Do you remember when this special was? Earlier or later in the cruise? That would definitely be more than worth it to us :thumbsup2

I think the first time was about mid way thru the cruise and the second was near the end. I know it was handy for so many. I had just washed the day before so it did not help me..lol but the laundry room is easy to get to, has about 8 or washers and dryers and is not bad at all to use. I washed during the evening one night when I did not care to go to a show that night.... and early one morning and did not have to wait either time.

What do you mean, they take them from you? Meaning if they see it in your bag they take it or if they see you using it? We have taken travel irons on many cruises that claim to "not allow" them and have always just been extra careful and put them away in a cabinet and have never had them "taken."

Just curious if DCL will confiscate if they see it in your luggage.

Amanda

As mentioned before... they do xray your luggage and yes, they will take them out. They return them to you at the end of the cruise.
Please do not take an iron or candles on the cruise......

Hi Amanda!

All the cruiselines x-ray luggage to look for such things. Yes, sometimes they miss them, but they do look.

If they find one during the luggage search, they will keep it until the end of the cruise. I'm not sure how Disney deal with it, but on other lines you usually get a note saying you need to report to a room to retrieve your bag, and they tell you what they've removed and when you can retrieve it. I've heard this referred to as "getting sent to the naughty room" (usually for booze smuggling, but also for electrical items like irons).

I'm really sorry if I sound preachy on this one, but this worries me. Travel irons are not safe - they are a fire hazard, no matter how careful you are. There's no automatic shutoff, and I've heard of lots of incidents of minor fires and damage to bedspreads, carpets, desktops, etc on the ships. There are very good reasons why they don't want people to bring them.

Fire on a ship is something I don't want to chance... we'll be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! (yes, I'm a worrier!) Remember the Carnival Spendour fire last year? That fire wasn't caused by an iron, but can you imagine how it would have turned out if they hadn't been so close to a port?

Unlike Royal Caribbean (who should rethink this!), Disney DOES have irons and ironing boards available for use - so why take a chance? Pack some wrinkle-release spray (if you can't buy some, make some out of fabric softener and water in a spray bottle) for the first day, then go press your clothes in the laundry room.

You can join the laundry room party! :laundy:

I apologise if I sound like a nag, but this is one rule I'm happy to agree with Disney on.

You are so right! No matter how careful we think we are... anything can distract us... Let's keep our trip safe and no irons please......

We were only a few days away from the laundry room on our 14 night B2B caribbean cruise. It was so easy to quickly check when it was empty and we were never disturbed by riverdancing :rotfl2:

How many days away from the laundry room where you? :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Definately!!

I've always had the best chats with people in the laundry room - usually waiting for the iron on formal night! That's okay - it's nice to have some downtime :)

So this sounds like the height of civility to me... a laundry room! No more socks hanging in my cabin! :woohoo:

I always do my ironing first thing so I don't have to wait for irons when formal night rolls around.

I am visualizing your sox hanging all over your room and in the sun on the lounge chairs :laundy: :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Speaking of all this iron business....my iron at home shuts off way too quickly. Doesn't it know that I need the time it takes to heat up to catch up on my Disboard threads. I mean, I have to have priorities here!!!:lmao:

Mine does the same thing... gets so irritating....lol

Let me also mention that irons are not the only no no's. As someone else said earlier... NO CANDLES OF ANY KIND! Now with that being said... I like a few candles to set a mood as well as anyone. So I take the electronic ones. The tea lite candles that take batteries.. they work great and you can also put one in the bathroom at night for a small night light. I get up at least once every night just to go to the bathroom and see my pretty little candle.... :rolleyes1

Does anyone have a list of the nightly shows that they would recommend for small children versus shows to skip? I was thinking we could enjoy extra splash pool time on the evenings there is a show that doesn't appeal to our kiddos (ages 5 and 1). I know someone had mentioned that not all shows are Disney-ish or geared towards families. With a list, we could plan or day more accordingly of if we are going to skip the early show that evening. (We have late dining)

Thanks in advance! :thumbsup2

I don't know what washer/dryers DLP use, but everytime I've used a washer in WDW they are so slow. Are these not the same as the 'normal' washers?

They aren't slow and they actually have a visible timer on them, so you know exactly when to come back.

I HOPE people leave their irons and steamers at home and use the ones in the laundry room. I'd rather see you wrinkled, like I will be, than have to escape from the fire that could result. call me a worrier, but rules are rules for a reason.

I do understand what everyone is saying but the same could be said about curling irons, hot rollers and hair dryers and people still bring them. I got a naughty note one time about leaving the curling iron plugged in (even though it was off) and I don't do that anymore, but I've never had anything confiscated. Last year we did the BTB Med and WBTA and our friends brought a travel iron/steamer and it was a God send...although you're right...you make some great friends in the laundry room--and I'm still looking forward to learning that River Dance!!!

Curling irons and rollers do not get near as hot as an iron does. The chances of them starting a fire are much less than an iron. But we still need to make sure we unplug those things before leaving our cabins just as a safety measure.

I know a travel iron would be a god send... a wonderful thing to have and I do have one, but.. I would never bring it on a cruise. It is just too dangerous in the middle of the ocean. I decided a long time ago it is just not worth the risk. There are too many other people and so many children on the ship. I would never want to be the one that caused a devastating fire. Disney has provided us with all we need to take care of our laundry and ironing. Now I sound like I'm lecturing too....:rotfl2:

Good thing I don't bring those either! And if I could get away with it, I'd leave the makeup at home as well. I will at least wear it to dinner. :rotfl:

I'm with you girl... no makeup except dinner.... and sometimes not even then..:rotfl2:

I had a friend actually die from a hotel fire in the New Orleans area several years ago, which was started in the laundry room. I'm now one of those who request a room near the fire escape... lower floor... especially now that I have two little ones to protect.

I'm so sorry, MandyGirl. That is a potent testimony.
I also request near fire exit, and actually count the doors to it now as I know how quickly smoke can obscure vision.

True that other appliances are dangerous as well :scared1: Even when turned off the electricity is still running to the appliance if it is plugged in. I think hair dryers are provided in the Magic already (at least, they were a few years ago when we last were on it) so that may be one less plug-in needed. I guess they've decided to draw the line at irons.

I think the washers are around 30 min. Depends on what setting you use. The dryers take about 45 min. also depends on the setting. You do not want to put more than 1 load in the dryer or you will be waiting much longer. For heavy things like jeans, you can swipe your card twice and double your minutes.

The magic does have hair dryers in the dressing room. Not sure you could really call it a "dressing room" as it is a little small to get dressed in :rotfl2: The hair dryers are very slow (like the ones in most hotels) so I do take my own hairdryer and I do take a curling iron and a hot pad to place it on as I use it. Like I said before, curling irons don't get near as hot as an iron.

We have just the opposite problem. Ours are fine with staying home in their crates while we're out. They have beds, blankies, toys - I wouldn't mind staying there for the day! Three have boarded with no problems at all, but Neville and Juanita have never boarded before. Neville has stayed with my parents, but never with "strangers," and Juanita has always gone with us/me.

So to get ready for this, I've taken Neville and Juanita to doggie day-care at the boarding facility, twice now, with several more visits scheduled. Luna has gone, too, as Neville seems to feel more secure when he's with her - and she loves the place! Well, Neville has been fine - he was a little shy the first time, but much better the second. Juanita, on the other hand, has tried to bolt from the crate every time they tried to take her out, then bitten and peed on the staff! I'm lucky they're very patient and understanding of dogs with "issues."

I'm thinking Neville might be ready to try an over-nighter with Luna. If he does well with that, I'll cut back on his day-care and let Juanita go a couple of times a week to give the staff more time with her. Luna will still go with her - she and Juanita adore each other, even though Luna is about six times Juanita's size.

Yay Pat! Its great to hear that the furbabies are making progress (well at least Neville is.) Here's hoping that Juanita will warm up to the idea.

Most modern curling and straightening irons power off if left on for too long. Yes they still use electricity, but I think the fire hazard is not a huge problem if the item is plugged in but all power is off - after all, they do leave those hairdryers plugged in at hotels and some cruise ships. But I always unplug and stow my hair devices b/c its just a good idea.

Just a word of warning though, the cruise line hairdryers will also power off if used for too long! I know this is a safety precaution and I get that, but if you have long thick hair as I do, it powers off before I am completely dry. So just keep in mind that if you have long hair, you may want to bring a hairdryer from home. For me, half-dry hair is much worse than wet hair b/c my hair will frizz and do this: :scared1:

Don't want to sound like I'm sticking my nose in either but just want to agree with what people have been saying about the travel irons. I've never cruised before but the thought of someone using an iron in their room is actually quite scary!
Let's hope dcl manage to spot them in luggage if people insist on packing them! :)

Dawn, I don't think you sound like a nag...you raise an excellent point and one I totally agree with too.

I'll be in the laundry room, along with many more no doubt, patiently waiting to do either laundry or ironing...see you there:)

Refresh my memory, please...what is ironing, again??

:rotfl:

:thumbsup2 Yep, that's what I remember as well for the $30 laundry offer - I had just washed too!! And yes....love my little tea candle!! Thanks for the reminder...I have just started my "cruise pile" in my son's vacant (sniff, sniff) room!!

.

sorry to all the ironing fanatics, but i plan on not doing any ironing at all. its my holiday and i plan on not having to do any ironing (i HATE ironing). so look out for the person in the (hopefully not too) crinkly clothes!

That's awesome....i give in for the fancy dinners too....but we're on vacation right! and nobody cares

definition for IRONING = Step 1. open closet door, get out clothes to be ironed, Step 2. Get laundry bag from closet as well. Step 3. Put clothes needing to be ironed into the bag. Step 4. Fill out the slip of paper that was attached to the laundry bag. Step 5. Sit bag outside stateroom door. The next afternoon (just like magic) your clothes will be hanging in your cabin all freshly ironed.... :rolleyes1

Ahhh, now that, I can follow! :thumbsup2

Except I always left my laundry bag on my bed & my stateroom host has always magically carted it away....and my "ironing" came back the next day, and just as magically appeared hanging on my closet door!! :wizard:

Oh, for someone who was wondering...they do have expedited, same day service....for a fee... but not on day one, I don't think. (?)

not a fanatic about ironing for sure....but it was there and it was handy....that being said...I don't have an iron and I don't intend to iron and I don't use a curling iron anymore either although I must say mine did get pretty darn hot. The good thing about DCL...the WON'T confiscate my wine LOL!

I am so with you! Every time I feel an urge to iron I shall have wine! That'll fix any odd urges to look pristine. No one is looking at me when Mickey Mouse is around, anyway!

I'm glad they don't confiscate the important things like wine too! I'll trade ironing for wine any day!

I do think they confiscate wine that is in your main baggage though So, make sure you don't pack that special expensive bottle and carry it onboard yourself!!!

Reminder/For new cruisers....
