Seat Belt in the ceiling of a minivan?

We traded in our Town & Country for a 2008 model. I now see that in the rear row there is a seat belt coming out of the ceiling. My kids think it is for the middle seat but I can't imagine a seat belt in the ceiling being safe. I need to call the dealer but thought someone here might have an idea what this is.

My GMC Acadia has the same thing. What's funny is that I didn't see it & I called the dealer after I got the car home to tell him the manufacturer forgot to put in a rear middle seat belt.

Yes, it's for the middle seat. It clicks into the one side of the passenger, then it goes across the waist. It's a little hard to describe, but try it out and you'll see.

The one thing I don't like is that first "click" cannot be released just by hand. I have to climb back there and use a key to push in a little release button in order to store the belt back in the ceiling when no one is using it. Otherwise, I see a belt in my rear view when driving.

To anyone that hasn't seen this type of belt, you must think I'm nuts!

Yes, we just got one and the middle seat belt is in the ceiling.

Kim I have an Acadia too so I know you are not nuts. It is a strange setup isn't it? OP just look in your car manual and it should have some pictures or directions for you.

My 07 Sienna minivan has it also. Take a look in that little book in your glove box....it will tell you all about it.

Thanks! So my 9yo was right when he said my SIL had the same belt in her Acadia. Now I'll have to check the book because I still can't see how it works!

Just ask him to show you how it works. That's how it usually goes at our house.


ETA: I swore I'd never be one of those parents who had to have her kids hook up things for her. Enter DH's big screen TV and the 10 million games/devices attached to it. I'm ashamed to say that a month ago I had to have my 11 year old put a DVD on for me. *sniff* I have become my mother!

That seatbelt is the reason why I had to trade in my Windstar for my Odyssey in 2003 - I was going to be the mother of 5, and I definately wanted shoulder belts for everyone!
