Sea Glass

I never heard of sea glass until we went to Maine. Saw a couple picking it up in Bar Harbor. We went back later in the week and the kids spent a good hour and found quite a bit. It's so pretty, I have it in an antique green glass dish. Anyone else collect sea glass? This woman's husband was kind of complaining that she has to look for it everywhere -- I said Hey Dude - it's free, don't complain!!

yep i collect it. i've been collecting it since i was in elementary school! i have a whole glass vase full of it.

I collect it too. I love the variety of blues and greens you can find.
I never thought of it as something FREE!!! Good point!

OK where do you both collect it at? I don't believe it's at the Jersey Shore. Is it at most beaches?

I collect it on the shores of Lake Superior. Often I find old bits of china and porcelain as well.

Lake Superior has had many shipwrecks (think Edmund Fitzgerald) over the years so some of the glass and china comes from those wrecks. Kind of cool when you think about it.

We collect sea glass on the shores of Peconic Bay here...I have a friend who makes lovely frames and other crafts out of them...quite beautiful!

I found a beautiful piece of green sea glass on the beach in Cape May NJ. I had never heard of it until I met a women on the beach collecting it. She said she keeps it in a pretty crystal bowl and everyone who comes to her house loves it. I can see why, it is very pretty.

We have very beautiful blue sea glass down here. They make great jewerly out of it.

We call it beach glass here. It's a really hot item around here for jewelry.

There are lots of beaches here to walk along and collect our treasures. I have jars of it. One of the rarest colors to find is red, I haven't been lucky enough to find one yet but I have some beautiful greens, blues, browns & white/clear.

Almost any body of moving water can have "sea glass". Its just pollution that the water has softened the edges and color. Fun to find, but comes from a bad source, peoples glass bottles thrown into the ocean.

I collect sea glass. I've got all colors, blue, green, red and brown. I even have some that I've gotten from the black sand beaches in Hawaii. I should put up my Hawaii pictures sometime.

I love sea glass, but only being near the Susquehanna River in central PA, it is hard to come by!

When we visit family in Cape Cod, I usually find a peice or two. When we went to Grand Cayman on DCL last month, DS and I found a bunch just off the road including a beautiful cobalt blue piece!! I have DSs trained to spot it! Now I am searching for the perfect container to put it in.

Anita Shreve wrote a book titled Sea Glass!

Fun to find, but comes from a bad source, peoples glass bottles thrown into the ocean.

it's not necesarily purposeful pollution. in the oceans, much of it comes from broken glass booeys and the like.

Mine comes from Lake Erie. It is really lovely. Thanks Karen for the reminder about the book. Sea Glass by Anita Shreve is a good book.
