Do you prefer to use the self checkout in grocery/drug stores if you don't need anything behind the counter or do you usually go to a cashier.

Sometimes I see long lines waiting for the cashiers & no one at the self checkout.

I don't like self checkouts.

If I am doing someone else's job I should get a discount.

I refuse to use self-checkouts unless I have no choice (my local grocery store only has the self-checkouts open early in the morning.)

Cashier, unless I absolutely have to use a self-checkout. I hate the self-checkout things - they're always freaking out when I try to bag my merchandise.

Anytime I can I will always choose self checkout. I love it, but then again I am a bit of a control freak in life:laughing:

I almost exclusively use self-checkout.

I would prefer the self-checkout by far, except that the biggest idiots in the store always seem to choose that option. I tried again last night, in fact, and got behind a lady who likely wouldn't be able to operate a toaster but was trying to scan her own groceries. :sad2: I watched the other lane, and that person couldn't figure out how to ring up apples. The third was broken, and the 4th was busy chatting on his cell phone. :headache: I gave up and went to the regular check-out.

I also prefer self-checkout. I can whip through it. I also have my own cotton grocery bags (saving my garage from being filled with hundreds of plastic sacks).

Okay, I had to laugh at this cuz I went to a self-checkout yesterday, scanned my store card and then realized I had never rung up produce on there before and had no idea how to ring up my apples!!! Luckily, a store employee took pity on me and helped me figure it out.

And to answer the OP's question, I like self-checkout, but very few stores have it where I live. Where I used to live, BJs had self-checkout and it was great!

Self check-out whenever possible (except maybe if I have a "ton" of groceries).

Eep! Sorry... Okay, I'll try not to be aggravated with the apple people... ;) I'll focus my angst on the idiots who are too busy talking on their cell to get out of my way. LOL

...or the idiots who totally ignore the item # restrictions and think they can bring 47 things to the self-checkout. I got stuck behind an employee once who did that; the people in line behind me were so worked up about it I'm surprised they didn't lynch her.

Self checkout whenever possible.

I don't view it as doing somebody's job - I view it as freedom from the awkwardness of interrupting the sullen checkout gal's conversation with the bagger.

I like the self-checkout better. For me, it is faster, and my groceries always get packed just the way I like them. I bring my own bags from home.

The only problem is sometimes getting behind somebody who doesn't seem to know how to use the self-checkout. I had one woman one day tell me that the scanner was "broken", and she left. I proceeded to check out and pay for my groceries.

Then, there was the really confused couple at a scanner at Walmart. I was two people behind them, and checked out an entire basket of purchases before they were finished futzing around at theirs, and, they never did finish by the time I left the store.:confused3 I guess you really do need to be at least marginally smarter than the machine.

At our local Walmart, unless I only have a few items, I try to use the cashiers. No matter how you bag the item, it never registers and the attendant is always having to reset the system.

My grocery store has an easy scan system. Basically as you shop you scan your groceries and bag them. Then at the end you go to the kiosk and it reads your scanner and completes the transaction. It saves me a lot of time and I can bag the items how I want. I also like that the scanner keeps a running total on it, which helps with budgeting. My biggest problem with the kiosk though is coupons. If I have a lot, I take them over to the attendant and let her scan them in.
