Sears pulls ads on ABC show over "cowardly" remark
(UPDATE: Adds detail in second paragraph)
NEW YORK, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE:S - news), the No. 4 U.S. retailer, on Wednesday said it canceled its advertising on ``Politically Incorrect,'' a late-night talk show aired on the ABC television network, after the show's host called some U.S. military actions ``cowardly''.

Sears, which said it is a small advertiser on the show, received dozens of complaints about comments made by the host, Bill Maher.
``Sears took this action after reviewing a transcript of the September 17 conversation among Maher and his guests in which the U.S. military was described as cowardly,'' the company said in a statement.
According to a transcript on (http://www.abc.com), the Web site of Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS - news)-owned ABC, Maher made the reference while discussing past U.S. military campaigns.
``We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away,'' he said. ``That's cowardly.''
Maher contrasted the U.S. military actions to those taken by attackers who flew hijacked commercial airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon last week. President George W. Bush has called the attacks ``cowardly acts''.
``Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly,'' Maher said.
ABC did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
