September 2, 2012 - Magic - NYC to Canada

Hi everyone! I'm Nicole(30) and live within walking distance to the port in Manhattan. :cool1:

This will be my first cruise with my veteran parents (grumpy-gramps is my father, also on the boards). We'll be traveling with my little sister and my niece, my older brother, his Canadian wife (from Halifax!) and their baby who is due at the end of May.

I can't wait to meet everyone. Let me know if you need any NYC info/advice/recommendations!

Welcome aboard!!!Welcome to the disboards as well!! :thumbsup2
I'm sure we will hit you up for some NYC info as we get closer.

I am!! Still haven't found a hotel yet! Getting nervous now. However, we are getting on the Fantasy in about 2 weeks so I'm having trouble focusing on much else right now!!

Is anyone staying in the city before or after the cruise? And if so, where? The cheapest we are finding is still well over $300 bucks a night. We've been to NYC a few times and have always been able to find a deal on Hotwire but nothing reasonable has come up for months now.

We just changed our category to a 5A midship. We live in Central NJ and will take a NJ Transit train to Penn station, and a taxi to the port. I'm excited since this will be cruise #10 on DCL.
Michele

I am - can't wait for it to finally happen!

Meanwhile, though, I am still battling a mean cold and fever :headache:. Hoping to feel better soon, and for summer to finally arrive. So, back off to bed for me ...

Here's hopping you feel better soon!!!! :goodvibes

What hotel are you guys staying at? We're flying in the day before the cruise (9/1), and I have no idea where to stay...

Do we stay near the airport (LGA), and if so, how easy is it to go into the city for a while if we want to? How expensive would transportation to the Times Square area be to/from the airport area, and what transportation is best?

If we stay in the TS area instead, how do we get to our hotel from LGA? Are there hotels that do shuttles? Or is there a shuttle service we can use to avoid expensive cab fares?

How do we get to the port in the morning of 9/2? I think that the Disney transfers are too expensive and there's probably a better way to do it on our own, but I don't know what's best...I also don't want to be hauling luggage on a subway or other public transport either.

I'm so confused!! :rotfl2:

You can stay near the airport if you want, but that won't be very fun. It may save some money, but there are better options. And regardless of whether or not you stay out there, you should spring for the cab ride. There are some shuttle services to different landmarks in the city, like Grand Central Station, Penn Station, Port Authority, etc. that run about $15 per person, or so, and a cab ride will be maybe $40/50 and will make you feel more comfortable, and provide the direct services the shuttles do not.

If you want a hotel closer to the ship, I know there's a place called the Skyline Hotel that's on the west side and as of now it looks like they still have rooms. (skylinehotelny dot com) It's not the most glamorous, but it seems cheaper than the places closer to Times Square, and depending on your luggage, you could walk to the ship. Or it would just be a tiny cab fare because it's so close. Either way, stick to cabs and you'll be happy you did.

Other options for hotels, I'd say, is anything on the Upper West Side. I just did a quick search and Expedia has some really good rates. Do a Google search for "Hotels UWS NYC."

Don't be afraid of the Upper West Side. Or even a little higher up. The area is generally great (even high up) and you'll be also a quick cab ride to the ship and save on lodging.

It seems like most hotels closer to Times Square are booked at that time anyway since it is Labor Day weekend. Book soon!

I think the Skyline Hotel, or anything Upper West Side might be ideal for what you're looking for, though.

Hi everyone. I posted about a year ago when we made our reservation but haven't really kept up on the discussion...shame on me. My husband Chris (30) and I (29) will be joining you along with his Dad and his girlfriend. We are all from West Virginia and can't wait to get on board. Anyone doing FE's?

Reposting a really old post… hoping we can garner some additional folks:

Howdy folks, I am willing to coordinate a fish extender (FE) list for this cruise (I am pretty sure one has not started for this cruise as of yet).

For those that don't know, all Disney ships have an ornamental fish outside the room. The fish is used if someone needs to leave a note for someone in the room. What folks do is buy or make a holder with pockets that they will hang from the fish - we call this the fish extender. Folks participating in this FE will know the rooms of all the other participants (from what is posted here) and they will buy or make a small gift to leave in each FE sometime during the cruise. So it’s sort of like a Secret Santa thing. Some get a gift for the room, others personalize stuff for each person in the room or tailor it to the ages of the folks in the room. My experience on FEs have always been great. Folks often make or purchase a Disney inspired gift or will share something about where they are from or where the cruise is going. It’s always a treat to see stuff in your FE when you come to your room. It’s another way of DIS folks interacting and making the cruise special. So I will start the list:

Latest FE list (please let me know if I have any of the information wrong):
SILMARG - DH/DW/DD13/DD10 - 6120
DISNEYHOLIC - DH/DW - ????
KMAB00 - DH/DW - 6646

We love doing the FEs. This time it will just be my hubby and me, but we'd love to be added. I will get the stateroom # for you to add to the list!

I feel like I'm talking to myself in this thread! :-)

Just wondering:

How many of you are going with just a birth certificate and drivers license vs. a passport/passport card? I have the card, but my husband just has the DL/BC. Thinking about upgrading us both to the book (because I know it's safer to have it), but wondering if we're the only ones who, so far, don't have the passport books. As many cruises as I've done, you'd think I'd have gotten one by now, but I haven't! :goodvibes

Both hubby and I have passport books. I can't keep up with all the changes, so we got passports ages ago and have used them exclusively. In fact, hubby just renewed his, and it took less than a month.

I know what you mean, no one even acknowledged my last post. ;)

Gus and I both have passport books. We were on the WBTA a few years ago so we had to have them for Europe. I think it's safer to have them since a few of our friends have been hassled with the whole BC/ID thing on a different cruise.

We are actually on a plane right now flying to MCO to get on the Fantasy tomorrow! Can't wait!! :mickeyjum

We had "jumped ship" so to speak, on this sailing awhile ago - now we are fiddling with the idea of booking it again - lol. I really really want to - so I may hang around here a bit :)

I have "real" passports.

I agree this is my 5th DCL... and this is by far the quietest thread. Which leads me to think that this cruise is going to either be empty... or heavily discounted after final payment is due.

I wish this cruise would get a slight discount - heck I will be happy with a KSF !!

I don't care if it gets discounted, but I would really like an upgrade! :lmao:

We picked a sideways room, so I'm happy with it either way, but a verandah would sure be nice!
