I am looking for a good backpack with cushioned straps. My kids walk 1.5 mi. to school with heavy books so I'd like something sturdy and comfortable. I can't seem to find any great deals right now. DD liked a Swiss Gear backpack we saw at Staples a while back, but I am watching for a sale. I need one for DS as well. They don't care about the brand, just want comfort.

TIA, sorry if this has been recently discussed. I didn't see a recent thread.

Jansport is a great backpack. And - can be had for a decent price at Kohl's if you have a coupon. (DD just got hers last week - I think we ultimately spent $30.) Her last one lasted 6 - yes - 6 years.

If finally got some small holes in the bottom - so it was hard to say "no".

I think this was the first backpack that we got for DD before school started. Otherwise - packpacks go on clearance at the end of September, beginning of October. (This year - DD is in college - and didn't want to "send" it to her.)Otherwise - we would have waited until October.

ETA - Jansport has a great warranty on their packs!

I agree with Lands End. However I ordered my three kids from Zappos. They were over $70 each, but will last forever. I was buying a new one each year because the cheaper ones were barely making it through the year.

I got my daughter a Jansport at TJ Maxx for $16.99 last weekend. My oldest had his Jansport from 9th grade through graduation. They are great backpacks. I use one for my nursing classes-of course I didn't get mine on sale when I got it.

we got my daughter a backpack from walmart paid less then 20.00 because i know my DD is going to carry more books this year . she liked it and it is big and comfortable grant it it is a no name brand but it looked cool:cool1: .
there is also a store by me called five below and i saw they had some nice backpacks for 5.oo here is the link

good luck i always hate trying to find something that is close to what they like with a good deal attched

Jansport has very durable bags and are guaranteed for life!! I have friends who have gotten new bags free ever 7 or 8 years from the one they bought when we started college.

Hi, Swiss Gear does make great backpacks! I saw 2 sizes at Sam's Club yesterday. A medium size at $20. and a large one for $40. Joan

Ebags has some great deals on Jansport. I was looking at them yesterday for DS22 for college.

My girls walk to/from school on a daily basis though only 1/2 mile. On the way home the last part is up a steep hill. My oldest has mild scoliosis. The girls use llbean backpacks and have never complained. One thing I also try to do is see if I can pick up a cheap copy of the heavy text books to keep at home. My oldest is going into 7th grade next week. Last year I found her identical math book for 99cents plus probably $3.99 for shipping so for $5 she didn't have to carry her math book to/from school each day.

I think they will be 50% off at Office Depot next week.

Thanks everyone for all your input and suggestions. It's greatly appreciated!:goodvibes

We ended up ordering DS's from Amazon. I watched it for a few weeks online since the price fluctuated while we looked in the store, but he wanted such an apparently unique item that I never found it, nor could his grandparents in Phoenix, so when the price dropped I ordered.

Just in case anyone is still looking for backpacks, Staples has them 50% off this week. Glad I waited, was able to pick up the Swissgear packs for both kids. They still had a decent selection.

I never knew Jansport backpacks were guaranteed for life!

Although, I guess I wouldn't need to know... since I am STILL using the Jansport I bought out in San Francisco when I was on vacation in 1996... yes 16 years later! LOL It's just a small backpack that I use as a purse but it's held up through many vacations as well as daily use.

I also saw the Lands End backpacks were 25% off today so it might be worth looking. They guarantee for the life of the backpack as well. My neighbours son had a problem with his (from dragging it) and the replaces it no questions asked and let her pick out a new colour and style. I was impressed.:)

If you have a Marshalls or TJ maxx nearby, check them out. They always have good deals.
