Has anyone been? Is it worth it for a day trip. I am afraid we may be stuck in Fort Lauderdale with not much to do except the beach. (it wouldn't have been so bad 10 years ago, but with 3 kids it can get tiring) Also any other suggestions in the area?

Thanks.

Laura

We went a while back...6 or 7 years ago...but it was pretty good...smaller than SW of course, but dolphin show was fun and grounds kept up well. I would go for the day, I also remember going to a hands on childrens museum..and taking the water taxi around....try PM'ING RitaZ., she is not too far from that area.

My SIL lives in Miami Shores. :sunny: We went down a few times with the kids. There was always LOTS to do! (she planned something for every day!). The Seaquarium, while being no Sea World is worth a days trip. Also, there is Lion Country Safari not too far away, Parrot Jungle was not all that great. Just a suggestion....when we were heading down her way, she made it CLEAR to us to be sure to stay EAST of 95! :earseek: Don't know what is west of 95 but she did suggest us NOT getting out of the car to use a payphone if we got lost!!!!!

Seaquarium is def worth a day's trip. That whole Key Biscayne area is really pretty.

Lion Country Safari is about an hour North of Ft.Lauderdale. I went about 5 years ago and was NOT impressed.

Side note...Parrot Jungle recently moved to a new location and supposedly it's improved.

always quiet...west of 95 in the Miami Shores area is NOT a nice neighborhood if you're a tourist. Sorta ghetto.

Hi Pam!

It's definitely worth a day trip, that area is so pretty anyway (Key Biscayne). You'll be very close to the beach, so you can do that too if you choose. We were there about 2 years ago and the shows were actually quite good. Parrot Jungle recently relocated to Miami Beach, I haven't been there so I have no info to offer. Vizcaya isn't far from MS, but you'll want to devote some time to tour the mansion and grounds. I haven't been there in years though.

Lion Country Safari is in West Palm Beach (Palm Beach county), it's not close to Miami at all. It's about an hour from me and I live an hour away from Miami. I really like LCS, definitely worth a day trip! We went last year in the fall, and it was such a perfect day. The beautiful giraffes came as close as my window and were walking in front of our van. I was able to get some really good shots. It's best to go when it's cool or early in the day, you'll get to see more animals.

There is Metrozoo in Miami, we were there in January. That was ok, it's way South though. The park took quite a beating during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, you can still see areas that have not recovered.:( Some of the animals like the Bengal Tiger and White Tiger were impressive.::yes:: Got some good shots of that too. There is the Koala Bear exhibit, I expected that to be better than what it is. There is a lot of walking to do, not many places where to eat and it's a LONG drive South. Personally, I don't plan on going back soon.

Have a great day!:sunny:

Thanks we will definately do the Seaquarium. We are staying at the Marriott BeachPlace Towers in FL, so I don't expect the drive to be too far. I think we will pass on the Lion Country Safari we have something similar here and we have season passes.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

Just an aside, check out my post on Orlando Hotels and Attractions, Scored a great deal at Diplomat Country CLub. Although we don't plan on actually sleeping there I thought the
pool at the Westin looked really cool. Hey for $2.00 :smooth: and the kids will love the glass bottom pool.

Thanks

Metrozoo actually has a neat Dinosaur exhibit going on right now. Rita I don't know how you came south but it is pretty fast and simple if you come down the turnpike to Coral Reef Drive.

Sequarium is ok but no SeaWorld. Key Biscayne is beautiful. For beach there is Crandon Park and Bill Boggs State Park.

Parrot Jungle moved to near Miami Beach off Mac Arthur Causeway. Supposed to be better. There is also an awesome Children's Museum near there.

Also south is Monkey Jungle and Coral Castle. Both interesting. And there is always the Everglades to explore.

We've haven't been to Miami yet, but one of our favorite places to visit is Butterfly World. Another little "zoo" is Flamingo Gardens. They have just a handful of animals like alligators, otters, bobcats and lots of birds (eagles, hawks, owls, etc).

www.flamingogardens.org

Hope that helps a bit!

How about a day cruise to the Bahamas while in Fort Lauderdale? I did it once and really enjoyed it. They also offer overnight trips as well. Cruise boats have gambling and they leave from Port Everglades. The boats are pretty scanky, but enjoyable.

Lets not forget Viscaya and The Museum of Science which is near the entrance to Key Biscayne.;) The NEW Parrot Jungle is OK, they just need to put a few rides there, to make it better.;) Seaquarium has been there FOREVER and really needs to be worked on, as it is very outdated.:o There is also the Dania Beach Rollercoaster in Dania off the expressway, and yes it is EAST not West.:p It also has a go cart and video game place too.

I'm not sure how old your kids are, but we have a children's science museum right in downtown Fort Lauderdale that would be a very short drive from the Marriott where you're staying. Their website is www.mods.org and there are things for a variety of ages. Some of it is hands-on, some is geared towards little ones, and some is more scientific and for older kids. There's also an IMAX movie theater there. I think their website should tell you what movies are playing currently and maybe will tell you about current exhibits but I'm not sure.

Even though I've lived in Fort Lauderdale my whole life, I've never been down to Seaquarium, so I can't help you with that, although I do personally think it's a bit on the expensive side (considering what I hear they have to offer). The Miami Metrozoo is less expensive than Seaquarium, but then again, you can go to a zoo anywhere - Seaquarium is much less common.

On a Disney note, don't forget that there's a Character Outlet (like they have in the outlet malls in Orlando) in Sawgrass Mills mall, which is about 30 minutes west of your hotel.

There is a county park that has a water playground area. They used to have water slides, but they may have gotten rid of them. I see on their website that they have a cable-pulled water skiing thing.....might be something that an older child would like to be able to say they'd tried. I believe the park has free admission during the week, but it does say the water playground has fees. I'd be happy to call and get prices for that and the water skiing if either one interests you. I know they're still outdoor and wet activities, but they're at least different than the beach.

On a totally different note, there's also a children's art museum that would be about 20 minutes away from your hotel. It's called Young At Art and their website is http://www.youngatartmuseum.org/. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but my son went about a year ago when he was 6 and he loved it.

I'll keep thinking about other things. How old are your kids? That may help me think of things.

By the way, in Beach Place itself there is a Howl at the Moon. If you've never been, it's a singalong piano bar (like JellyRolls at WDW) and it's soooooo much fun. I don't know if you'd be able to get a sitter or not, but it's a fun night out if you can.

That sounds great. What's the name of the park?

They are 2, 4, and 7.

Thanks so much for all the replies. Sounds like we won't get board afterall.

Thanks, Rita, yes it was Quiet Waters I was talking about. I could have sworn that I put the link there....duh! Have you been there recently to be able to give more accurate info? I know I went there in '89 and enjoyed the heck out of the water slides, but obviously that was too long ago to know what it's like now.

Hey MOMTOMOOTOO - my boys are 7 and almost 2, so I know those ages well! I hope you guys have a great time at the air show. Do you know if your hotel room will have a balcony overlooking the beach and if you'll be able to watch the show from there, or will you have to go down to the beach to watch? It's a great show, but the beach is VERY crowded, and that weekend is typically extremely hot. Plan to force lots of water on the kids. We live fairly close to the beach and also near the airport, and it's fun the days before the show when the planes are practicing - they fly almost over our house at times. I've never actually been on the beach for the show - twice have gone on a boat out in the ocean, and twice have watched from my grandmother's yard (even closer to the beach than I am), so I don't know that much about how things work down on the beach.

If I think of anything else that would be fun for you to do, I'll let you know. And if you have any other Fort Lauderdale questions, let me know and I'll try to help. You can also email me directly if you want at reedjmj@bellsouth.net.

Have fun!

I have never been to Quiet Waters.:teeth: I have heard a lot about it and drive past it whenever I take Sawgrass E-way to connect with I-95. It would probably take me about 20 minutes to get there from my house, via Sawgrass. I'll have to check it out soon. ::yes::

Oooops! Found out today that I made a mistake. I didn't go to Quiet Waters park for a water slide...it was CB Smith Park. And for MomtoMooToo, here's their website. http://www.co.broward.fl.us/parks/pri01100.htm

CB Smith Park does have a water slide - and a lazy river area (like Typhoon Lagoon has). I called, and they only have their water park area open on the weekends right now. It is $7 to get in, no matter what age, and after 3 PM it is reduced to $4 fee. Additionally, I don't know if you would have to pay for park admission or not, which is usually a dollar or two per person. I think it'd be about a 30 minute drive (maybe a little longer) to get to this park from your hotel. I don't know what the crowds are like - they just reopened after redoing it so it may be very busy. There was an article about it in the paper today and it was saying that it was a $6 million project, so it must be pretty good. Of course, now I'm realizing that you're coming for the Air and Sea show, so your weekend will be busy with that. Oh well - this is out there for anyone else who comes to Ft Lauderdale.

Quiet Waters does have the water playground and skiing, but no slides.
