September Trip-Insurance

Hello,

We are planning a trip for the first week of September. I am aware that this is hurricane season for Florida. Few questions for anyone that is in the know:

-Do I need to sign up for the insurance as soon as I book? If not, when is the latest that I can make that decision?

-It looks like $150 would be what I would owe for the insurance which seems pretty fair to me. Would I receive the total amount back if we were to lose out trip?

-Any restrictions that I should know about?

Thanks for any help!

The Disney trip insurance is $75.95 per adult, so $151.90 for two adults in the room, children under age 18 are covered for free. Latest to add it is your final payment date. The premium is not refundable if you cancel the trip, would be subtracted from your deposit refund if you cancel before the 45 day point.

Most people add it with their final payment since it's nonrefundable, BUT it also covers your flights purchased separately OR through Disney. Once you purchase nonrefundable flights is also a good time to add the insurance, even before your final payment date. Would cover those flights if you cancelled for a covered reason.

I've gone numerous times in September and never had even a close brush with a hurricane. If one does happen to defy the astronomical odds and hit while you are there, it would cost you no more than one day.

agreed - we've also been many times in September and never even worried about a hurricane.

I'm of the opinion that insurance is not for what is likely but to cover what would be a financial hardship. I'm LIKELY to get a hangnail, but I have insurance in case I need an appendectomy, which is unlikely but extremely expensive. . . Trip insurance isn't likely to pay out (that's why the insurance companies offer it at the price they do - infrequent payouts!) But it is hurricane season, trip insurance also covers illnesses and injuries, and it would be a financial hardship for me if I had to cancel my trip and lose all money paid. The $150 is worth it to me.

Keep in mind travel insurance doesn't cover "tropical storms". We had a wet and windy trip that was not covered because the storm was not upgraded to a "hurricane" until after we left.

We get trip insurance, not for hurricanes, but for everything else. If someone is sick and we need to stay longer, no worries. Something happens at home and we need to cut a trip short, no worries.

What is exactly covered depends on the policy, so review it carefully and ask questions.
