Ok, I need to start thinking about what to pack.
So............dinner at the restaurants, cruise casual? What exactly does that mean. My typical "mum uniform" at home is 3/4 jeans and a pretty top, will that be OK, Or should I pack dresses? And DH, can he wear shorts and a polo shirt? Or do I need button up shirts for him? I'm planning on pretty dresses for the girls?
Do you think DH could get away with one of those classy tux T-shirts for formal night.........Joking!!!! :rotfl: The suit is bad enough to pack, then there's his enormous shoes!!! OK, so not enormous, but they take up so much space!!!
I've read it gets chilly inside as the air-conditioning is cold. Keeping in mind I come from Australia, where the climate is similar to Florida, do I need a cardigan or wrap for dinner and the theatres?
Any packing tips for a first time cruiser?
Aaargghh, 14 days, I WILL BE WASHING! :sad2::sad2::sad2:

For us, the boys want to dress, so we will do the tux package for both. for dinners we go with what DCL is currently requesting (according to letters that people have received) no jeans or shorts at dinner. So, that meant khakis for the guys. (Khakis generally weigh less than jeans too...) As they were only worn at dinner, it was 1 or 2 pairs and that was that. Stephen wore either polo shirts or button downs for dinner. Palo is strick about the no shorts policy! If you show uo in shorts, you will be asked to go and change.

For the girls, at dinner Becca likes to wear dresses, so it is lightweight party and sun dresses for her, paired with flips or sandles. For me it is a variety of lightweight dresses and capris.

The kids (all 4 of us) will live in shorts or bathing suites, but will need a coverup to go to lunch if not out on deck. We generally did lunch by the pool, as it was easy and no one needed to change. I did miss having lunch at Lumieres this last trip though.

I plan on doing wash a couple of times as I know I can't pack enough. the washers and drier work on your key to the world card, and you can get detergent onboard as well. (I bring detergent - but I deal with exzema and allergies... (Hint hint, you might get a laundry gift if you are a kiwi or pineapple!) The largest issue I see/find with doing wash is finding a time where the machines are not full and have a line as well... Last year I washed early AM (like starting before 7) when we were in Grand Caymen. This worked well for us - I was ble to get 2 washers and just be done with it. There are laundry facilities on 3 floors if I remember right. I have only used the ones on 6, but I think thre are machines on 7 and 2 (?) as well.

Oh - as for temps, we didn't seem to mind the cool air in the theater/shows but we were always rushing in so we were warm... The dining room was fine to us. I would bring a wrap of sorts though as I could just be odd...:confused3:rotfl2:

About a taxi in Barcelona look at www.taxi2airport.nl then you can choose english. The price i found was much cheaper, and you can call then and if you want i can call them in The Netherlands.

I looked again and they have also a number in England

I tried to use the web site but they don't have our hotel listed and it wouldn't let me submit the address. Would you mind finding out about a taxi from the airport to the U232 hotel, Comte d’Urgell, 232 - 08036 - Barcelona? Thanks very much!

sounds like a great day.what kind of fish or is that a silly q?

Not a silly question at all! He (she??) was a cuttthroat trout. Pretty little thing.

Agree with this. Dennis wears khakis and polo to dinner casual, I bring a few light dresses which I find are easier for me than trying to match tops and pants. Takes about a minute for me to slip a dress over my head and I'm ready. We have not found a sweater or wrap necessary for the diningrooms or shows, but if you tend to get cold you might. I too will do laundry either early morning, late night or on a port day. Sometimes you just have to get in line and wait. You can visit with others there waiting and make a party of it! :woohoo:

Capris or shorts for me during the day. T-shirts and khakis pants for Dennis. We are not hang out in our bathing suits people----lucky for all of you!!! :rotfl2::lmao::sad2::scared1:

Us, too. For cruise casual, I'm in khakis and a polo; DW wears capris or slacks with a top or a light sun dress. However, she usually carries a wrap with her everywhere on board because she gets a chill in the dining rooms, theaters, bars, etc. (We've always lived in warm climates, so I guess our blood has thinned out! ;) )

OK what letter is this? I thought that jeans were fine for dinner as long as they weren't ripped? Well I can tell you now both me and Dan will be wearing jeans to dinner on Cruise casual nights! Dan will not wear Khaki's and I have no trousers only skirts and don't want to have to wear a skirt every night!

Anyone on this cruise recieved this letter? I haven't read about this anywhere??

You will see a lot of me on deck 9 wrapped up in a blanket with a drink from either Cafe Cove or the bar across from Topsiders if we have rough seas. :goodvibes

me too I think!:thumbsup2

LOL - glad to know I am not alone... Oh - you are in the Pmoegranate group, you are not a coconut... :rotfl2:

A fellow pommy!:thumbsup2

I always take a wrap or cardie for the fierce a/c, even though I definitely don't come from hot climes! ;) Some times I need it and other times I don't, but I'd always take one :)

You will be fine in jeans on cruise casual nights. :thumbsup2 Dennis wears khakis because they are lighter to pack and more comfortable when the many meals aboard start settling around the waist! Same with the sundresses for me, lighter, easier and fit growing waists! :rotfl2:

It was on the main board. I didnt receive it - just going by what was said there. I know they are also trying to step up the dress on the Wonder, so...

Was your VISA card issued in Europe?

At FNAC and El Corte Ingles on Placa Catalunya, both places asked for a passport to pay with VISA.

Folks, that was just MY experience. YMMV. Hopefully no one else will have any difficulty in Barcelona.

Woody

Lynne we have Chip & Pin cards mind unlike the US ones that don't have such security measures - not that this stops it completely but does reduce the issue!

Yes, it was , by mbna !! And when I think about it, I am sure when we are in usa we showed our driving licence when we used our cc sometimes.
Thats right Sarah, I forgot about that, its kinda funny as usually we get everything from america, but in this case we have somthing first.

Well back to work after 3 days off. Had the grandchildren on and off this weekend. Very emotional weekend, but we are going to get through this. I want to know if I knock my son in the head is it considered assault or discipline when he is 31?:confused3 Well guess that is not an option. On to plan B.

Whew, not that is off my chest. Back to cruise planning.

As for pick pockets in Barcelona. We experienced it on the 2007 repo. One of the woman traveling with us had a back pack purse on. We were in the Gothic section of Barcelona on a tour. Two woman got inbetween her and I for only a few seconds. Next thing I know her bag is unzipped. I let her know and when she checked it they had stolen a ziploc baggie she had with a flattened roll of toilet paper.:lmao: We cracked up and wish we could have seen their faces when they took a look at their "loot." One other cruise had a problem on the subway, but she made such a fuss the pick pocketer dropped her wallet and ran. Both of these woman did not have their belongings secured on their person. We carried a pouch around our neck and stick it inside our shirts. It holds, money, credit cards and passport.

As for the Visa and ATM, you have to make sure your pin does not start with a zero.

We aren't water folk, or beach folk really. We haven't been in or sat around the pools on the ships, or been in the hot tubs.

We sort of fit into this classification. I enjoy the water but we just can't sit and relax at a beach. We never visit the pools when we are away.

We saw Michael Crawford in the Phantom of the Opera in Los Angeles in 1989. I think his performance was one of the highlights of my life.

Just my thoughts...
:surfweb:

We went twice when it was playing in Toronto. :thumbsup2

Phew! I just read about 50 pages. That's what I get for not checking the boards for a couple of weeks. Darn work gets in the way! :lmao:

First - HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! Thanks to all who have put their lives on the line for me and my family!

I have come to the decision that I need to take a leave of absence from work to keep up with the board. Guess my days off this week will be spent sitting infront of this computer catching up. The grass can always be cut next week :rotfl:

A belated Happy Memorial Day to all those that are serving or have served. :thumbsup2

It is most definitely discipline... If it is your child, then it is always discipline... :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Jon

Jon, you just need the right job and boss... Most days I can surf, DIS and still get my job done before I leave the office. Sometimes I have to bring work home and DIS gets put off until later. My boss's boss (who I sit near)gets it. My boss doesn't - but he is a knucklehead and sits 1000 miles away, so...

Oh, yes, today is most assuredly a DIS day... I am working from home and spending the vast majority of my day printing more magnets, cutting magnets out, and taking pictures of what they look like on my garage door... and sending them to DH, who is working (seriously working...) :rotfl2:

Wholly smokes! I'm sure I'm not the first to say this :rotfl2:, but I have about 15 pages that I need to catch up on!

In the meantime, I just wanted to say thank you for all the compliments on the dress I wore to Peter's wedding. Funny thing is that you can't even see the interesting part of the dress! I'll see if I can manage to get a full-length picture for you.

Also, I'll get an updated Inbound Barcelona Flight List out this evening or Wednesday morning. If you haven't already, PM me if you want to be included. If you're not familiar with it, check out Page 1, Post 2 on our next thread (Chapter 6).

Have a good Monday. Oh wait...it's Tuesday already!

DD and her family headed back to OR early this morning. It was a fun 4 days with them. Now to get all those towels and sheets washed. :laundy: I'm baking bread, lawn needs to be mowed.....back to real life. :sad2:

I have finally started getting organized. I have finished two dresses for DD so at least she will look nice for dinner.

Oh the topic of Barcelona and young children - DD was 2 last time we were there. She was toilet trained so we didn't use change rooms - but the public toilets were - lets just say interesting. We did find it a bit difficult with the stroller - often there was no lift or ramps to get to subways, shops and restaurants, the older parts were difficult with uneven surfaces etc. Oh and people don't seem to see the prams or kids - they sort of just walk right through them.

Oh yeah and eating times in spain are interesting. everything shuts by about four and re-opens after eight, so carry snacks and plan accordingly.

However we survived - still had a good time and are looking forward to going again.

:)michelle

This is such good information! Thank you to all our DIS friends for helping us with an adventure in new territory! :grouphug:

I believe that the "no jeans" only applies to Palo.

Hey Everyone.

I will be packing capri pants, dressy tanks/shirts and dresses for dinners. I'm not big into formal wear but I know Amanda will make me buy something "formalish". I tend to get cold in the Buena Vista theater. On our last cruise (Jan of this year), I was so cold I took the blanket from our stateroom to watch the movies. I know that sounds crazy but after I walked in with my blankie, a bunch more people went back and got theirs. That is really the only place I tend to get cold on the ship.

The laundry room on deck 6 midship. We are just a couple of doors down from it. So it will be really easy for me to pop in a load at weird hours. Come say HI if your in the neighborhood.
Hope everyone has a great day!

Oh my goodness, that cinema is soooooo cold. We went to watch A Christmas Carol in 3D and I was sure they were just trying to make it 4D!!! Someone on the row behind went for a blanket, but I stuck it out as I couldn't believe they wouldn't turn the AC down. confused3 I will go prepared next time.
In fact on that cruise in late February the whole ship was freezing much of the time, honestly. The corridors were very nippy at time as were all the dining rooms.
