Sept 25, 2011 Wonder - Mexican Riviera

I don’t want to bring up negative energy BUT I’ve been thinking anyone else kinda or somewhat worried about all the problems in Mexico as were on the cruise. Personally for us, we don’t think we’ll get off the ship (if so staying close by port) We think we’ll be staying back & enjoying some empty areas since people will venture out. We have been to Mexico before & the reason we booked the cruise wasn’t for its location it was because it was Disney & its 1st time on West Coast.

Just curious of everyone else thoughts…

I just typed this whole long crazy post and then hit enter to move to the next line as soon as a Windows Update popped up and then my computer restarted. Grrr. Here is the 30 second version:

Had to leave work early b/c son hurt himself at school. Chipped tooth... nothing too serious. Super happy. Super stressed I left work incomplete and owe some favors to co-workers (happy to repay but don't like leaving messes for others to clean up).

Needless to say between Jennifer in MI's DS (broken finger) and my DS (tooth accident)... I am happy to announce that our cruise has met it's illness/medical problems quota and the rest of you are free to travel safely.

Now I need to do a 1,000 things as we leave at 9am and I still am not packed. Yes... I am back on the couch overwhelmed staring in horror at the chaos in my living room. (While haven't packed... I do have a lot of fabulous piles of things to bring.) I am not feeling "excited," though I am happy to go, I know I'll wake up ridiculously early tomorrow ready to scream with excitement though. Alright... I'm booting myself off. See you all next week!

We feel the same. Have been to Mexico many times but first time with DD. So we think we are just going to maybe walk around the city so she gets a bit of the culture and maybe do a shore taxi around a bit. DD wants to do the swimming with the dolphins but we feel the she has many opportunities here to do so that we just rather limit our risks. So we will be onboard and enjoy what Disney has to offer after all thats why we are going on Disney.

We were worried about the "illness" thing over here and holding our breath. So sorry to hear about your son we went through the chipped tooth saga a while ago. I hope your son will be fine. But we are glad that Sept. 25 2011 quota has been meet. So on with the fun...oh wait I have to pack too and face those piles....oh darn.
It will all be worth it the memories we will all have.

One port (Cabo or PV... not sure off hand) has the Dolphin Encounter AT the port (or super close). You just walk from the ship to the dolphins. That seems much less risky than walking around the city. Thought I would mention it in case you didn't know about the location and you were interested in doing it.

Well, one needs to take care of one's own needs but, at as a US citizen who spent 27 years in Los Angeles and then moved to central Mexico for retirement, there is absolutely NO excursion I would not do in either Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas/San Jose Del Cabo. Yes, I even walk the city streets at night! Am I just as cautious as I would be in Los Angeles? ABSOLUTELY, but that's just common sense.

We are coming down from Vancouver on the previous cruise and definitely getting off in Ensenada for the tequila tasting tour. We will be doing a beach day on our own in PV (LOVE Playa los Muertos) as well as cavorting about Cabo both days.

It's not as scary as some make it seem.

We are doing Las Caletas in PV and Cabo Pool Getaway on the first (long) Cabo Day. I remember someone was doing Las Caletas with us... but is anyone doing the Pool Getaway?

Still going back and forth about what to do on the Cabo short day (though there will be gelato!!!!). I really wanted to do The Office but since they are closed... does anyone have any recommendations based on food quality/taste?

I've never had the gelato at Senor Sweets, but we did have breakfast there last February. Tasty stuff!

Hadn't heard that The Office was closed; it's always a favorite with cruise passengers. This past February and May we spent quite a bit of time at the Cocina y Cantina at The Hacienda. We only did dinners there but they were quite good. I actually thought the pricing for dinner was quite good; much less than I expected. If you like micheladas, the Michelada Cubano was FANTASTIC! You might want to check out http://www.haciendacocina.com/ for menus etc.

Down the stretch of Medano beach you'll also find Pueblo Bonita and Pueblo Bonita Rose, sister properties. Both properties had restaurants and bars that are readily accessible. Next to the Rose is Club Cascadas de Baja. We actually own a couple of timeshares here and LOVE this property. There is a beachfront restaurant that makes a very nice margarita. Most of the day is 2 x 1 so for $7 you can get a schooner of a margarita.

Next to Cascadas is Tabasco, which has a LOT of water sports stuff as well as their grill and bar. Between Cascadas and Tabasco, just a couple days a week, there is a guy who brings in tamales for sale. People line up for them! 15 pesos (I think that was the price) for a chicken, beef, or cheese tamale. VERY tasty.

The one thing you will have to do when you leave the port area is run the gauntlet of those selling their wares. That is one thing I don't like about Cabo.

Thank you for posting some excellent restaurant suggestions. I will have to do some research (I am quite serious about my Mexican food ) Cocina y Cantina's menu looks delicious I haven't googled the rest. Off to pack... then look at food while I procrastinate... then pack again. Leaving in 13 hours... planning on sleeping somewhere in there!

I've been to Mx plenty of times in the past, Tijuana (not a fan), Rosarito, Ensenada, Mazatlan, etc. I am not really scared of the violence because we will be in port during the day with lots of people around.

Hi all!

We were on the last Alaskan cruise ending Sept 6 and had a WONDERful time! We met some awesome crew memebrs who you will just love. I'd like to send a couple a little something in thanks for all they did, but not sure how to send to a port especially when they head to LA. Just wondering if anyone who might be on this cruise might be willing to take a little something for us and leave at guest services for those crew members?
