This will be my first time going into parks with a scooter. Is there a special line or do we queue with others. Do you go through the machine with your scooter or how does it work? Also, I'm thinking of just putting my bag in the basket. I am able to walk but I don't know if they do anything you do differently if you can walk or if you are not ambulatory?

You do not go through the new scanners with ECVs, wheelchairs, or strollers. They will direct you where to go when you get to each individual entrance. There are cast members out there watching for people with these items and directing traffic. Have a fun trip.

We went to the OC fair and they used the same new scanners and had strollers and ECVs go through them without an issue unless someone had something they weren't supposed to. So I still don't understand what they can't at Disney.

There are specific lanes for ECVs and strollers, so you basically ride up and if you can, walk through the scanner while they check your scooter. Then if your purse/bag alerts, they'll just have you go to a table for a quick check on it. The lines are usually empty for the scooters, so I got through faster LOL

ok thanks for that. We will look for the dedicated lines. I’m sure they go a little slower than other lanes though.

Maybe I should rephrase. You do not go through the same scanners as those walking do. They will direct you where to go.

Right, but what I am saying is at the OC fair, you went through the same scanners as everyone else and it worked fine, so I don't understand why Disney can't do the same thing.

They *could*, but I am guessing that they choose not to, for... reasons.

Disney is a unique security challenge, and they balance some pretty tough goals (making sure that everyone is unarmed, and without any contraband) with keeping the Magic as intact as possible.

Disney World, and MK in particular, and the Castle if you want to get really granular are all very big, high value targets for folks with an agenda. Literally for almost 50 years Disney has done a fantastic job with security; if they do things differently than anyone else, I'm guessing there's a valid reason why.

This past week the scooter/stroller line took much longer than just walking through.

That's fair enough, though IME no one checks wheelchairs very thoroughly. I wouldn't mind if they did, but at least last year they didn't. (Nor do people at other large gatherings, airports, etc. The only time they did was once going back through MCO to fly home when I'd accidentally left like 4 bottles of pop/water in the bottom bag from the previous day! :rolleyes1 )

I assume they send scooters, strollers and wheelchairs through a designated line by design. The reason regular lines are quicker now is because they no longer have to wait for the special checking needed for strollers and other assistive devices…. something I think many of your fellow park goers really appreciate!

I honestly have never waited an unreasonable amount of time in the special security line and the benefit is the officers all know exactly what the drill is and what they are looking for.

From my vantage point, not having them go through the scanners seems to be the bigger risk, as there area many places one could hide something on an ECV that wouldn't get inspected. Going through the scanners would reveal anything anywhere.

But with the new scanners, it still wouldn't affect wait.times, as they would just roll straight on through.

This will be our first trip with a wheelchair, so I'm trying to wrap my head around everything including security. We used to have some of our party walk through the no bags line and a designated pack mule take the bag through bag check. We haven't been since this changed.
Are we better sticking all together wherever the wheelchair folks go, or should someone push the wheelchair member of our party to the wheelchair line while others do the regular line? If we split up, is the bag best with the wheelchair or without the wheelchair? (We take turns carrying one family bag - it's what works for us)
Related question, do we need a showercurtain or poncho to cover the chair when not in it or are all transfer from chair to ride areas protected from weather? TIA for any advice to us newbies.

Split up and have the walkers take the bag. The less they have to go through in the wheelchair line, the faster it goes. It is always best to have something to cover your chair when it rains. Have a fun trip.

My husband, daughter and I were at WDW in June 2021, using the new security process.
The line for strollers, wheelchairs and ECVs is well marked.
They ask one person to go with the wheelchair to push it to the area next to the scanners that the CM directs you to. If the person can propel their own wheelchair or is using an ECV, they would go alone. If the person is able to walk thru the scanner, they are directed to walk thru the scanner.
Bags are carried thru the scanner. If you have more than one bag, it works best to have one in each hand/on each shoulder.
After you go thru the scanner, you can return to the wheelchair or ECV, which will be parked neat to the scanner.

See above.
For ambulatory guests, you will remove your bag from the scooter and carry it with you thru the scanner.
My daughter is not able to walk. The CMs had me remove her backpack from her wheelchair and carry it thru the scanner with me. The CM checked under her wheelchair to make sure nothing there and I pushed her wheelchair again after going thru the scanner.

Wow thank you for the clear details. We are both able to walk so I will assume we get off the scooter, go through with our possessions then get back on the scooter. Appreciate the feedback!

Exactly

They had a "sniffer dog" at all of the parks last week, and I watched security check every wheelchair and scooter, after having all the bags taken off. I spent a lot of time standing by waiting for one of our group who used a knee scooter. They checked everything.
