We bought my dd one of the Nemo hats in Epcot two weeks ago. Then had it sent to our resort. Well, we neve checked it out thoroughly, before packing it to go home. When we got home, lo and behold they had left that huge magnetic security thingie on it!!! Any ideas on how I can remove it, without damaging the hat? I'm sure not lugging it all the way back to Epcot in November. Besides, I don't have the slip anymore. Help!!

Do you have a Disney Store by you? If you do take it there, but they do need your sales slip in order for them to remove it.

Other stores can sometimes remove them, too, if they have the same equipment, but most won't do it if you don't have a receipt.

It should be possible to saw through the pin with a hacksaw; cut a piece of thin plastic with a slit to go around the pin and protect the fabric first. Don't try to pry it off, some of those security tags are ink-filled, and it could leak if you broke it.

Call disney merchandising. I think you could sent it back to them, and they'll remove the tag and ship it back to you.

If it is not one of the ink types of security devices, get two sets of vice grips, grab on to each piece and pull really hard.

I came home with a t-shirt from UOA and it had the ink type on it. DH got the vice grips and had it off within seconds.

If you don't want to risk it, I like the sawing through the pin solution.

I got a Belle costume at the Disney Store (hours from my house) and the security device was left on. I took it in to our local BonTon--small department store where I shop a lot--explained the situation and she got it off for me, even though the device didn't match theirs. If you have a small dept store with a customer service area, I think they would be sympathetic--and value your patronage enough to help out. It ought to be quite clear that this isn't the kind of story one would make up

J C Penneys removes the ink filled ones. A friend bought an expensive sweater in Norway and came home with the ink filled surprise. WDW Merchandise sent us to Penney's.

We came home with the silly thing on DD's jacket last year. I called merchandising and they told me that the Disney Store could not do it and I would have to mail it back to them. I would be reimbursed for the shipping charge.
This year, I will be checking every thing buy before we leave.

If it's ink, you can throw the item in the freezer and then the ink will freeze and you can pry it apart. :)

I did stop at the Disney Store in my area. The manager told me I had two options....go to another store to try to have it removed. They don't have one. Or, I could return it to them and they would give me a credit. But, oops, no they couldn't since I don't have the slip. Looks like we'll just leave it be. We bought it as a decoration to begin with. Guess I'll be checking more carefully in the future!! Thanks for the thoughts.

I bought a swim suit with one left on--fearing it was an ink tag (it wasn't) ... I went to a mall near my in-laws house and ran frantically to Sears (not the right tag) and I think I finally removed it at Burdines--but the security office had to do it and they had several different gadgets to try--the 2nd one worked like a charm. He didn't care about a receipt as it was obvious the swimsuit was not "stolen" from their store.

We had bought a tote bag at WDW and when we got home to NC the security tag was still on it. And can you believe it I had every receipt except that one. The Disney store in our area doesn't use security tags but suggested that I go to JCPenney but I'd need the receipt. Well my husband wrapped the tag up in two zip lock bags (it was the ink kind) and hit it real hard with a hammer and it came right off and no ink was spilled.

Who knew that there were this many criminals on the DIS!!! Kidding!!! Some of these are pretty clever.

I work in a Disney Store and we do not have the correct machine to take off the security tags that WDW uses. If you have the receipt you can return the item.

This happened to a purse that my daughter bought in Epcot. She had it with her in class (high school) one of the other students had a cast and cracked it open with his cast. ( not recommend)

goofy4tink,

I work in retail and this happens sometimes with my new associates who forget to remove the tag. I will tell you that the customer is ALWAYS right.
1.It isn't your fault to begin with that the tag was left on.
2. I would talk to Disney again and explain how FRUSTRATING it is for you to have this happen. Knowing Disney I am really put off that they couldn't help you because you didn't have the receipt. If I ever said no because someone didn't have their reciept, I would hear it from my District Manager.
3. I don't reccomend taking it off yourself. It isn't worth it if it is ruined, plus it could leave a hole. I also know that some sensors (there are many types of ink tags/sensors) will cause a huge hole to form, and if you try and melt the sensor, it burns a hole in the fabric.

Like I said, I would be persistant and expalin your situation to whomever you need to. Go as far up as possible. Keep trying. It wasn't your fault that you don't have your receipt because you automatically believed the sensor was off and your item could be used.

Good luck. Any more questions you have, I would be happy to answer. I know a great deal about loss prevention and the devices used to deter theft :)

I had the same thing happen to me in April. The CM left the security tag on a tote bad I had bought. I didn't notice until we were home. I called Disney and was told I would have to ship it down there and only by UPS. They would not accept any other delivery and I would have to pay for shipping and they would remiburse me once they received the bag in 6-8 weeks, which is ridiculous. I didn't leave the tag on---they did.

Our Disney store doesn't use security tags anything like that so I went to another department store's customer service. They were very nice to me and got a member of the security team, who wrapped the device in paper towels and took some sharp pliers and cut it right off.

MUCH EASIER than sending back. I too, will be checking all purchases BEFORE leaving Disney now.

This happened to me 2 years ago with an 80.00 jacket..... When I got home I couldn't wait to wear it well guess what it had the security tag on it... I called Disney and they explained to that WDW is the only place they have that particular type of tag and that I would have to send it back by UPS... I did adn Disney paid me back and they also had it shipped back to me within the week. I just would not want to risk ruining the item.
