Sean Kingston "Beautiful Girls" - suicidal vs. in denial

its censorship or protection from lawsuits run amok, plain and simple.

Theres a few others too, Pretty Ricky's "Grind on Me" was changed to "Grind with Me" on several stations

Tiffer,

This is already being done which is why I was wondering if this is a politically correct thing. See below reference to the Black-Eyed Peas song "Let's Get It Started" which was originally "Let's Get Retarded".

Originally, this was "Let's Get Retarded," which is how it appears on the album. When it was released as a single, it was changed to "Let's Get It Started" so it would get radio play. The phrase "Let's Get Retarded" is a West Coast term that means to go crazy on the dance floor (synonyms are "Go Dumb," and "Get/Go Stupid."). The phrase is chanted at clubs and dances and used in everyday slang, but the word "Retarded" is offensive to people who see it as put-down of those who are mentally challenged. (If you want to be really politically correct, the term is "Cognitively Impaired)

I actually understand the suicide fears and the companies not wanting to glamorize it, but this song "Beautiful Girls" comes off as an upbeat tune. I hear the song all the time, didn't know the specific lyrics until today, but assumed he was singing about beautiful girls he'd never have a chance with and the "torment" of never getting one.

I fully understand.

I just beleive that if that were the case, they should censor all potentially offensive songs. Which is ridiculous.

I am also aware of the BEP's song and it's original meaning, as I lived in SoCal for a couple of years.

I also can't figure out why it's censored on some stations and not others.

Me neither.

On our stations here, the "suicide" is still in there.

Have you heard the Nickelback song "Rockstar". Half the time they are beeping out the word "drugs" and the other times they aren't. Same station. I can't figure it out. It must have to do with the time of day.

Well I'm pretty sure you cannot play "I Want to **** You" on the radio so they change it to "I Want to Love You." I was under the impression that the "public" owns the airwaves and as a result the "public" sets the rules but I could be wrong.

The song plays all the time with suicidal here...I find it ridiculous that someone would be singing about that, there are plently of people that DO commit suicide and I find it in very poor taste, like a lot of mainstream radio these days.

I just opened this thread and started reading and not even 5 seconds later guess what song comes on the radio! :rotfl: (it was the in denial version)

I haven't heard the censored version yet, and I hear it a lot on the radio. I sometimes think when they make such a big deal out of it especially, when it's already playing on the radio as is, they just make it more noticeable. I take the lyrics as tongue and cheek anyway. I can see if the song had bad words, but I just think it's dumb to censor the lyrics and draw all the attention to it.

I'm not saying that it is okay to glorify suicide and it's okay. I'm just saying I don't think the song is meant to be so literal.

No one will read this cuz I’m coming into it like 13 years too late. That’s cool, sometimes you just gotta like shout your **** into the void. I never liked this song, I just found it obnoxious and whiney but I never had a beef with it outside of my eardrums. But now I do have beef with it. In no way do I believe this **** song will drive anyone to suicide...for one I am not gonna give this song that level of importance (it is not worthy of that) and for two, like people so eloquently put it, if you’re gonna do it, you’re gonna do it. My recent issue with this song is that my dad committed suicide a little over a year ago. I do not have a huge issue with suicide related jokes and/or content, I do not expect the world to suddenly cater to my pain. I even still laugh at certain jokes and (GASP!!!) make them sometimes. But I don’t much take to things that trivialize suicide. And this song does. I am not easily triggered but I heard this song the other day at work and I wanted to punch this dude. I used to want to punch him cuz my god is his voice annoying! This song is not a BOP!!! It never was, in my opinion. But now I wanted to punch him cuz he has never truly felt suicidal or known anyone who he was aware did feel that way. Cuz it wouldn’t be so easy to say some hot chick made him feel that way if he knew the pain. And the goddamn stigma behind it. What my family and I have felt after my father’s very surprising suicide (Most of us literally had no clue he was clinically depressed cuz he showed no overt signs), and how we have been treated, and how the views on my father and his “honor” for lack of a better word have been put into question do make me offended that someone could so casually make a song like this. People sit there and sing this song and say it’s catchy, while I had to have people tell me my father was selfish or weak, or how we must have dropped the ball on him. It’s not a thing to be cute or catchy about, not when the real thing happens and people suffer and are made to feel guilt and shame. I hate to be the party pooper, but hey, if you can say you’ve had someone look you in the eye and say that your father, who always always ALWAYS took care of you and your siblings and your mom and gave you all a good life and sacrificed for you, and who they NEVER EVEN MET was selfish, then I just don’t want to hear it. Sorry
