DB and I are planning to go to disney world in late Aug and wanted to stop by Universal for two or three days. Since Universal hotels seem be 200+ a night, its a bit beyond our budget. I was looking though some of the offsite hotels and it seems like the decent ones are around 50. Since while in Disney we will be taking advantage of the free dining plan maybe I should just stay at one of the value resorts at disney which would be $30 more? Since then we would get free meals as well? We are going to rent a car to get to universal from whichever offsite hotel we settle. I have never been to universal so I have no idea what the commute would like or if its even worthwhile. I would greatly appreciate any opinion. Thanks!

The rates may be in the low 100's by then for annual pass rate. I wouldn't book anything yet but just keep your eyes open. End of August is usually the beginning of slow season.

The commute between WDW and USO is only around 15-20 min depending on how fast/slow you drive. As far as food is concerned, your meal plan sounds like it is a good idea, but while you are over at USO or IOA you can check out Citywalk. There are a variety of resturants for fast snacks and full meals available, nothing too crazy price-wise (unless you go to Emeril's where dinner could set you back 150-200 dollars for two) Also, check with the person who booked WDW for you (if you used an agent) they could probably set up a hotel / ticket package for you for 2-3 days. When you do go, even though you are not staying thee, check out the royal pacific resort and the portofino hotel, they are beautiful resorts, and guarntee, you'll want to stay at one when you return to Orlando!
