Segways banned @ Disney?

I think I just heard that on the news? When were they ever allowed? I never saw any while I was there...

I caught the very ending of this on the news today...I know they just started a Segway tour of World Showcase that sounded really neat...can anyone help?

They had some CM's on them at Epcot. I thought I saw a post recently about an early morning tour you could do on Segways at Epcot?

Interesting...I've riden a Segway and once you get the handle of it ...very easy to control....

Maybe it will be like snowboards...ski areas banned them for years until they became so popular that they couldn't ignore the population that was using them....

USA Today has a story about people that want to bring their Segways to WDW.

While I do believe that Segways are a great invention, especially for those with mobility problems. I think it is really too dangerous to be mixing with people who are traveling on foot in congested areas. An object that may weigh 300LB and goes 12MPH can cause a lot of damage, especially if it ran over a child.

I can just see it now. WDW overrun by Segways and scooters.

When we were at DisneyWorld January of 2003 we went over to the area where Segways were on display and being demonstrated.
They explained that it would be very difficult to run anyone over with a Segway and even demonstrated that for us....using a young boy for that demo! LOL

I'm not positive but I think the reason they've been banned for the time being is because Segways aren't YET considered or recommended as mobility aids for those who would otherwise be using a wheelchair.
I would expect that to change and that we'll be seeing Segways in use by guests at Disneyworld in the future.

One can hope anyway.

It seems to me that allowing them in WDW would be a nightmare, given the speeds that they reach.

I would agree with the speeds being an issue, but it's possible that they'll come up with some sort of mechanism to restrict the speed that you'll be required to use while in a setting such as DisneyWorld.

There are ways to figure it out and I'm sure someone at Segway is working on that right now.

By the way, have you seen the speed some of those electric wheelchairs/scooters can go? My friend has one and his goes 10-12 MPH.....not a lot different than the Segway, and HE can go to DisneyWorld with his "vehicle".

Disney has begun training Cast Members to teach guests at Epcot how to use the Segway. A new program will begin soon where guests may rent the Segway for two hours for $80.00. The first hour of the program will be entirely for instruction. The second hour will be a Cast Member guided tour around World Showcase on the Segway.

I was just at Epcot this weekend, and I saw 3 or 4 people (did not look like cast members) riding the Segways around 6:30-6:45 p.m. (my sister and I were running at full speed to get to Test Track and she noticed them and asked what they were). If they were banned, then that must have JUST happened.

I have ridden them too, while they are easy to control I think they would be dangerous in a real crowd.

I think another issue with them isnt them exactly... Where do you draw the line? You allow segways but what about electric/motorized scooters? Where would those fit in?

Personally I think the equation is bad enough with stroller and electric wheelchairs and the some of the people who cant manuver them (no not all the people) add more ankel bitters to the mix and ouch!
