Second Jobs - Which are "best"?

We have a lot of "spare" income makers in our house.

For 2 years my husband did 3 paper routes but leaving at 2am and getting back at 6 to get ready for work and then working all day took a toll on him and our family so this Jan we quit this.

I plan social events for the youth at our church for $100.00 a month.

But the 2 things that have surprisingly brought in fabulous money are:

1. Flipping kids stuff/cloths. I am thrift store junkie and love to shop clearance. So I buy and then sell at local kids consignment sales.

2. My husband advertised his computer skills on Craigslist. You would be shocked at how many people just need help setting up a new computer or internet.

Can you write resumes? advertise you will meet someone at a coffee shop for 1 hour for $$$ and write their resume. My friend does this and makes a TON she charges $50.00 and can't keep up with her requests.

I am pretty sure I have the best 2nd (3rd?) job ever. In addition to working full time (ok pay) and taking care of my two young daughters (horrible pay, great benefits), I write young adult novels (ok pay).

I usually end up writing, marketing, and answering fan mail and stuff during all the free time I get when the kids are asleep, but it's a NICE, FUN job that I love to do, so I don't mind that it eats all my down-time!

Of course, you have to love to write, and be sorta good at it, but I definitely recommend it!

Coolest Job Ever!!!!! Can you give me any insight on how to start in this field?

My "real" job is as an elementary school teacher. I also teach an evening course at a local college one night a week. I've also just become a consultant for Scentsy. My goal is to host two parties per month, so that doesn't take up too much extra time.

Sure! It's not an overnight thing, but few things that are worth it ever are. One of my hobbies is helping other aspiring writers get started in the field. I don't want to hijack this thread, so anyone who is interested can PM me and I would be happy to give you my Getting A Novel Published 101 lesson :)

I work full time 8-4 M-T, 8:30 -12 Friday at my 'real' job and then an hour or so most mornings at an entertainment store stocking magazines. I've been there 10 years and used to be full time..at one time I was music manager and another book manager. Pay is pretty low..under $10 an hour, and we used to get amazing discounts and perks, but those are fading away. I put a good chunk of my income into the 401K there since my real job has pretty sucky 401K options. The rest I cash out and stick in my box for vacation cash and it really does help. I love it since I can come and go as I please (I'm really lucky..no one else there can do this..I worked into it), and I work before the store opens so it's a very peaceful time. I also Ebay some and really love treasure hunting at thrift stores and yard sales.

I babysit in the evenings to make some extra $. I usually request that the children are brought here so I can put them down for bed at a reasonable time until the parents arrive. It also allows me to have extra time with my own children while making $ and having their "friends" over. :lovestruc

Has anyone considered being a Disney TA for a second job?

It's been crossing my mind lately......:surfweb:

I have 3 jobs- one is a FT 9-5 job, one is PT teaching music lessons on Saturday mornings, and one is managing Social Media for musicians, which is kind of an all-day thing, 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, 7 days a week.

I just started a second job. I am a perfume model. It is a sweet job. $15 an hour and 10% commission. All I do is ask people to smell my perfume and show them the perfume sets that we have. I set my own hours and fax in my time sheet each week. So far it is great!

I've worked a second p/t retail job for years. My background is in retail marketing, so I do love the "rag business" :). Before I had my kids and got into the education field I was a jewelry buyer for a regional department store. I know work p/t in the jewelry dept. of a national retailer. The company treats me well, is flexible with my schedule, and since I've been there for over 18 years, the pay is pretty good for retail. I also get a 25% employee discount :).
The downsides are that now that I'm getting older it is getting harder and harder to work so many hours during the school year. I work one week night, an 8 hour shift on Saturdays, and either a 4 or 6 hour shift on Sundays. That means no day off unfortunately.

I have three jobs, but a great second job is tutoring! I work for a company, but you can also try to do it on your own. This job generally pays well and can be very rewarding! :goodvibes

Where do you apply to do this? It sounds like something right up my alley! :thumbsup2

I've been teaching people how to ski for about 3 years now. I do it on the weekends mostly, and all throughout the holiday season.

Wow, interesting second jobs. I'm thinking about picking one up myself to try and plow through my school loans, but can't decide what to pursue.

Anybody else with some input?

One of my teachers in high school had a second job. She lived in one town and taught in another. A couple of nights a week she hostessed at one of the nicer restaurants in the town she lived.

I have a friend here who tends bar at Buffalo Wild Wings as a second job. She told them she could only work weekends since she has to stay so late when they close. And if she just doesn't want to work because she's fried from her first job there is almost always someone willing to take the shift for her.
