I use the dollar bills for tipping room service because then I can make sure that the person gets the tip.
I also think of the tip holistically and my tipping starts at the airport here in Chicago. I always do curbside check in whenever possible, because I think they are a little more lenient regarding weight and size (flying SW) than they are in the concourse.
There is also other tipping along the way cabs, bellmen, etc. So, it seems like I always need singles.
Thought I would never get caught up with the thread, but I ake it to the other side!! Too many trips and days away from the computer.
When "gold" dollar coins were first introduced we started to tip cash for bellmen, etc. using them and adding a delicious Hershey's Golden Almond candy bar for special people. Room steward, room service and Mousekeeping at the resorts always seem to remember and give us great service. They are easy to carry and my wallet isn't bursting at the seams from the bills.
