Selfie Stick bans

We just got back from a wonderful ten day vacation. I did see a few of these and frankly, I expected to be annoyed after hearing about all of the bans. But to be honest, people were respectful with them and they were a non-issue. The only time I saw a CM tell someone they were not allowed to use it was in the lazy river at Typhoon Lagoon. The girl politely said okay and exited the river with it at the next stop.

We were there in January and while I noticed people using selfie sticks I didn't find them to be intrusive at all. The people who just stopped to set up shots in main walkways so they can take pictures of their family/friends with something specific in the background...that was annoying!

I do agree they should be forbidden to use on rides...that's just an accident waiting to happen.

We're going on our first trip since the "selfie stick" craze has gone full throttle. I don't know that I mind them all that much ... although I do think they are rather silly ("narcisstick" - ) but don't expect that they will affect me one way or another (although if you hit me with one we will have to talk!).

There are a lot of things you could get annoyed with at WDW if you choose let them get to you ... but I would put Selfie sticks, DSLR cameras and I pads pretty far down the list. If you want to lug around that huge camera that's your business. I wouldn't want to but again that is your business. I wouldn't think the quality of the photographs taken with the Ipad would be worth the bother but again ...

I am looking forward to a great trip without annoyance ... and who knows ... I may just "photobomb" you and that selfie stick when you least expect it!

I should have limited my comment regarding banning selfie sticks to rides. I think they are actually pretty cool and have serious photographic uses beyond silly selfies. I love this photo and other "action" shots I have seen (not so much the vain traditional selfies). I was just struck by the CM saying they have had to stop rides so often because of selfie sticks. Imagine you are on your ONE ride on the 7DMT with your DD or DS that you reserved 60 days in advance, only to have it stop halfway through because of an inconsiderate selfie stick user. Or worse, imagine the very real safety risk that would result if the selfie stick and camera struck something a few seats ahead of you.

Yeah, we really need two threads here--one about inconsiderate users who infringe on other guests' enjoyment and safety, and one for those who just think all camera users and selfie takers are narcissistic and stupid. Cuz I'm pretty sure some USERS would "like" that first thread too. (And they could easily be banned on rides but not elsewhere--I'll keep that baby, but don't need that dirty bath water, KWIM?)

LOL, agreed!!! I have never actually seen one in use, but I can see where they would be useful. I have mildy contemplated one for my August trip. I do not take selfies, ever, but this will be our first mother daughter trip, and getting a few photos of us together, without dh or ds there to take the photo, sounds like a nice idea. I would never do it in the middle of a walkway, or infringe upon someone elses space though. In the end, I probably won't get one, because I carry as little as possible to the parks, but like this poster has said, there are really two arguments here.

They also said that further action concerning the sticks is not out of the question in the future.

I saw them everywhere at Universal but not on the rides. I'm hoping that Disney is banning them on the rides. It's a safety issue.

As to safety, there are some CHEAP sticks out there, I've been researching them for a monopod for a GoPro and if you get one of the $10-$20 jobs they are a ticking timebomb.

I still think Ipads (and android tablets) are the biggest annoyance in the parks.

It really bothers me how the monopod (now commonly known as "selfie stick") has become a synonym for narcissistic. We got one because it is the only way that we can have the whole family in the picture while at the same time having control of what is being photographed. How many times have you asked someone to take your picture only to realize they cut off something you wanted in it (like the top of the castle, for example)? With the monopod you can frame the picture however you want and have as many takes as you need without the need to bother others. Of course, as with any other tool, you must have common sense when using it (i.e. not use it while in a ride or in a way that will affect other people around you).

Like them or not, selfie sticks certainly are the perfect accessory for this particular era.

There's the key phrase - common sense. Unfortunately it's not as common as we'd probably all like it to be. Personally, I get the stick (as a way to put yourself in the picture with friends/family) but I'm not sure that I care for the angle of the shot that results from it. I'd rather pay for Memory Maker or take shots of just my kids. My last experience at Disney (January) we saw a few and maybe one or two cases of people not paying attention to their surroundings due to the stick, but they weren't really intrusive. Bottom line for me - as long as it doesn't intrude upon mine or my family's space or view, enjoy.

I'd much prefer someone using a selfie stick to the folks who pose on one side of a walkway while another stands on the opposite side with a camera and we pedestrians are expected to either wait for the shot or detour around.

That's the other thing: People need to learn to use it correctly. Keep a natural pose and do not extend your arm. If you use it correctly you shouldn't even see the stick in the picture.

I once sat behind someone who filmed ALL of Fantasmic. WHY?!? Seriously...who is watching these videos of shows and fireworks when they get home from Disney?

Pictures I get--the remind you of the people you were with, but the filming of entire shows with large contraptions it my pet peeve.

I felt similarly until recently. My dad broke out out old family movies from the early 80s (watching them on an old film projector) over Christmas. One of them had video from a Disneyland parade. It wasn't the whole parade, mostly because they just couldn't do that then..saving recording space for other things, but it was really fun to see what a Disneyland parade was like back then. It was so completely different than it is now. This was taken 2 years before I was born, so obviously I have no memory of it, neither does my brother. It was a fun trip back in time.

Watching these old movies is actually inspiring me to video more for our DD, and not just take pictures.
