Securing valuables while at park?

Just thought I'd inquire here about this and if it would even be an issue...

While your family is in the park or rather just away from your resort room for the day, where do you keep things such as
laptop
extra camera pieces
game system
ipod
DVD player
etc
We are bringing quite a few of these things with us and although we are driving down, I don't want to have to take all these items to my van every day to lock up until we return from the parks.
Should I be concerned with our items? Is there a concern with who has access to our room while we are not there?
TIA

I've never locked anything up, why would you if you're in a DVC, there's no daily service. :confused3

Like Uncle Remus, we have never taken the time to secure any of our valuables. We never leave money laying around, but our laptop typically sits right on a table. It would be unusual for a cast member to enter your room unless it is a trash or towel day. But still, I imagine better safe than sorry.

We lock small items (money, wallets, park passes (if we aren't using them), etc. in the safe. All other items (XBox, laptop, iPods, etc.) stay in the room.

I'm sure you know this, but be careful leaving electronics in the hot FL sun. Many are heat sensitive, and will ruin if left in your car. This is especially true for a laptop or a GPS. :goodvibes

Thx- I actually figured and hadn't thought about it at all until reading a few post that they had missing items after returning from a park (many did not blame mousekeeping BTW) I figured w/ us being DVC it really shouldn't be an issue. & Quite frankly at regular hotels where there is daily service we have never had a problem either- I guess I just needed reassurance.
We never leave money laying around other than pocket change and always leave electronics hooked up as they were when we used them etc- I had never given a thought to it until those posts- I appreciate it to everyone!

Because folks can still come in the room?:rotfl2: Maintenace has come in my room. The housekeeping staff still has keys and I am NOT convinced that Disney "secures" those "master keys' (IN other words if Becky Jo loses her masterkey do they "turn it off" her key?) And don't forget a MANAGER at WL was arrested for THEFT!

Seriously there have been reports of thefts from DVC room. And contrary to the 'Myth' not all thefts are by housekeeping:lmao:

So if you like your stuff... Secure it.

My small stuff goes in the safe. My laptop is secured using a cable lock.

And by the way, when it disappears... Disney's response will be "SO" No they won't reimburse you, they won't even apologize. They are NOT admitting liablity for stuff you might not even have had and would now like them to pay for!

The only place I've ever had things stolen from was locked cars - I'd take my chances with the room before that. I lock my laptop and whatever else I can fit in the safe and place other valuables out of site.

Last time we were at SSR I was sitting on the patio, DH was in the shower. I was facing and looking at the golf course I hear the door and turn around expecting to see DH. Instead it's 2 men they were there to replace the table and chairs on the patio. Because there is no daily maid service doesn't mean someone will not be in your room.

We put whatever valuables that will fit into the safe and I too use a cable lock for my laptop.

We had Disney book other people into our room the first night of our trip in Oct. They had key cards and walked in. It was 11:00 at night, but whose to say it couldn't happen while you're at the park and they could help themselves to your stuff. I lock small stuff in the safe and try to put big stuff out of site.

I put my valuables in the safe. Things which won't fit go into my suitcase. Safer than leaving them out.

Even if you do secure your valuables, what ever they might be, do you not have insurance on some of these items? At least the bigger and more expensive ones. If so, and they are stolen or disappear, they should be covered when you get home. Also, I agree on leaving the electronics in the car. The heat can ruin them.

Sorry but I have never understood why people sit in their room without the security lock on. There are many reasons for maint. or housekeeping to enter your room. You should put your valubles in the safe or at least out of sight. If precautions are not taken to safegaurd items don't complain when they are stolen.

If I look at what we take with us on vacation:

Notebook
Camera
DSLR Camera
Extra Lens

The only item that would normally stay back is the Notebook, which easily fits into just about any safe.

For our 2010 Family Vacation, we'll probably bring our Wii for the kids, but that too easily will fit in the safe with the notebook.

Otherwise, the room has a DVD player and everything is insured.

which safe are you fitting your notebook computers in?
I've never been able to get them to fit in the room safes?

Thanks

We put our two laptops and other valuable items too big for the safe back in our empty suitcases and lock that. Am aware that suitcase locks are not super strong but will ward off the casual thief...

My homeowners deductible is $500, my laptop didn't cost much more than that. I bought a $30 cable lock years ago and have used it many times.

Be aware of your medicine. We had some of my sons asthma medicine disappear while we awere at the parks one day. I turned the room upside down looking for it. I was not convinced anyone woould have taken it. Since it was at the start of our trip, I hoped we just left it at home. To my dismay, it was not home. I would never think to lock up medicine, but now I will.

I also believe in using a Laptop Lock cable. I lock the key in the safe, and take the safe key with me.

While it won't stop any one that wants to take your laptop, it does remove the opportunity to quickly slip it into a bag and walk out with it. A lot of thefts are thefts of opportunity (someone sees a chance to grab something and they do.)

I also use the safe for things like travel documents, ipod, and cash, etc. Stuff that I could get home without, but it wouldn't make me happy.

One big complaint I have about a lot of hotel rooms (not just at Disney) is the utter lack of places to secure a laptop. I can't tell you how many times my laptop has been tied to drain pipe in the bathroom.

Camera gear is the hardest one. I have a hard sided, locking case (Pelican) for my camera, and I have a bike cable which I pretty much lock to what ever I lock my laptop to.
