Ok so I'm not trying to start any arguments with this post as I know it is a touchy subject...


But how formal is formal on DCL. Some Cruises we have gotten away with a suit and others we needed a tux to fit in.

We can each bring a few suits, however if that is "too casual" for Formal Night we will rent a few tuxs from Cruise line formal.

Thoughts?

John rented a tux onboard for our first long cruise. He looked wonderful He also took his suit which he wore for semi formal night. However, now he takes a very nice dark suit and saves the money. I think if he had his own tux he would take it though, but there is no where else he would wear one.

You do see everything worn on formal night, but on these longer cruises more people go to town and dress up. I love to see some of the ladies in their ballgowns. My formal dress is really a smart maxi dress. Like Claire, I have never felt right in a dress, but I just loved dressing up for the first time last year. I will be taking the same dress this time.

its like weddings, you love to see what beautiful dresses everyone is wearing, thats what im looking forward to too

I'm right there with you. I'm nervous about being underdressed. I don't have fancy dresses, at least ones that I didn't wear to a Prom. And when you start considering limited budgets, limited suitcase space/weight... for a woman what is "dressy enough?"

For me, I have always gone with more cocktail attire than prom, but I know what you mean. Before we started cruising all I had was former bride's maid outfits, which people do wear, but were never my style, since I did not pick them.

My mother says that every woman should have that one "little black dress" that can work for all functions. I have found a few. Places I shop, not sure if this applies to everyone given location: Macy's (often they have sales on out of season formal wear), a place called Dress Barn--which may be specific to Virginia, but they have an outlet near us and they have stuff from formal to cocktail.

I have been lucky to find things off the sales rack at major department stores in the U.S. or at outlets (we have a lot of those in VA). I tend to go with just below the knee or at the knee for formal night, and we have been on many cruise lines (this is our 1st DCL but 12th overall.)

I find often that the shorter dresses are more comfortable and take up less space. I also try to go for fabrics that hang well, so that they don't require a lot of ironing.

As for my DH, sometimes he does a tux, but probably not on this cruise since it will be warmer and we will be using this cruise to transport from our post in Europe back to the U.S. We need to be extra careful with our luggage, as when we get back we have no stuff until probably mid-Nov.

When we first started cruising he wore a tux all the time, but then realized he could easily wear a nice suit and be more comfortable and fit in fine, even on the more formal lines like HAL and Celebrity. He bought a tux for our wedding, and has been using it since then (taking advantage of the expandable waist pants ) and adding different color items to it. He also likes the white dinner jacket and will often wear that vice a whole tux. He saves the tux now for special cruises and holiday ones. Although sometimes he decides he wants it at the last minute, so who knows? I would say though that it was a good investment if you plan to cruise a lot.

For me the issue comes with shoes. I have a small shoe problem and while I can find easily portable light weight dresses, shoes on the other hand...tougher. I have yet to find that perfect "little black shoe" that fits all my clothes, but am getting better with time, luggage restrictions, and practice cruising.

Tony always wears a tuxedo for formal night, and a shirt and tie with formal trousers for semi formal. The formal trousers double up for Palo and villains night.

I wait until the last 20 seconds and then jump in with the max I would pay for the item. I have to say I am usually successful 95% of the time. I don't ever bid in the first instance, I only watch the item till the end. If you bid, it just bumps the price up. Hover then pounce

I think I will have to give your technique a try At the moment I have 43 items in my watch list !!!!!

Expect two formal nights and one semi-formal. Does that sound about right, folks?

For anyone in the UK who sells on Ebay .. we have a free listing weekend again this weekend. I need to clear out my wardrobe just so that I can refill it again so I might try and sell a few cruise dresses I have lost interest in.

Did he have success with being properly fitted with the tux onboard? Curt is afraid they wouldn't have his size. I think in US, pant size is 30"x32". He's a skinny boy!

Curt's afraid of renting the tux for pickup onboard, then having an issue when getting it... and being short a required outfit.

Most of our cruises have been HAL and X for 7-nt cruises -- and never felt out of place in a suit. This is our first try with DCL (or a cruise longer than 7 nts).

I've found it - by Unisa. But the heel is starting to have issues. I bought the pair one time when hubby and I realized neither of us grabbed the garment bag when walking out the door to go see his grandparents in another state. Got to do some shopping with his grandmother, and she spotted them!

I started the "Couch to 5K" app yesterday ... we'll see... if I could lose this baby weight it may put me in the mood for dress shopping!!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to confirm that we will in fact not be able to go now this year. The adoption we are in the process of will not be final and we are unable to take the children out of the country until it is. Hopefully there will be another transatlantic next year. If not, I think the children we have are much more worth missing a cruise!

That's a shame you can't make the cruise, but hopefully the protocol and paperwork will run smoothly for you

I make my SIL and GK's dress up for the pics!! Here is one of my three "men" on a NYE cruise in 2007.

That's why I love formal night, your "men" look so handsome in their tuxes.

When dh cruises he wears a suit. However, the old lady (that would be me) thinks guys (young or old) look HOT in tuxedos whether black coat or white! And a mess dress or kilt is worth of a swoon

Dennis and I love to dress up, but rarely get the chance to. He might bring a tux or just wear his "dress blues" (retired Air Force ). You will be fine wearing suits.

I'm going to give all you dieters who struggle - some serious sympathy and maybe inspiration. I started going to the gym in August 2008 when Fibromyalgia go so bad I was miserable. First did simple stretching exercises in the pool - then more and more. In March 2009, I weighed 267 pounds. I've lost 55 pounds since then and still struggling (I'd like to lose another 55), BUT my blood glucose is under control and I am off one of my BP meds AND all my asthma meds. If I could offer anyone some advice - GET MOVING! And drink LOTS of water.

John was waist 32". His tux fitted very well, though John isn't skinny!! I do believe they keep some spares onboard in case of problems.

As far as I know, it is nothing from Disney, it is something the Disers made up for one of the formal nights. Purple and Black in horor of Malificent, if i am not mistaken. If I am wrong, please someone correct me.

I have been having so much fun making door magnets. Now that I figured out how to do it, I have been playing, playing, playing instead of working. Slow at work. I have so many door magents I will have to switch them off after the first week. ha ha ha. No one will be able to miss our door. SOOOOOOOOO excited. My Iphone trip countdown gets me more excited everyday.

Please don't worry about that! As others have said, dresses tend to run the gamut. One "little black dress" can go a long way. Like I've said, Dennis and I love to dress up, so I know I'm going to go overboard (so to speak) on the clothes - even if I have to pay for an extra bag.

We live in the cultural wasteland of the universe. The closest anyone gets to dressing up around here is taking off their baseball caps. We're more of the "Nick & Nora" (as in "The Thin Man"), "Fred & Ginger" types - except I'm nowhere near as tall and thin as Nora or Ginger. We love that style and elegance. So if you give us a chance to dress like that, we're going for it. But we totally get that we're a bit odd that way, and most normal people don't do that.

I'm with you! The only time I'll bid early is if I'm going to be out and can't bid in the last 15 seconds. I've even bid from my cell phone - but that's always tricky, as the internet connection is slooooow (in spite of what AT&T claims).

Ummm, okay, true confession time. I'm up to 126 items. Not all dresses, though, and a lot I won't bother with. Sometimes I just like to see what things go for.

We don't have free listing weekend here, but I do need to sell some of my stuff. I was just looking at the seller options and prices. It's pretty confusing, so I may need to ask your advice (please!) when I'm ready to list things.

Ooooh, thanks for the link! Those are so cool! They're pretty much done for creative grooming competitions. You have to have a really calm dog and a lot of patience for this. My friend Denice (the groomer) and I would LOVE to do it, though! I agree, the Giraffe is the best, though the Panda is pretty cute, too. The others are interesting, but I think the Giraffe is great because you almost forget it's a dog!

It is definitely addictive!!! Once you get started, you just can't stop. It's fun to see how many different ones you can make. I did the same thing, Debra, I switched them around during the cruise and also moved some from the back of the door to the front!!! FUN!
