security of 2BR units with little ones?

I'm thinking of using developer pts. to book a trip this summer. We are a family of 5 but the youngest is only 3. At SSR, the 1BR are technically for 4 but I was told that MS will allow us to book with 5 people. (I know I would have to bring bedding). For part of the trip, DH will not be along with us.

Here's my concern....If I'm in the Master, I'm concerned about not hearing everything in the 2BR portion. I'd be happy to use the pts. for a 2BR and would appreciate the extra space. I'm concerned that there is a balcony and separate outside/hallway door over on the 2BR side of the unit. Not that I expect a break in, or the little one to "escape", but those doors over in that section of the unit worry me. They are two rooms over from the area I will be sleeping in. Basically, I don't want the kids sleeping in a room w/o an adult with separate exits/entrances. Anyone else run into this concern??

Can you book and secure a reservation for the dedicateds? I ask b/c the Dream book says "most 2BR accomodations consist of a one-bedroom and studio combination".

Also, are there "top" locks on the sliding doors?

We had the 1 bdrm/studio combo for a 2 bedroom in Nov at SSR and I was worried as well. My kids are 7 and 4.5 and they know not to mess w/the patio door. Also, since they were in the studio part, we had the couch made into a bed, therefore the pillows off...we stacked the pillows in front of their balcony door. Then we moved an ottoman that was in the room, in front of the exit door to the hallway. It worked fine...they were both so tired from being in disney, they barely moved.

When booking our 2BR in the past we have always been able to secure a Ded 2Br after stating the ages of our young children. Now, when booking at BCV, our home resort, it was at the 11 month window but while speaking to the CM at MS about my concerns about the 2nd door if we ended up in a lock-off he told me that they do everything possible to get families with young children in to a dedicated 2BR.

As for hearing the kids in the other bedroom, it has never been a problem for us. We close their bedroom door while we are in the family room but once we head to bed we open their door and leave ours open -- we also leave the light on over the stove so that they can see if they get up in the middle of the night to find us. I would also recommend packing a nightlight for the 2nd bedroom as it can get really dark in there with the door closed.

Yes, you can request a dedicated 2 bedroom. We joined when our youngest was 4 so that was very important to us also.

The room door has a bottom lock and then the top latch... like most regular hotel doors have.

We have stayed in a Dedicated 2 bedroom every trip.... at VWL, OKW, SSR and this summer Vero Beach.

As others have said, just get a dedicated 2BR and you will only have the one entrance door. The sliding doors to the balconies have the standard lock in the door handle and a lock higher up specifically out of reach of small children.

You can always take a baby monitor and use it to keep tabs on the kids in the 2nd bedroom.

We are putting off our whole family BWV trip until we feel secure that the DGC are going to stay put, and that they fully understand about being in a hotel, since BWV doesn't have dedicated 2 bedrooms. I think we'll be ready in July '10...I hope so, it's BWV points that I've been hoarding for that trip! We've been in Dedicated 2 bedrooms, mostly at VWL, but also BCV, with them. I've also always been able to get a Dedicated one at the time I made the reservation.
