Selfie sticks no longer allowed at Walt Disney World

As for having to watch Wishes through "a forest of selfie sticks," how is this different from watching through a forest of cell phones and iPads held up high? I understand selfie sticks add length, but they are much thinner than an arm holding an iPad way up high. I'm not trying to snark, I am genuinely curious.

Well, for Wishes it wasn't as problematic, but last time I was watching Celebrate the Magic, one person had their stick so high, that their phone took a square chunk right out out of an area of the castle to the side of the clock form my vantage point. Also, even people who raise their arms up usually can't hold them up that high for the entire duration of a show.

If your stick makes it past bag check, it is still a contraband item and I would think if any CM sees it out they will take action. Just leave it at home now.

I noticed the article didn't have any word on a similar ban at DLR.

First guess would be that with the mechanics and logistics of their bag check operations and locations compared to the other parks, they will have to sort out the "how to handle it" items first.

And I know a lot of you think this is an overreaction, but what else can they do. They have to keep stopping rides because of people using them, even when they have been asked not to and signs are posted. It's a safety issue, not to mention the lengthy restart times that sometimes result from a forced ride stop. If people won't considerately follow the rules, what else can be done?

I'm sure this issue jumped higher in priority every time a ride had to be stopped.

What about the iPad held up high by the person in the front row for parades and you are behind them!
Or the people that put their arms up for the photo on rides and then your face is blocked out of the picture?
People only think of themselves I am afraid!

Those are all unfortunate circumstances. But why should they refrain from solving from one problem just because they can't solve every other problem?

I think the big issue is that those issues were not causing ride stoppages.

I haven't been to DW since people started using these sticks so I don't have an opinion if they're annoying or not. Just wondering though if the real reason Disney is banning them is their own bottom line. If people can take pictures of their whole group without assistance, perhaps there's no need for them to purchase PhotoPass (or whatever it's called these days). Although I can definitely see how they could be dangerous on the faster rides. Just wondering...

I get that in certain circumstances they are a nuisance. But I am sad to see the ban from the perspective of everyone who has ever used them responsibly, myself included, and I do think it's a slippery slope in terms of what will be banned next.

I'm as skeptical as they come about Disney's desire to pad the bottom line, but I'm not buying that. I really think it has to do with ride stoppages.

Well I can tell the consensus on the board here is a selfie sticks are a no . And I love a lot of people have said you're entitled to your opinion but you are wrong if you think selfie sticks are bad . For now is some people have said it doesn't look like tripods monopods or other stuff like that are banned . My wife has a selfie stick that she uses for taking pictures in the house of stuff she creates to get different angles say a doll house and take a picture from a unique angle so I do not personally use a selfie stick or like them either . I do have monopods and tripod and my wife selfie stick the part that attaches to the cell phone can easily be attached to my mono pod or tripod so an easy way right now to circumvent would be to use a mono pod or tripod with the selfie stick attachment on it .
Finally I'm getting down to my major concern how many people on this board used to sell phones so to truly band selfie's and selfie sticks you either have to ban tripods and monopods which will be very quickly adapted or bad cell phones all together sell phones will not be allowed inside the park.

I have to agree with a few other people on here that what about the people taking pictures with iPads that does block the view and cause annoyances and what about people walk around the park bumping into you while they're texting I do not go to the parking frequent basis but I do go to malls in my area and I have been run into by kids and adults texting.

I guess my main opinion is slippery slope based on public opinion what will be Banamex what will happen will we not allowed to be brought in
Again I do think the park should ban selfie sticks on rods any and all rides it's dangerous you should be allowed to stand up on a ride stick your hands out of a ride it's stuff like that happens and you get caught it should be automatically ride should be stopping you should be escorted off the premises . Think the band of selfie six altogether in the park is kind of useless just because an individual is a responsible with the selfie stick and had somebody doesn't mean all selfie six should be banned . Again last time at the park and one time when I was at the beach on the West Coast I got hit from behind by a lady with the stroller now we see lots of strollers all the time but this one lady without the intention was talking about man into me so should we ban all baby strollers if enough people get annoyed/injured by them just giving you stuff to think about
And again hate selfie sticks

The article says "all US Disney parks"

Interesting. I just reread the article linked in the OP and the verbage about DLR is now struck through. I'll be watching to see if word comes over on the DLR board.

Nah...PhotoPass photogs will almost always take a picture with your own camera or phone in addition to the shot they get. It's not an issue really. Besides, whatever happened to the courtesy people offering to get a shot of a group so everybody can be in it? I do it for people all the time, and they usually offer to reciprocate.

I hope you're kidding. But I fear that might be the case.

There's really no need since I'm pretty sure nobody ever took a tripod out on a ride.

And without a tripod you can't do this.

Your photo is absolutely stunning, and it perfectly captures my Wishes experience: I am distracted from the glory of the fireworks by all of the bright screens.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Seems to me if they put up signs saying you'll be escorted out of the park for using selfie stick on rides and then they actually followed through with it, the problem would disappear quickly.

This from the DLR tab on the HUB about 2 minutes ago:

"Therefore, like many other venues, Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks and DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park will no longer permit selfie sticks* effective June 30. Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland theme parks also will be included in this policy change, effective July 1."

Thank you. :)

The reason I go to the trouble of taking photos like that is precisely to capture the experience so I can connect with it again later. So I appreciate you saying that.

I agree the screens can be distracting, but I have finally come to overlook them. Unfortunately it's much harder to overlook screens extended an additional 3 feet or so in the air so I am happy to hear about the selfie stick ban.

I took a ride on Splash last December with someone extending a selfie stick out of the log the entire time. I had my DSLR in my hands the whole time but can't believe I never took a photo of it. I was just too transfixed on that selfie stick, wondering at what point it was going to whack an animatronic figure or part of the landscape and knock off the phone. (OK, maybe I was hoping just a little. ;))

I think that would work. But it sounds like Disney prefers to deal with it this way. I imagine they'll have arguments, but they won't be as big as the ones they would have throwing people out of the parks.

Thank you! I'm very glad to hear that! Looks like they are updating the article linked in the OP as well.

Ugh, not soon enough for me. I'm headed to DLR tomorrow!

I just booked front row Disney on Ice tickets because of having to watch an iPad throughout the last $400.00 Disney event I went to. I prefer to sit further back.

That stinks. Did you try saying something to an usher?

It's hysterical that they mostly say no DSLRs at those events, but will let in an ipad. My DSLR has to be held up to my eye to use, unlike the ipad which usually causes all sorts of issues for people behind.

Highly doubtful since you can ask any photpass photog to take your pictures with your own camera.
