We had planned to do the character dining that had Mickey, but I think we are going to do the Plaza character dinning instead as the location is better for us. However it was my sure fire way to see mickey. We are going during the week between Christmas and New Years so crazy crowds. How hard is it going to be to see Mickey in the parks? Should we stick with the Mickey breakfast? Mickey is a must for my son.

If it were a must do for me, I would be at Mickey's House in Toon Town as soon as it opens...typically 1 hour after park opening. You should be able to walk through and meet Mickey fairly quickly. When we arrived he was standing at the front door greeting and taking pictures and there was no one in line. As it gets later in the day, he'll be in the back behind a couple of different doors. :-) but the wait can get pretty long. Toon Town is great first thing in the morning! there are lots on great photo spots with hardly anyone around. We also saw Pluto roaming around with no one to play with. Kids had fun with him.
ps...If your kiddo wants to do Gadget's Go Coaster...this is by far the best time!!

Mickey meets in several places in the parks (his House in Toontown, in Town Square, on BVS). I agree, if you head to Toontown right at opening, it shouldn't be to bad a wait. Otherwise, check the character schedules in the Disneyland App or as a character greeter CM and they should be able to tell you when Mickey is next scheduled to appear in Town Square or BVS. As long as you're willing to wait in a line, I think there will be plenty of chances to meet Mickey in either park.

I think Mickey is still a regular over at Surf's Up (breakfast) at Paradise Pier; that's the only location where he's pretty much always there.

Definitely meet him at his house in Toontown like another poster mentioned. Toontown opens one hour after the park opens. Arrive a few minutes early and some characters usually come out to open the gates and lead the kids into Toontown. Walk directly to Mickey's and your wait should be minimal.

Mickey isn't too hard to find. The location I would choose would depend on what I wanted him to be wearing.

First thing in Toontown he'll be in his traditional suit. Later in the day there, he'll be traditional, Sorcerer, Band Leader or Steamboat Willie.

Holiday Season he'll likely be in a Christmas outfit in Town Square. If you want to meet him there, watch the app for times he is coming out then watch the doors over by the hat shop and follow him to where he's going to stop for photos.

BVS he'll be in his director's outfit.
