Segway

I have not done it, but have read many good reviews. I would love to do it and didn't know about it until this year. We probably won't be back to WDW until next year. So if you take the tour, please post a review with lots of details about where you go, time of day, how many people, etc.

I got a tour for DH as a Fathre's Day gift this year. He said it was very cool. You're in a small group (7 I think?) and they show you how to use the Segway and then tour you all through the WS before it opens. He said there was not much behind-the-scenes info about EPCOT or the WS - but that it was great fun to be able to ride the Segway for almost 2 hours straight. At the end, you get a special pin.

BUT - after doing the EPCOT tour, he says the FW off-road Segway tour looks super-fun. I think he'd prefer the off-road one if he could only do one.

I did it last year with DS17. It was great:cool1: The original plan was for just him to do it, but at the last minute I decided to join him. It was a real blast. We went for the early morning tour and it was kind of neat because we toured World Showcase without crowds. I think this made it more enjoyable for me because I wasn't worried about taking out the random pedestrian and I think we got to 'cut loose' a little more than we may have during normal operating hours (but this is just conjecture since I haven't been on the tour during normal park hours). If you choose to go, remember to bring a camera, as they offer a neat photo op on the far side of the lagoon.

Enjoy,

DW and I have done it 4 times already and doing it again this October when we go down with some friends that haven't been on Segway before. It's a great time for all. A side thing I like is walking through World Showcase to get to guest relations before the park opens and seeing nobody else around.

My DD age 16 and I did the tour last August and the tour was great fun. We did the 9:30 tour that allowed us to get fast passes for soaring before our tour started that we used after our tour was complated!

We did the Around the World on a Segway tour in November. It was great, and we would love to do it again! The first hour was spent learning how to manuever the Segway (inside of Innoventions)...around cones, up and down a small ramp, below a bar(representing a tree that you may enounter in the World Showcase). The guides were very helpful (and patient lol). After we mastered the obstacle course, we headed over to World Showcase where we stopped in many of the countries, and the guides told us stories about each one.

We took the early tour, and the WS wasn't open to the public yet, which was even better.

There is a shorter tour(1 hour) that is only the inside portion. I highly recommend it, and look forward to being able to take the off-road tour at FW one day!

We're booked for the Segway Tour on Aug 28:cool1: I have a question about riding... Do you have to keep your feet rigid or still to control the Segway or is your posture and stance more natural?

Any specifics would be welcomed

You keep your feet in one place on the pad. To go forward or reverse you push forward on the bar or pull back on it, you can also tilt your body in the same direction if you want. To go right or left you tilt the handle on that direction, the older Segway's that they don't use anymore had a control on one of the handles that you used for direction.

DH and I took the tour last year during the Food & Wine Fest. We took the earliest tour, before Epcot opened, and it was really fun to see people setting up and getting ready for the Festival!

DH and I are both 50ish and had absolutely no problems with the Segways. Pay close attention during the first hour and make sure you follow directions carefully. The CMs are watching you to make sure you are in good control of the Segway.

The CMs told us there is usually one person per group who has a little extra trouble on the Segway. Sure enough, there was one person in our class who had some problems with control. The CMs just made sure there was always a CM near him.

The tour was BIG FUN and well worth the price. We hope to take the off-road tour soon, but I have to say that Epcot is our favorite park, and I can't imagine an off-road experience being better than touring Epcot beofre it opens! :cloud9:

You are standing upright with knees pretty straight the entire time. I wouldn't call the stance "rigid" since you do lean a bit, but you are not moving your feet or bending your knees.

It's not meant as a behind-the-scenes tour. The emphasis is on the riding of the Segways. The behind-the-scenes tour is UnDISCOVERed Future World.

DH and I did the Around the World on a Segway tour on two different trips in 2005 and we LOVED it. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to be in World Showcase before it opened.

Next year both of our DSs will be old enough for this tour, so the four of us will do it together. Can't wait!! :sunny:

Do it!!! I am so glad we did!!! My mother-in-law and I did the segway tour in June, and it was amazing. The best part was, it was just us!!!! We did the 7:30 tour, and it was just the two of us, and our guide. After our inside training, we went through the WS, and learned all kinds of neat stuff. Once you get the feel of it, you almost don't even need to think about it. And although your feet are stationary, if you stay relaxed, your ankles won't hurt. If you stay real rigid, you'll notice some discomfort. The first picture is of an empty Epcot!!! The 2nd is of us at the break/picture point.

That looks like so much fun! Maybe I should check into it too. I'm such a clutz, I was worried I'd kill someone :)

There is also a new Segway tour at Fort Wilderness that takes place along some of the paths there

Thanks for all the information everyone. I have a question - I don't have great balance - I have never been able to ride a bicycle, water or snow ski, ice or roller skate -:confused3 - I tend to fall over a lot!!:lmao:
Is balancing OK on the Segways? I would hate to be the one falling off all the time! I can stand upright (:rotfl: ), so that isn't a problem, just when I have to balance on something!!
Thanks for your help.

Heather, you definitely need to have decent balance to ride a Segway--I'd say it's akin to riding a bike, balance-wise.

I was so worried about this too! I couldn't ride a bike if my life depended on it (or roller skate, snow ski and the other things you mentioned)! We did this in December and I LOVED IT (see my review in my trip report link if you want). We are doing it again this December and I can't wait because I'll be a lot less nervous doing it the second time. I thought the hardest part was getting off and on but once I was on it was a breeze!

Also I found to help with my feet getting sore I would lift my heels up and kind of simulate walking but keeping the balls of my feet on the Segway pad at all times. This helped a lot when my feet started getting tired of standing stilll in one place.
