My ds 12 gets awful car sick, and I know that he will most likely get seasick. What are your recommendations for him. Doesn't dramamine cause drowsiness? I'd hate for him to be sleeping on his vacation. He is to young for the patch that my dh and I use. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :D

A lot of people swear by Bonine, patches or ginger. As for what is best for you, not really sure. We are going to take Bonine with us just as a backup although none of us has gotten sick on a "ship" before. - Mike

Try them before hand (in the car or on a boat some where) some of my children react differently to the different medicine, my one that gets car sick (alot) had no problem on the boat. If both you and your husband need medicine this maybe hard to do, but when we are on cruises we make the rocking into an adventure game so the kids start having fun when you are bouncing around and soon forget that it may make them sick (mind of matter - so to say)

Good luck

My DD3 gets car sick too, no problem on the ship. They didn't even know it was moving.

Salt and Vinegar potato chips! Worked brilliantly for morning sickness - and equally well for sea sickness! Anddoesnt make you sleepy! :Pinkbounc Nat

I don't want to take any chances so I gave my kids 1/2 of a chewable Bonine, per instruction of my pediatrition, this weekend to see how they'd react. I didn't notice any difference and they sure didn't go to bed early...as a matter of fact they wanted to stay up later than usual. I plan on taking it as well since I am prone to motion sickness. I'd rather be safe than sorry so we're all taking it before we fly out of boston.

Dramamine Less Drowsy Tablets and Bonine Tablets are medically the same. Both are 25 mg/tablet of meclizine hydrochloride. Motion sickness medications with meclizine hydrochloride are labeled for use only by adults and children 12 years of age and over. Consult a doctor before giving Dramamine Less Drowsy Formula or Bonine to anyone under 12.

There's also Dramamine Original Formula (dimenhydrinate), which is medically entirely different than Dramamine Less Drowsy Tablets. Dramamine Original Formula is approved for children 2 and older.

Any of these medications can cause drowsiness to some degree, but dimenhydrinate is likely to cause greater drowsiness than meclizine hydrochloride.

My pediatircian recommended 1/2 tablet Bonine for my DS6. Check with your pediatrician first to make sure if is OK for your child. - Mike

P.S - I think it was Horace Horsecollar who also recommended to me that we try it ahead ot time. This was good advice for us. DS6 showed no side effects whatsoever.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever used the Dramamine Original, but taken it at bedtime so the drowsiness would not matter?? And would the effect last for the next day?? Joan

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will call my pediatrician and see what he says and then try it before we go. Hopefully he won't need it but better be safe and sorry. Thanks again.

Dramamine Less Drowsy Formula lasts for 24 hours, but the directions for Dramamine Original Formula call for more frequent use:

To prevent motion sickness, the first dose should be taken ½ to 1 hour before starting activity

To prevent or treat motion sickness, see below:
Adults and children 12 years and over: 1 to 2 tablets every 4-6 hours; not more than 8 tablets in 24 hours, or as directed by a doctor.
Children 6 to under 12 years: ½ to 1 tablet every 6-8 hours; not more than 3 tablets in 24 hours, or as directed by a doctor
Children 2 to under 6 years: ¼ to ½ tablet every 6-8 hours; not more than 1-1/2 tablets in 24 hours, or as directed by a doctor

My daughter who has in the past been car sick.... and was on our drive down for the cruise. She had no problems on the ship and we had 18ft waves our first night !!!

Our server on board, Ritesch, also had a helpful suggestion. When my daughter was feeling seasick, he said she should eat something. I realize this is incongruous; eating and feeling sick do not normally go together, but when we made sure DD6 has frequent snacks, she felt better.

We also had dimenhydrinate generic tablets that the kids were OK'd for by the doctor. We tried them out ahead of time as well and they caused no drowsiness at all. They did not last overnight however, I think they are an every 6 hour dosage.

Even as an adullt I still get terribly car sick unless I'm driving, but didn't have a problem on the ship.

I do agree with Ritesh's (who was our server in January) when we were there one year in November and the seas were very rough our server Ireene told my mom who was seasick (but never gets car sick) to keep foor in her stomach but to limit the amount of liqid. That and the pills from the ship and she was better in no time. Me the car sick one didn't mind the rocking of the boat at all!!!

Have a great seasick free trip.
