Separate checks?

Okay I have not read all the replies, but I waited tables in college and I ALWAYS ALWAYS asked before I even took orders how they wanted the checks. Because it's SO much easier to do separate checks in advance rather than split up after-the-fact. And if you are working in a restaurant that requires one check for larger parties, I would make sure they know BEFORE they order that is the policy.

I hate separate checks. Luckily when we go out with friends we just toss in money to cover our share of the bill or one of us picks up the whole thing. I wouldn't go out with a group if they were going to ask for separate checks. I think it's kind of cheap. Say someone out of 6 ordered a few beers. That is 3 beers divided between 6 people. At maybe $7 a beer or a total of $21 to split between 6 people? That is less then $4 a person extra. LOL We aren't talking $100s of dollars here!
