Selfie sticks no longer allowed at Walt Disney World

Haha. My mom just bought one a few weeks ago. She loves the idea of selfie sticks. I wouldn't even help her pick one out. Sorry I think they look stupid, but I do see one in my future. However I think it's a little funny that the vlogger event they held in January had tons of participants using the sticks.

I do own a monopod for our digital video camera. We use it at tournaments but don't take it on vacations.

Well I can tell the consensus on the board here is a selfie sticks are a no . And I love a lot of people have said you're entitled to your opinion but you are wrong if you think selfie sticks are bad . For now is some people have said it doesn't look like tripods monopods or other stuff like that are banned . My wife has a selfie stick that she uses for taking pictures in the house of stuff she creates to get different angles say a doll house and take a picture from a unique angle so I do not personally use a selfie stick or like them either . I do have monopods and tripod and my wife selfie stick the part that attaches to the cell phone can easily be attached to my mono pod or tripod so an easy way right now to circumvent would be to use a mono pod or tripod with the selfie stick attachment on it .
Finally I'm getting down to my major concern how many people on this board used to sell phones so to truly band selfie's and selfie sticks you either have to ban tripods and monopods which will be very quickly adapted or bad cell phones all together sell phones will not be allowed inside the park.

I have to agree with a few other people on here that what about the people taking pictures with iPads that does block the view and cause annoyances and what about people walk around the park bumping into you while they're texting I do not go to the parking frequent basis but I do go to malls in my area and I have been run into by kids and adults texting.

I guess my main opinion is slippery slope based on public opinion what will be Banamex what will happen will we not allowed to be brought in
Again I do think the park should ban selfie sticks on rods any and all rides it's dangerous you should be allowed to stand up on a ride stick your hands out of a ride it's stuff like that happens and you get caught it should be automatically ride should be stopping you should be escorted off the premises . Think the band of selfie six altogether in the park is kind of useless just because an individual is a responsible with the selfie stick and had somebody doesn't mean all selfie six should be banned . Again last time at the park and one time when I was at the beach on the West Coast I got hit from behind by a lady with the stroller now we see lots of strollers all the time but this one lady without the intention was talking about man into me so should we ban all baby strollers if enough people get annoyed/injured by them just giving you stuff to think about
And again hate selfie sticks

:confused3:confused3 What are you exactly trying to say?

I don't think it would have been a problem had people used their brains. Using it on rides when you may not see a low overhanging object coming on a fast ride could lead to serious injury if the camera snaps off and smacks people behind them in the face at a high rate of speed. And people walking around with them walking slow so they capture "everything" is like being stuck on a highway in the left lane by a dump truck going 30 MPH on a highway. No, no need to rush, but sometimes if you are trying to get to a show or a fast pass, you may need to. If everyone used common courtesy (move to the side and let people pass) and not used them on rides, I doubt it would have come to this. They do have a rule of no pictures on rides so anyone doing so is breaking the rules.

The use of selfie sticks to elevate a camera for things like Wishes was annoying but Disney wouldn't have banned them for that reason. IMHO it became a big deal for them when selfie stick use started interfering with ride operation. Tripods and monopods will get the same treatment if they start interfering with ride operation, too (unlikely).

You got my point what is Disney trying to say if they wanted to ban selfie sticks they should have banned them from the park from the beginning. if they are only worried about ride safety then they should been banned them from the rides only .
If the reason for banning them from the park is ride safety and people safety, people bumping into people with selfie stick being poked by selfie sticks well then they need to ban definitely sell phone because I've been run into and through by a few people texting

I would rather deal with walking around someone using a selfie stick or cell phone out in the park than worry about ride stoppages and injuries with them on rides. Much less potential for injury and litigation.

They tried banning them just on rides. It appears they quickly found out if people have them along, they do not have the restraint to not use them on rides. I think Disney is doing the only thing they can.

And I think we all know they're not banning cell phones. They are too integrally involved in the use of MDE.

I think ride stoppages and fear of injury/litigation is probably the reason behind this. Disney doesn't want someone losing an eye on one of its rides...that's bad PR.
According to an article I read this morning (can't link to it because the website appears to be banned here), the reasons were 3-fold:
  1. The danger on fast-moving rides with the possibility of losing a grip on the stick or the camera coming loose.
  2. The inability of ride operators to effectively enforce the rule due to widespread disregard. If they shut down a ride every time a selfie stick was pulled out, some rides would be out of commission more than they would be operational. So, CMs began to look the other way in order to keep things running.
  3. The increasing complaints from guests about the impact of selfie sticks on their ability to enjoy shows and parade.
I pretty much believe #1 and #2 but if Disney was really concerned about the impact that selfie sticks have on "the show", they would ban a lot of other annoying devices that guests use.

That is not a rule. Only flash photography and video lighting are prohibited on some rides, but photography is generally allowed. Universal prohibits all photography and recording on attractions.

There are only 1 or 2 rides that prohibit all photos. I have heard the "no photography" announcement on Soarin and occasionally hear a report about the same on "Carousel of Progress". But even those are hit or miss.

The difference is that other forms of photography are limited by the length of one's arms.

Agreed, but large lit up screens on large smart phones or tablets are just as bad as a flash if you are sitting in the boat with the person using said device. I will not use my cell phone and turn off my LCD video display on my camera for this reason, but people generally only think of themselves.

IMO, these things are just as distracting as selfie sticks, but they do not pose an actual danger. I have no problem with the selfie stick ban because of that danger. I just wish people would think of others before they bust out their iPad to take a picture on a dark ride.

Actually that is correct but for most rides without the flash, it would just be a picture of dots.

I completely agree with you They just should have banded from the parks to begin with and not just the rides that's the part I don't like that kind of gives the impression of a slippery slope

Selfie sticks have only become super prevalent in the last 6 months to a year. Prior to that, you just didn't see them much. I don't remember seeing any in our trip in August, but by December they were everywhere. So I think they're as much on the front end of this as they could be.

Oh, absolutely! Using phones and tablets with screens on dark rides is totally bad form, and I think the screen itself could count as "video lighting." Photography is allowed on most rides though. Actually, if you take a flash picture in a dark ride, your picture is going to turn out lousy anyway, but you need a good camera to get the true effect,

I guess this wasn't an issue last May when we were there because I didn't notice any of them. Just from the pics posted in this thread I can see where these things are hazardous to the person using it and the person that is going to take a phone to the face should they lose it on a fast moving ride. The guy on IASW could easily reach out and damage the scenery. I don't believe in censorship or banning things, but in some circumstances people need to have common sense enforced on them for the safety of themselves and those around them.

Took a video camera on one of our trips many years ago and after 2 days it got left in the room, I wasn't enjoying my vacation through a screen at all. Live in the moment!!!
