hello,

i'm going on a 2/26 wonder cruise(first timer!). its a surprise for mom for christmas. i'm just a litle worried though- both she and i are exceptionally queasy people. how many of you guys have had problems with this? what have you found to work the best?

also- i was thinking of having the room decorated. does anyone know whats included (a banner and cascade or only one?) and any thoughts on if its worth the $30?

thanks so much,
Krissy

Hi - we are taking our first cruise in 18 days - so I can't really answer your questions - just wanted to welcome you to the Dis Boards - you will find everyone very helpful here!

My DH is very touch ywhen it comes to motion sickness. If he is a passenger in a car he has to sleep or he will get very sick. He doesn't do well flying either. We went on our first cruise almost 2 weeks ago and he didn't have to many problems. I took a suggestion from here and took some motion sickness pills, I think called Bonine with us but never used them. The only time he really had a problem was the first night at dinner. There was some rough waves and the boat rocked alot during dinner. But once we got back to our room we couldn't feel a thing.

Welcome feetkeds!
I have used the patch with no problems. You need a prescription for this. Last cruise I tried the SeaBands and they worked great. You can get these at Walgreen's for about $8.

DH and I went on our first cruise ever this past summer. It was a cruise to Bermuda so we sailed the Atlantic which can be very rough at any time of year, storm or calm weather. I got a prescription for meclazine which is also known as Bonine (you can get this over the counter as well). I had read that if you start taking this before you cruise, start the day before, and keep taking it every day once you're on board, you can prevent sea sickness which is much better than trying to treat it once it hits you. We started taking it the day before we sailed and took it every morning. It didn't make us drowsy at all, and you can drink alcohol with it. We each took 1 pill at breakfast each morning. Our doctor told us that if we did start feeling queasy that we could take up to 3 pills per day, but we never felt queasy even when we hit big waves and the ship was rocking and rolling.

I vote for Bonine. We went on our first cruise 11/15 Eastern and according to someone on the next week's cruise, one of the stars of Hercules was sick most of the week because he said it was rough. I never felt bad all week. I tried out the Bonine at MK because I get queasy just watching the tea cup ride. I went on that & the carrosel & space mountain with no problems whatsoever!!! It was great to be able to ride everything again & enjoy it! :) We did know people who were sick the entire week even with medication after they were ill. IDK if I really needed the Bonine but believe it was best not to find out.

I used Bonnine on our 1998 Carnival Cruise. I took it before we got on board and every day while on board and felt no motion sickness whatsoever. However, I did break out in a rash on my chest. The infirmary said I had an allergic reaction to the Bonnine. Anyone else have that experience with Bonnine? I am wondering if I should try something else next time.

Sorry you broke out in a rash. Neither my DH nor I had any negative side effects at all from the Bonine. As a matter of fact, I never felt better, while taking it that week. I think it's because Bonine/meclazine is also an antihistamine so it helped somewhat with my allergies.

I hope you can find something else to take that won't cause you to break out in a rash.

To answer your other question. The decorations. I ordered the birthday ones for our last cruise. It was my husband's birthday the day we sailed. The decorations included a HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner, a tabletop spray, and a hanging spray. All with Mickey theme. I think they were worth the money, our cabin looked very festive and my husband was very surprised and pleased.
I also ordered a gift from Shirley at THE PERFECT GIFT.

I didn't want to do the drug thing so I opted to try Sea Bands and loved them. Make sure you follow the directions and hit the pressure point and they were great. No concerns about adult beverages mixing with the drugs or any other reactions to them.

Happy sailing

Hello All!

I went on a may cruise my first ever and wore the seabands, and the transderm scope patch and I was in a mid ship room. I never vommited or felt sick to my stomach but boy was I really dizzy for the first 5 days of my seven day cruise. I never thought it would happen to me. I was so dissappointed that I couldn't enjoy the cruise with my family. This post is not to deter people away from cruising, on the contrary, when I wasn't Dizzy I truly enjoyed myself and would highly recommend everyone try it at least once.

Here are a few tips for people if you should find yourself in my sittuation:

1. Bring at least 2 methods of anti sickness. (sea bands, ginger, bonine, drammamine, transderm scope, ect.)

2. Get as much fresh air as you can.

3. Try and stay as midship as possible.

4. Stay below deck after dark. (Reason: When you get ill on a ride, or a car the best thing to do is to look out the window and focus on things. At night you cannot see the ocean All you see is the deck rocking. If you don't see it, it's not as bad. And this worked very well for me.)

I hope if you find yourself in a similar sittuation that these tips will help! Happy Cruising!

Well here's my .02 for what it's worth!

I am very prone to motion sickness. On our first cruise my doctor prescribed the patch. I was pretty excited because it was a non thinking medication in that you put it on and it lasts 3 days or so. It has a big warning on it that you have to make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after touching the patch or near it. Well it got itchy around it like a bandaid so I scratched. That was on the airplane ride to the cruise the night before. By the next morning my pupils were huge, dizzy, headache, light headed and sick to my stomach and vomiting quite regularly. After spending the sailaway, dinner, and the nightly fun in bed I went and spent a fortune in the ships infirmary. My husband also was having issues with it. The doctor informed us that we were both allergic although me much more so than my husband and I spent the next 3 days of the 7 day cruise in bed unable to open my eyes or move. I wish I had tried it out BEFORE I left for my cruise. The side effects of the patch are also VERY scary if you ask me. You can read about them here: http://www.transdermscop.com/site2/view-insert.html

The next cruise we decided to go the "au natural" route and bought both the sea bands and the relief bands along with ginger. The sea bands were around 8.00 and the relief bands were new to the market and about 150.00. I figured it was cheaper than a trip to the infirmary so we bought them. We put them on and they didnt work. Neither of them. Neither did the ginger work for us. I ended up yet again in the ships infirmary only to find out that those only work if you dont have deep pressure points in your wrist. Lucky me so again I was sick. The ships doctor gave me Meclizine (for free I might add as they had a big bin of them outside the door) and sent me to my room. The next day I took one of them and felt a little better but thankfully it didnt ruin my cruise like the patch did.

I guess what I am trying to say is to go with different methods just in case one or the other doesnt work and also if you are going to go the medication route try it out at HOME where you arent ruining a very expensive vacation being allergic to it. Granted you cant know for sure if the wrist bands will help or the ginger pills since you need to be moving for that but if you or your mom do opt for medication try it out before leaving home then if you have a problem you are at home and you have your own physician to help you out.

Dramamine is something compeletly different than Bonine or Meclizine or even Dramamine less drowsy. Dramamine regular is basically an antihisitimine so if you dont tolerate those well dont take it.

Meclizine (aka Bonine or Dramamine less drowsy just more expensive) you should be able to get from your local pharmacy or they can order it for you. We got 100 - 25 mg tablets for 8.99 at our local Walmart where Bonine and Dramamine 2 or less drowsy were 12 pills for 9.50. They are both made from Meclizine so if you are going to take those it is cheaper in the long run to use Meclizine. Also if you do end up taking it start before you leave on your trip. We take one each morning when our feet hit the stateroom floor and havent lost another cruise to motion sickness. We have drank with them and havent noticed an extreme drowsiness but it can vary with people. We also take about 2-3 days after being home to keep from getting the side to side ship motion.

Have a great time and I hope this helps.
Heidi

Just thought of a problem I had finding the Bonine. I looked at Target & WM & it wasn't on the shelf. The people I asked couldn't find it either. I was ready to give up then mentioned it to one of the pharmasists while getting another Rx. They keep it behind the counter even though it is an OTC medication. It was 3xx for 8 pills.

Does anyone know if any of the methods are ok for expecting moms?
When I had morning sickness (all of the time) ginger worked. I wonder if it will work on the ship as well.

I am very prone to motion sickness, both on boats, planes, and in cars. I use the patch every time we travel and love it. I don't seem to suffer the side effects, with the exception of an occasional dry mouth, and I haven't had any motion sickness on any of our cruises so far. My daughter, who also gets motion sick, doesn't reallly need to take anything on on our cruises, just the occasional less drowsy dramamine. My son, takes nothing and does very well.
If you go for the patch, I would give it a try prior to your cruise to make sure it's okay.

Ginger works for me on the ship. I take 2 capsules with each meal and at bedtime.

Thank you so much for all your advice!

Yesturday i ordered online:

a relief band bracelet (electrical currents! yikes!)

ginger pills

motion eaze oil

this will join my sea bands bracelet. i'm hoping between these 4 methods mom and i will be able to find something that works. i'm also comforted to hear that feb. is a generally very calm time to sail...

i'll also be ordering the decorations- they sounded lovely!

Kristin

When I went on the Norway years ago, I felt dizzy and queasy. I took the pills the infirmary handed out and was told to eat alot of apples. The pectin in the apples helps with sea-sickness. It worked for me!
