I don't know if anyone here is familiar with the Scrip program, but I noticed that they offer a Disney gift card for sale.

If you are familiar with it, is this Disney card good for the parks, or is it just for the Disney store?

Thanks!!!

It is the all-purpose type that is good in the parks and the stores. Our school offers a $1000 denomination specifically for people who would like to use them to pay off their travel packages. My Disney habit is going to end up paying for the bulk of my son's 8th grade trip to DC. :)

Wow wish our school offered Disney for script. We usually only have food stores. Then at Christmas they add few more stores

Yes, I've bought Disney gift cards from the scrip program quite a few times and used them at the parks.

They are good for the parks, too! I usually buy my Disney cards monthly through Scrip, to help me save up for our trips! I love Scrip!

I buy them from school and use them to pay our DVC annual dues. So, essentially, our DVC is helping to pay for our DD's tuition:lmao:...at least that's how I sell it to DH every time I want to add-on!

For the most part, Disney gift cards (with the exception of the e-certificates) are good anywhere at WDW that has a card scanner. If they take credit cards or room charge, they probably accept gift cards and Disney Visa Rewards cards. The souvenir carts and the "walking vendors" are the only ones I can think of that do NOT accept them.

Thank you everyone!

My son's band sells these. I will be able to use the money I am taking to Disney to add to his band fun as well.

:goodvibes

They sell SCRIP at my sons school. I bought 2,000 in cards and paid for our trip with them. Great to raise a little money for his school

You can try asking whoever runs the SCRIP program at your school. There are literally several hundred types of cards available. My sons school has an order form with the most popular ones, but you can order any card available through the SCRIP center.

That's what I was going to say. There's usually a form they send home with the popular ones, but at the SCRIP website you can see what else is available. I can't believe how the schools get money from us vacationing in disney! :rotfl:

But am I correct that you lose your credit card rewards as you have to pay cash, or the equivalent for the Scrip cards? Also, there is an IRS ruling that the funds cannot go directly in "your" account, but instead in a general fund for everyone's benefit.
I am not sure I will not go ahead and buy the Scrips cards for our 2012 Fantasy cruise- but wish it was more of a win-win.

I don't know much about the credit card rewards as I pay cash for everything myself.

As far as the IRS ruling, I know in our case, a certain percent (I think its 2% for Disney cards) goes back to the band. Of that amount, half goes into the general fund and the other half goes into the student's individual accounts to cover the next years expenses.

For seniors in the band, they get to designate who their balance goes to when they graduate. Generally, it goes to those who need help meeting the expenses for the band (we had to pay $900 this year )

I am not sure what scrip company your school uses, but most have a low rate for Disney (ours is 2%). You can get the scrip in $25, $100, and $1000 demoninations and we plan to use it for our DDP and miscellaneous things for our next trip. The BETTER deal is buy for Vons (or one of it's sister stores) and then trade the Vons card for Disney cards, you get 4% instead of 2%. We did both ways (Vons for Disney, and just Disney) for our last trip and it worked great. Our daughter's school has a scrip obligation so it really does help. Stater Bros, and other grocery stores, will not let you buy a gift card with a gift card, but Vons did and it doubled our rewards!! Plus, if we spent $50 then we got 10 cents off each gallon of gas. Planning does pay off...and if anyone wants to buy scrip from me in So Cal, let me know!!!

I know they had the same regulation with Girl Scouts. We were not allowed to credit any funds earned through the trip to any specific girls account nor benefit. The way it was explained to me from the GS headquarters and the band personnel was to maintain non profit status, you have to allocate all funds earned to the betterment of the whole group.

I believe there is a place on the order form to do write ins after visiting the scrips website. That is what I did last year when purchasing gift cards for my nieces and nephews as well as for myself for Disney. The profit on the Disney cards is lower than on other cards--at least they were last year when I bought them.

Does all schools that sells them allow the money to be used for school trips?

It depends on what organization is running it as a fundraiser. At my Nieces school they are from the PTO and the money is available to all classes on an equal basis.

At the school I work at it is a PTSO fundraiser and it is for all levels of hte school K--12 for field trip busses.

Where my nephew goes to school it is a fundraiser and can be used by the child to designate where "his" profits are turned over. Tuition, class trips, sports trips, chess club trips.

My daughter's school the fundraier is for the music department and can be allplied to band/chorus/orchestra as each participant sees fit.

I believe all districts and systems have different procedures for thier fundraisers and how they are designated.

That's how it works for us too - of the 2% the school gets on the Disney cards, 65% can be applied directly to student account costs and the other 35% goes to the school. When a student graduates the balance in his account can be transferred to another student or donated to the school's hardship fund for kids who can't afford class trips, activity fees, etc.

As I understand it (which admittedly is just in passing) the IRS ruling applies to 501(c) charities, and as such doesn't have the same implications for public schools (and sports & band programs offered by public schools).

ok, here i am wondering how i was gonna buy scrip now that we have moved back to so cal and stumbled upon your post. so, let me know how you would like to proceed. kids are coming for a visit and looking forward to a trip to the magical place so the sooner the better. yeah!
