Selling Magic Bands on Ebay?

Can MBs be re-used?
We had them for our Sept trip and I tossed 'em... never thought about info security, nor re-using them...

Yes, they can be re-used and are listed on your MDE account, but they can be de-activated through your MDE account and also re-activated. No reason not to keep them for a future trip unless someone really just wants a different color band for their next trip. :-)

We kept the first set and they still randomly sent us a second set for the next trip (we live locally, go frequently). The third time around they handed us 4 at the check-in desk as I hadn't brought the ones we already had in.

Hence, I see no reason to keep the bands right now...if they don't give them away as freely in the future I'd say keep them.

There was some talk of a charge for Magic Bands in the future. So depending on when the future is or when the battery runs out, I will be keeping ours.

I started out putting my first name on my magic band. Now ....I'm using character names ....ie...Pluto, Mickey, etc. I go a few times a year, usually Oct through May, so I'm busy collecting tons of bands....not on purpose, just the way Disney has the program set up.

I had no idea!!! We were given two sets at check in, one for our one night room-only reservation and another for our package reservation... I tossed them all (they were generic gray, although if they were colored, I'm still not sure I would have thought to keep them). We should be getting new ones (now I hope!) when we get to the Swan in two weeks... I will keep those! (although they, too, will be gray, presumably?)

Will the Swan issue them w/our names inside?

No, they will only have your names inside if they are customized ahead of time on MDE, which I don't think Swolphin guests are able to do yet.

So we have our bands from last October. We have two resort stays coming up and both have emailed me saying to order our magic bands. But when I go in the system it shows our old bands. Do I need to deactivate those to order new ones?

Interesting... we had our names inside when we were there in Sept, yet we had not pre-customized... however we were staying at Pop...

No, you should not need to deactivate the old ones. We have 2 sets from our December trip, and have already customized 3 others for trips in March and October. When you click on Magic Bands/Cards, it doesn't give you the option to verify shipping address? Is your resort stay linked properly?

Well, maybe I am wrong then? I thought if you didn't customize, you just got generic gray without the name.

Magic Bands DO NOT store your credit card information any personal identifying information on them. It stores a small discrete piece of information that is linked to the information on Disney's system about you.

We are headed for our first magic band trip in March, but I've already noticed that Disney includes a means for people to disable the card information stored on MDE, so I would presume that the same is true for MBs and that past the time of your resort visit, the information on your MBs should also deactivated.

I would still sleep at night if mine made it into the trash on accident. Although, just because I am a total paranoid queen with no sense of reality, I'd likely degauss a magic band I was going to throw into the trash.

Someone who's hubs works with RFID technology took apart a MB and said they DO carry information about you on them if you've used them for charging, etc. Said they could pull off your name, CC numbers, and a few other things if I recall correctly. So I wouldn't swallow that kool-aid so easily...

We didn't customize ours for our trip I'm October, but we're given gray ones with our names in them upon check in. We kept ours for future trips, I kind of thought that was one of the main points to them?

Someone on the DIS boards used a reader and pulled the coding off the bands and posted it on the DIS boards. It trust that far more than "someone who's hub."

No CC information is stored on the band. There is no need to store CC information on the band. It makes no logical sense for Disney to store CC information on the bands.

Your CC information is not on the bands.

There is a possibility for fraud with Magic Bands, but it is not through a download of your CC off your Magic Band.

ETA: Here's the thread. The poster even included instructions on how to download the data using your phone if so inclined.

ETA2: Just read the coding on the bands. There is an encrypted piece of information on the bands, but the program uses AES. AES is the current gold standard of encryption. There are rumors the NSA has partially broken AES, but no black hat has broken the encryption even partially. My thinking would be that the AES encrypted data is the relevant PII (Personally Identifiable Information) on the MB. In this case, I suspect it's the unique identifier that identifies you on their closed system. There is no way it's your CC information. That wouldn't pass a PCI audit for a mom and pop flower shop!

That person is misinformed. There is never a CC number on the band. They are used for room charging. The hotel is the one with the CC #.

When you charge you get a # that is NOT your CC #. You can see this on your receipt, the same as when you did a room charge with your KTTK cards.

After throwing our Magic Bands away in the trash, I thought to look them up on Ebay. They are selling for like $30 apiece:scared1: First of all, is it safe to sell a magic band that has (had?) my personal and pass info on it?

Second, why are they selling for so much? I saw something about Disney Infinity??

If it's safe to sell them even with them having had our info on them I'll go dig them out of the trash:rotfl:

You can put the bands on the Disney Infinity and it can unlock parts of the game - I think you get a dragon when you place it on there.

I'm not up on Disney Infinity, but I guess a dragon is valuable if people will pay $30 on Ebay to unlock one.

Even weirder than the magic bands selling on Ebay are the mymagic+ flash drives selling for $30+ on there:eek: I looked it up when I was about to trash ours this morning. Now I wouldn't be afraid to sell that thing...as far as I know, it's generic. Again though, really not sure why anyone would pay $30+ for this???

Nope. They sent us a second set and we didn't inactivate the first set...then they gave us a gray set at check-in on our most recent trip.

We did not get the thumb drive for out October or December trips, but one just arrived for our bounceback trip (or maybe it was late). I it too cute and you can store on it.
