Thank you. I think he will just be very tired and his sleep schedule will be off for a few days.
:surfweb:

Oh, boy. How does he do it? Jet lag is my biggest worry for the WBTA. It's cool that at least we'll be gaining hours going westbound instead of losing them like on the eastbound. (I hope I got that right?)

Congrats on the half-marathon, Lynne. I'd be lucky if I could walk it!

Congrats on the half-marathon, Lynne. I'd be lucky if I could walk it!

Yeah you got it right :thumbsup2 It is so much easier on the WB than the EB!

When he or I travel east, we try to not drink any alcohol or caffeine on the flight. I try to sleep as much as I can on the plane though that is not easy. We try to arrive in the afternoon and go to bed at our regular time the first night. If I have trouble sleeping, I take some sleeping medication to be sure I get a good nights sleep.

It is always easier to come west than to go East.

Thanks for the pointers. That's what we'll try to do. Has anyone heard about some kind of drug that's supposed to help w/jet lag? Just wondering...

Litterally 30 mins away. Went to the cinema in Cardiff on Sunday so got caught up in the mayhem lol

Thats too bad, I cant wait to see the new twighlight film.

I think I can cope with jet lag better than most after doing night shft for 10 years. Good old wide awake club!

Air Lingus is now open for September 26th, 2010 JFK -> BCN. I checked a couple of other eastern airports and they were open for on-line booking too.

Thanks. I priced out Air Lingus from JFK to BCN on 9/15 and it was something like $458 ($501 after taxes and fees?) United flights from IAD to JFK were $82. So about $600 for the one way fare with two connections, if you can find a way to get your luggage from one flight to the other.

I really, really, really don't want to have to make 2 connections, though the routing I just mentioned has one connection before and one after the long flight. Where can you fly non-stop to Barcelona from in the US, preferably east of Chicago?

I work a couple of nights each month and each one is a killer - it takes me about 3 days to recover. At least we don't have to worry about jet-lag on our outbound flight this time - one advantage to living in the UK for this cruise.

PJ I may be going mad but if you're flying on the 26th don't you miss the cruise?

Thats probably worse than doing it fullt ime.
I think these work by trying to reduce dehydration! I would just think that drinking more would have the same effect.
I am terrible for not drinking on flights, I hate the toilets(as like everybody!) and cant be bothered to get up and go.I know its not clever.

:scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:Thats NOT good.

As far as I can tell ALL US n/s to BCN are east of Chicago.

Off the top of my head... (found old post, I will paste here instead of guessing!)

Philadelphia (PHL) on US Airways #742 lv 6:30pm arr 8:35 am (This flight is also a code share for Spanair JK9786

Atlanta (ATL) on Delta 114 Arr BCN 8:43 am. Code Share with: Air France and KLM

JFK-- 2 n/s flights
JFK--Delta 94 Arrive 7:15 am. Code Share: Air France, Aero Mexico, KLM

JFK--American Airlines 152 Arrive 8:48 am. Code Share: Iberia, El Al

Newark (EWR) Continental 120 Arr 9 am (Continental is currently changing alliances, no code share info yet)

I think that is it for the US.

There are two out of Canada: Toronto and Montreal on Air Canada

I posted about this maybe a week or two ago so I don't remember all the facts. Sometimes my mind is like a steel sieve (instead of the steel trap it should be!)

Like you I REALLY don't want to have more than one connection. My luck isn't that good. My luggage or I will get lost somewhere! :lmao:

Our other option is to fly n/s to a European destination and from there into BCN. Lots of flights out of LHR if you can get there from where you are!

Still thinking about our options, but will probably not book anything until we get back in mid Nov from my FIRST flight overseas. :cheer2:

Kathy just remember that if you fly to a European destination before BCN you may have issues with baggage allowance. For us flying from the UK even with BA (who have reasonable luggage compared to cheaper low cost airlines like Ryan Air) you can only take 1 peice of hold luggage per person before they start charging you and this I believe has to be under 20kg (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). It does mean that you may have to purchase extra luggage space on the flight and this can often outweigh costs of travelling within the US then direct to BCN. I think its £30 per case extra on BA. We're going to try to take 3 cases between the 2 of us with an extra case inside one of them for on the way back.

What time does the port in Barcelona open, and is it possible to check for upgrades at the port as we do in the US? I was looking at a hotel shuttle schedule to the port, and the first shuttle is at 11am, which I assume gets to the port around 11:30 or so. We've always arrived at PC around 9:30am so this seems late to us, but we've never cruised out of Barcelona.

Is that time good, or late?

If the port does open up earlier, and there is a way to check for upgrades (if available) does it make any sense for one person to head over early, leaving the rest of the family to come later on the hotel shuttle with the luggage? Can one person check everyone in at the port in Barcelona like you can in the US?

Glad everybody is getting flights fixed out.

So if the port is open can you get on the ship that early?

Just wondering when would be best time to get on board, think we have to leave apartment at 11am so then just catch a taxi to port?

And then Disney Magic ~~~here we come

Most--if not all--US airlines have just recently changed luggage allotments for international travel. For example, on Continental we can only check a single 50# (about 22 kg) bag for free. I believe that the second bag is $50 now, so in line with your price. We used to get two bags for free.

I think that US carriers are still a little more generous on what you can carry on than some on the carriers I was looking at for the short flight. That will probably change too!;)

Luckily my DH is flying 1st class to London when we go, so we have a little better luggage terms thru him! 3 bags up to 70# apiece!!! We are still trying for 1 bag apiece because we will be going out of London on a train to where his meeting is and then back to London for the weekend before we head back. Just too much to haul around.
-- But we may need the 70#:rotfl:

Hi Everyone, feeling like the "lizzy come late to the party girl" but I am soooo jeolous of all of you so far along in your flight research! I keep reading along and jotting down notes for when I am ready to purchase. Need to find out how refunds work in case something comes up between now and then. No milage or points to us, gotta pay real money.

And then there is my whole "poor relation" status being booked in a Cat11 (steerage anyone?) which is entirely fine with my DH and I. We actually enjoyed the lack of light for sleeping and if I wanted it, we just went out on Deck, and room size did not seem to be an issue at all for us, then again? we are used to 4 kids in our "hotel suites" with us:rotfl:.

Just wanted to say we are getting very excited as the weeks count down! Haven't started on days yet, I know once I do the time will fly by. Might take me that long to figure out the problem with my tikker at the rate I am going.

Also haven't seen us added to the roll call over on the webpage although I did send an email with our particulars. Any idea how long that takes?

I have an email into DU (our TA) about the new Cat breakdowns now showing up on DCL for our cruise. We booked our Cat11 because it guarneteed us a rooom on Deck5,6,or 7. Now CAt11's included Deck2, not our favorite. Ugh. Even dropped down from a Cat9 and then a Cat10 just to get the higher deck. so frustrating. I asked to be assigned a room NOW so I can just know where we will be.

About luggage weight, I am really wondering if you can ever really know for sure and they won't change their minds when you check in as that has been our experience a few times with our college age son who has checked in domestic and had transfers to get him where he was ending (international) and both times I recieved wrong information after asking repeatedly. I do admit to being both cheap and tenatious enough though both times to get additional fees they wanted to charage me waived as it was their agents who gave me bad into. <sigh>

Somtimes arranging for travel is fun, a hobby of mine almost, but sometimes it almost feels like a battle to be won!

Here is an article CNN did about jet lag and Melatonin.

Also here is a Melatonin link:

I have never tried it, just passing on the info.

Thanks!

That would seem logical to me, too.

Oh, I feel exactly the same, but for a flight as long as this one, I think a trip or two will be in the cards.

In preparation for the trip, we bought 2 rolling duffel bags; I think the captain made that suggestion. What a difference! Our old suitcases weigh between 15 and 20 lbs each, and the duffels only come in between 6 & 8. I also plan to bring those new Purell sheets that have detergent and softener in them and then not bring so many clothes. I hate having to do laundry on vacation, but I hate paying baggage charges even more!
