Recently, a few posters have deleted their initial posts in a thread and have requested that the entire thread be deleted.

Should we be given the option to do this?

On some other boards, it is impossible to edit your posts once you make them. On others, you are allowed to edit and/or delete your posts, until more than three replies are made.

What do you think is best?

I'm for no ability to delete but an ability to edit that expires after a short amount of time/small number of replies.

I do feel it is OK to delete posts.

There is one thread now that was apparently started as a joke. The poster is upset about this (rightfully so) and so she should have the option of deleting it. Other people have wanted posts deleted because they were embarrassed as to what was said/found out about them. They were (seemingly) caught in a lie and didn't want the information out there.

If you are going to let one person delete a thread, then everyone should have that option.

I think it's odd that so many have asked that, but I've only seen one actually done. I always just thought they locked them at the request of the OP, but didn't remove unless the post was against the guidelines.

Anyway, I like it fine that way, and editing whenever wanted. I needed to clarify one of mine that already had 2 pages of responses. If I hadn't done it in the OP, likely many people would have still misunderstood, even if I did it in a later post.

Also, sometimes folks come back and update in the OP so you don't have to wade through pages..........that's a nice option.

I would hate to see the editing option gone, for many reasons. I'm the type of person who is bothered when I make a spelling/grammar error and would like the option to fix it whenever I discover it. Plus, sometime I don't phrase things perfectly and like to edit for clarity. Finally, I'm human and sometimes I make ill-advised posts. I think it only helps keep the peace around here when people (myself included) can realize they posted rashly and go back and fix the situation.

What I don't like is the carte-blanche ability to have a mod lock a thread you started. I think that should only be allowed when a thread has obviously been hijacked. It always seemed to me like a petulent, childish act, like you're taking your toys and going home.

I agree. I hate the delete option because it makes people less accountable for what they type.

Agree, or what they let others do to their accounts, then blaming others.

If your spouse or OS, post on your account and they can get in, you may be spending too much time here or you need to be more careful. IF they can post here to insult or embarass you, why not do worse, if things real bad?

Also, I think many look for "attention getting" threads then when it goes haywire blame it on someone else. hhmmmm????

But even with the edit option if you QUOTE them their edit only applies to their post not whats in your quotes.

But it's just a board for info so whats the ig deal most have no idea about anyothers on here.

And the mods do a fairly good job at keeping it clean.

I really think it depends on the post. If it's out of hand then ya, I guess asking it to be locked is OK, especially if it had run its' course.

Asking to close it because it's not going the way you want (ie; people not backing and agreeing with you) then no, it shouldn't be locked.

I also think if you asked a thread to be locked and then you start the same thread back up then you are on your own!

As far as editing, I think the original post should not be able to be edited or deleted at all but any subsequent posts within the thread can. Does that make sense?

phorsenuf: 2 questions.

1.) What the HECK is THAT?!?!?

2.) Is that one of those granite/graphite sinks? We're thinking of getting one when we have our countertops redone. How do you like it?

Yes. Yes. (I have to have so many letters in this post before I can add it).

1.) That is a very unhappy wet kitty. It is not mine I saw the picture online and had to have it.

2.) Don't know anything about the sink. Sorry.

I think the way they do it here is fine. If you want to quote someone, you can, and that takes away their ability to change the message or to fix typos or whatever it is you are worried about.

And I LOVE getting updates in the original post. Don't have to go through the thread again.

Am a bit on the fence about the "Close my thread!" feature, but don't care much and will leave it to the DIS Gods.

Oh my goodness!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

I'm not sure I would live the night if I tried that on one of my cats! :lmao:

Looks like a kitty that was electrocuted and covered in plaster, if ya ask me (which you didn't, so I'll shut the heck up!) :)

Sad and ouch...... :confused3

I belong to another Disney board where it is an option to delete your own posts.

I like having the edit option. Sometimes I get a little slap happy on the submit button and post before I've reread it. I know it's hard to believe but sometimes I'll have a line in a post that just reads weird, is hard to understand, or has an error. I like being able to fix that.

As to asking a thread to be deleted--what the heck does it matter? If a thread takes off on a weird tangent, I can see doing that. I've found they often go away faster, though, if the OP doesn't constantly post on their own thread--"delete this, please, it's not going the way I had hoped." Then it seems to take on a life of its own.

Eh - I guess I don't really care much either way. I do like the ability to edit for spelling/grammar, but I don't usually edit for content. I have to agree with the others though, that I like when the OP updates the title and/or first post with updates so you don't have to scroll through the whole thread.

I have no problem with editing posts but do have a problem with deleting. Many times someone posts something inflamatory or down right stupid and then waits for people to respond. After people do respond they delete their original post. Anyone reading the thread after that is totally lost. They see the responses but they don't see what caused those responses.

I've seen it used in this manner and view it as a "bait and switch" type of thing.
