am very interested to see what people are deciding to do about excursions through Disney or private. I have read so many posts and reviews, I think I am more confused than when I started...lol. We are thinking of taking the Disney excursions on the busy days (to take away the stress of missing the boat) and doing our own thing on the more relaxed days.

The count down is on! pirate:

Randi I have started an FE list - happy days!! I'm all excited now! There is yourselves, Newfoundland Sailor and us - MrsMac. I will share more of the details as I get them - not much to share at the minute but hopefully there will be a nice wee group by the time we sail. I'll be happy to ask for help with organising when I need it if thats ok? Thanks

Hi Heather - welcome to you and your family on your first Disney Cruise. Delighted to have you participating in our FE exchange. I will note names, ages, and in due course, stateroom numbers.

Its all very exciting isnt it?!!

Hi everybody,

We are also booked on this cruise. It will be me, husband, 17 DS, 15 DS, 11 DD, and 5 DS. We were originally booked on the 7/30 cruise but when they switched it to 7 nights we changed to the 8/6 cruise. It will be our first Med cruise. It will be my 5th cruise, husbands 4th cruise, and the kids 2nd cruise. We are very excited. Need to book our excursions, it is so hard to decide. I just got off the Feb. 20 cruise on the Dream, had a great time, looking forward to being back on the Magic.

Welcome Wendy and glad you'll be joining us all. The excursions are definitely difficult to choose. I've been reading reviews on line but cannot decide between just Disney excursions and some highly rated (online) private ones. I'd love to hear your thoughts as you explore the options.

I looked into adding Adventures By Disney today for the pre-cruise package and found out I cannot book it. The hotel they are using only allow 2 people in a room and there is 6 of us, so we would need 3 rooms which isn't a problem except Disney told me we have to have 1 adult in each room and my 17 year old doesn't count. I guess they rule out larger families. Bummer

Hi Everyone!

We booked this cruise a couple of weeks ago, and I am so excited! It is me (Caroline, 21 at time of cruise), my brother and my Mum going. It is our first cruise, and I am so excited! :) We haven't decided on shore excursions yet, although we are thinking of doing a mixture of Disney ones and some by ourselves. Also going to spend a couple of nights in Barcelona around the cruise, but haven't booked our flights yet. :)

Welcome! We're just down the road from you in Bournemouth!!!

We're going the day before to Barcelona from Heathrow and then staying in Barcelona until the Wednesday after the cruise ends.

Hi!

We haven't booked flights yet but have been looking at Ryanair from Bournemouth, as my Mum likes flying from there as it's so convenient (although they don't go to the central Barcelona airport). Hoping they have a sale soon as the flights aren't too cheap!

:)

Hi Jude (and everyone!)
My daughter turns 12 next month -- so pretty much the same age as yours. And it looks like Wendy also has a daughter about the same age! So exciting for them...

Wondering ... has anyone been to Herculaneum? My husband and I went to Pompeii in 1997 and I'm wondering if the (smaller) Herculaneum is a worthwhile tour to do instead with kids?

We found a lot of the hotels in Barcelona only allow 2 per room. We've got the same problem divided in half as there's 3 of us. I actually ended up booking a small suite for the night before the cruise departure that allowed 3 people and that was less expensive than 2 rooms.

Hey Rob

Sounds like our daughters will be having some fun getting to know each other. Last summer Rebecca went to the Lab a lot. This year she will be old enough for The Edge - called Ocean Quest last year. I'm not sure how keen she will be the girls day as she won't know anyone so it will be good for her to perhaps meet your daughter and Wendys. She loves all things American (takes after me I have to admit!!) so she will be delighted to make some real American friends (and English of course too!!).

Has anyone started to count the number of weeks til we cruise yet?

I want to start thinking about what gifts to get for our FE Exchange - Anyone else interested in adding their stateroom to the list?

Happy planning one and all

Jude

I'm in! Just booked this cruise for my family to celebrate my husband's homecoming from deployment. It will be me, my husband, my 15 yr old daughter and my 4 year old daughter who thinks she's the little mermaid. My oldest is really looking forward to meeting other teens to hang out with, and if she meets an English person and gets to listen to them talk she just might die of happiness. We're American, but live in Germany right now. We've never cruised Disney before, but have talked about it forever. DH and I have cruised twice before, and the kids once before. Getting so excited, I can't wait!!!

Nice to "meet" you all,
Sonja
