Seat selections -- was I in the wrong?

Absolutely not. You were completely in the right. Since you were able to choose your seats, I assume she could choose hers too? As a PP stated, the family would have been split up anyway. That was very wrong of her to be mad. I am so sick of the entitlement issue some people have lately. I hope you were able to have a nice trip anyway.

My DH and I do the same thing. We select 2 aisle seats across from each other. I, also, am not interested in the middle seat - nor the window seat.

The only exception is if it is my family (like when 3 of us travel together) travel together.

I would have responded the same way as the poster did.

Great..now everyone knows about the chocolate stash!!!

well, apparently darlak's children don't know about it yet... And just because people know about it doesn't mean that they will have access to it :rolleyes1

I like the guy who came up to me in my prime aisle, 9C on a 757 which has about 6 feet of legroom, and said 'MOVE!' That really was going to get me out of my seat into an E- seat

We leave on Sat. and I just changed our seats to 2 aisle seats. I have Restless leg syndrome and I need to get up and walk. So my husband and I are across from each other.

Gotta say that at that point, English would not have been in my language base. I would have just sat there, expounding in one of your many languages!!

Yes, but the OP stated that the child entertained himself and the dad slept. My hunch was that the mom was peeved because the dad was able to sleep thanks to the child who didn't need entertaining, whereas she was not.

OP here. The dad slept off and on, but took care of his little boy when help was needed. Help with the video game, help getting drinks and snacks from the FA, etc. It wasn't like he was completely disengaged. (My original post wasn't clear on that, but I didn't want a dissertation for everyone to read.) They were two capable adults each with one child. Our carrier was Delta/NWA and I was able to select seats in advance. I didn't pay more to sit on the aisle, but perhaps I planned earlier that our row mates.

The whole chocolate and kittens thing has me thinking. Misplaced apostrophes are a pet peeve.

ITA, no wrong was done on your part. I actually think its a little funny. I never get to sit with my DH or half my kids on our flights....we are a family of 6 and are always split up, sometimes by a lot of rows and I would never ask anyone to move for us!

If kitten's die's when's youse plurali'se with apostrophe's, what's die's when's someone's mis-spell's 'Ohana? O'hana... 'Ohanas... O'hana's... Ohanas... 'O's'Ha'Na's'...

No no no, there are many suitable Bavarian insults - no other language required. :rolleyes1 The challenge is that if I am in an exit row sometimes I have to 'prove' my English language skills to the FA to keep my spot. As our esteemed moderator knows firsthand, my written and spoken English skills are not always up to par...

Rumor has it you can say 'chocolate' in 46 languages, though... so, yanno... you have THAT going for you...

;)

One time I had an aisle seat and there was a mother in the middle seat and her children were across the aisle. The person in the window across the aisle would not switch with the mother. I switched because I really did not want her leaning all over me the whole flight so she could yell at her children. It was a 3 hour flight and I was miserable in the middle. I dozed off at one point and woke up to see that the mother had put down my tray table to put her garbage all over it. I was so annoyed at that point. When I opened my eyes she moved the garbage off and put it back up. Who does that? She finally got tired of yelling at her daughters to "cut it out" and switched with one of them. The rest of the flight was more pleasant. Since then I have been very hesitant to switch seats with people.

Ah, the refined Southwest boarding procedure versus those "cattle car" airlines!

In case this has not been made clear to you or to any other poster, I take extreme exception with my posts being edited to reflect something which I did not state.

Editing the content and tone of posts is inappropriate and while there may be times when a moderator needs to remove quoted or offending information, this is not the case here, nor has it been in past.

I certainly would not have been so offensive in my post, and have quoted the original to clarify what I did indeed post.

Back when we flew Midwest, I booked a window seat where the aisle seat was open and then my DH was across the aisle in his seat. My goal when I booked it was *maybe* the seat wouldn't be filled and once the flight was cruising I could put DS in the seat. When we boarded I did have a person in the seat next to me. That was fine. I played the odds and it didn't work...but I wouldn't have asked her to give up her seat. So for the flight I sat by the window with my DS and my DH was across the aisle. No big deal. I wonder if the woman in your story was planning something like that...having the extra seat for room to move around. She was wrong in being upset that you wouldn't have moved out of your chosen seats though. You did nothing wrong...no sin committed in my book!!

I agree that you were right to keep the seats you chose.

I had a similar experience. I usually fly Northwest and purchase my ticket before the 90 day time when you can select your seat. I'm somewhat claustrophic and more at ease in an aisle seat. I was traveling alone and the person across from me was also. A family of five showed up for the two middle and two window seats. First the Mom said to me that they would be happy to give up their window seat if I would like to have it to look out and that way they wouldn't have to bother me when they traded off holding the baby. I don't know why I was apologetic because I certainly wasn't feeling that way but I said was sorry and stated my need to be in an aisle seat.
Then the Dad tried the same thing with the guy across the aisle. He skipped any explanation and went right to "No!"

In a conversation with her later in the flight, I found out that they got their seats in the last few days at less than half the price I paid. Then I felt even more comfortable with being able to refuse her "offer". The baby wasn't crying but fussy while she held him. What was interesting to me is that after she passed the little guy off to the Dad, he settled down and slept.

It frustrates me when someone puts you in a situation where you feel guilty saying no to something you shouldn't have been asked to do in the first place!
