The One With Cinderella’s Royal Table

I have to preface this by saying that I’ve been absolutely dreading writing this review. I struggled with glossing over it or skipping it all together, but in the end I decided that I’m going to post the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here goes…

Those of you that followed my PTR will know that Bryan and I held a tournament asking those participating in the PTR to choose restaurants paired up bracket style against one another. At the end of 10 long weeks CRT emerged the victor, chosen overwhelmingly as the favorite WDW restaurant of my DIS friends. While I did not vote, my family has enjoyed immensely our 2 previous visits to CRT (breakfast and dinner)and our last stood out as one of our favorite meals of that trip to mostly to exemplary service. We’ve been lucky to have been taken care of by amazing CMs who called Maddie princess and made her feel incredibly special. They’ve always gone above and beyond to make dining in the castle a magical and memorable experience. The food has always been good, but not great. It’s been the service over and over that wowed us. We’ve had nothing but wonderful memories in the castle---until now.

We arrived at the check in desk of CRT at 6:45 to find a mob scene of folks trying to escape the rain, trying to get into the restaurant without reservations, and trying to get in early despite reservations for much later in the evening. Bryan made his way through the crowd to check us in only to be told rather curtly that we couldn’t check in until 5 minutes before our ADR. Knowing that Disney’s policy was for guests to check in 15 minutes early that didn’t sit well with us, but there was nothing for us to do but retreat into the crowd and wait.

Promptly at 6:55 Bryan once again approached the desk and this time was allowed to give our name. 10 minutes later we were called into the lobby.

The line for photos with Cinderella was long, but it usually is. It moved quickly and Cindy was quite lovely. I really enjoyed the addition of special restaurant borders that PP offered this year.

We were lucky to find a seat in the crowded lobby-it made the scene outside look calm-where we waited about 35 minutes to be called upstairs. The masses in the lobby, most of whom has spent the afternoon in wet clothes and ponchos, made for a very humid and uncomfortable waiting area. By the time we went upstairs we were all sweaty and tired.

The ceiling in the lobby

We were shown to a table on the upper tier closest to the staircase, just one table away from where everyone enters and exits the dining room. It wasn’t a great location, but as we settled in we were all eager for the evening of magic we’ve come to expect from CRT.

As we waited I saw another family (2 adults and 2 grown children) being seated right next to us. A server quickly approached them and took their drink orders. Since it had been a while since we’d stopped for beverages we looked on longingly as they quickly received their beverages and then their dinner rolls.

We busied ourselves admiring Maddie’s magic wand and wishing star and taking photos, but not until about 10 minutes after we sat down- while we were considering flagging down the next server to happen by and beg him to bring us some cokes- our waiter appeared.

I’ve waited tables for a very, very long time. I understand that anyone can have a bad day and be in a bad mood. While I do not forgive our server for the way he treated us that evening, I also don’t think it’s fair to post his name on the internet. We’ll call him Joe.

Joe approached us and quickly set the tone for our evening. He very snidely and hurriedly asked what we wanted to drink. In one sentence he managed to make sure we knew he did not have time for the likes of us.

Maddie asked for Sprite and a glass of water, I requested Coke and a water, and Bryan asked for a Diet Coke and a water. Joe heaved a big sigh and told us that the water there isn’t filtered, but he’d bring it if we really wanted it. Now, I understand that CRT has reached signature status simply because of the characters and exclusive access to the interior of the castle and I try really hard not to dwell on costs at WDW, but when was the last time any of you sat down at a meal that cost $70 a head and weren’t given water automatically? And since we’d been treated so sweetly by the server at the Plaza (a sandwich shop) a few days prior when making the same request, his response was even more shocking.

We assured him that we still wanted the water and went ahead and placed our orders. For starters Maddie was to receive the standard child’s cheese cubes and grapes. Bryan chose the cheese plate that he’d so enjoyed the year before, and I selected the soup du jour having loved the soup I’d had there prior.

While we waited for our first course Bryan saw our beloved server from last year, and we watched wistfully as he smiled, joked, and bowed to the guests in his station.

Joe returned with our first course, tossed it down in front of us and was ready to hustle off when Maddie stopped him. You see, last year our server had given both Maddie and I wands and had presented Bryan with a sword as well. Clearly this wasn’t really something affected Bryan or I much, but it was one of Maddie’s favorite memories. So, Mads took it upon herself to ask Grumpy Joe if he wouldn’t mind bringing a wand for her mommy and a sword for her daddy. Joe shot us a look that said “you allow your child to ask such things of me?” and told her no, that they were only for kids and walked away. As we assured Maddie that we were perfectly happy without them, it did not escape our attention that the twenty-something daughters of Joe’s table next door had wands of their own.

Maddie loved her cheese and grapes-two of her favorite foods, but I wasn’t wild about my soup. To be fair the soup of the day was a rather boring sounding vegetable, but based on past experiences I went with it. Bryan’s cheese plate was the major disappointment of the course. I compared pictures of last year’s offering and it looks very similar, but this one was much lower quality. In fact Bryan asked me to try what appeared to be goat cheese (Mr. Personality certainly didn’t bother to explain the offerings) tasted EXACTLY like cream cheese. As Joe cleared our mostly full plates he sort of aggressively asked if we hadn’t enjoyed it, we decided not to engage told him it was ok.

Sometime after the first course was cleared, the wishing ceremony occurred. While I didn’t capture the moment in photos as well as I did last year, Maddie still found it quite magical. She told us that her wishes had already come true.:goodvibes

Someone other than Joe delivered our main courses. Bryan and I had both chosen the Beef Tenderloin with Garlic Scalloped Potatoes and Tomato Butter, and Maddie selected the child’s Beef Tenderloin with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans.

I really should have taken the photos with the silver wear next to the food to more accurately show the size of the portions, but believe me when I say that Maddie’s portion of beef was larger than the one served to Bryan and I. I had requested my beef medium and Bryan asked for medium rare, both were served well done. Maddie’s was also cooked through, but she was much less bothered by it. The portion of potatoes appeared to be approximately 2 ounces, and the asparagus was simply sad. It was young baby asparagus, but it had been cooked so aggressively that it was a limp, flavorless mess. It literally curled up on itself when we picked it up.

About 15 minutes after our meal was served, with all of our glasses empty and no Joe in sight, Bryan finally approached one of the hostesses and asked if she might be able to send someone, anyone over to our table. Joe appeared momentarily and snottily asked what we needed.

Bryan is a calm, patient man. Having married someone who carries the fabled Irish Temper he has to be, we can’t both be hot heads! It takes a great deal to make him mad, but Joe’s attitude toward him was the last straw. Bry rather intimidatingly explained that our meat was overcooked, the portions unacceptable, and the asparagus just bad. He said the very least that Joe could do was refill our glasses and go ahead and bring dessert. And bless his heart, he did it all in a tone that would not upset Maddie while I distracted her with princesses sightings (they hadn’t made it to us yet).

Joe did not remove our entrees, but with a sigh on his lips an eye roll in his heart he did return with refills. And was quickly followed by the chef.

Honestly, our biggest problem with the meal was not the poor food. It’s CRT not Peter Luger’s, we get that. It was the service. Mediocre to bad food would have been a minor footnote in our vacation memories if not for the unforgivably rude and condescending way we were treated by our boy Joe. We'd have been laughing about what a great time we had eating bad food if we'd been treated decently!

When the chef appeared, Bryan kindly explained that the food wasn’t great and that the asparagus was kind of gray and flaccid, but that Joe had been the biggest issue throughout the night, and that our every interaction with him had been an unpleasant one. The chef was very nice, listened attentively and offered to prepare all 3 of us new meals. He really did do his best to make the food part of the evening right. My guess is that the kitchen was just having a bad night. I’ve read dining reviews from others dining the month before we visited and the month after that were all favorable and featured photos of food that looked much better than ours. We declined new meals, explaining to the chef that we were just done and would like to move on to the next course. The chef kindly offered to make us any dessert that he could-offering crème brulee (which he said was only for special occasions) or larger portions of menu offerings. Again we declined and said that what we’d ordered would be fine. I can’t say enough about the kindness of the chef. He did go above and beyond to try to make us happy with our food, including having a new portion of lovely asparagus sent to the table. By that point we just wanted to get the meal over with.

Right after the chef apologetically left our table, the princess parade began. We were visited by Ariel, Aurora, Snow White, and Jasmine. Jasmine was the stand out of this trip. She was simply lovely and took lots of time chatting with Maddie and calling her princess.

The man in the photo is not Joe BTW

Our desserts were served sometime during our royal photo sessions. Joe explained that in addition to the dessert trio I'd ordered I was being given the very special crème brulee in honor of my birthday. While laughable after our chat with the chef, it was our most pleasant conversation with Joe of the evening. Bryan ate some of his lemon sorbet, and Maddie enjoyed decorating the sundae she’d ordered. The special brulee tasted ok, and was well executed (we’d clearly been marked, the chef was not taking any chances on us). We asked immediately for the bill to sign, and as soon as Maddie finished with her sundae we left.

Bryan and I were talking tonight as I typed this and both agreed that this was our most memorable meal of the trip, and how much that saddens us both. We’d love to be remembering wonderful meals at the Yachtsman and Narcoossees (spoiler!), or remembering what a lovely time we’d had at CRT despite the food. Instead we’re left with memories of being treated more poorly by a CM than we’ve ever been treated –even in the real world.

I know that I should have made a trip to Guest Services immediately following this meal, but honestly we just wanted to move on (I haven’t done very well at that have I?). It had been such a disappointing experience that I just couldn't bear the idea of standing in line at guest services to recount it.

We needed to find a way to recapture the magic, and I had an idea.

Cinderella’s Royal Table

Service – 0

Food – 2 (the willingness of the chef to make things right went a long way)

Would We Return? Well this is a tricky one. If it were up to Bryan and me the answer would be a resounding no. It’s not really up to Bry and I though is it? Maddie was pleased as punch with her princess visits, and still loves the experience of dining in the castle. We’ll be trying lunch on our next visit, and if Joe happens to be assigned to us we’ll politely ask for a different server.

Up Next: Mommy Goes All In To Save the Night

The One Where Mommy Goes All In

After such a long day capped off with a disappointing meal, the smart thing to do would be leave the park, get a good night’s sleep, and start fresh the next day.

I have never been accused of doing the smart thing.

I knew we’d still have time to hit the 9 o’clock M&G with Tiana and Naveen if we got in line right then. Bryan thought it was a very bad, very risky idea. If we missed them again Maddie would likely be devastated and the evening well and truly lost. I persisted, confident that if we did meet them they could save the day.

We found ourselves 2nd in line to meet the prince and princess (perhaps the meet times had been pushed back because of the bad weather that evening?) behind a lovely group of young women in their early twenties. A small line quickly formed behind us including a sweet little girl and her mom. As we waited, Maddie and the adorable little girl-Annie from Boston- bonded and had a fabulous time chatting about their trips, favorite princesses, their dresses, and anything and everything.

About 10 minutes later Tiana and Naveen appeared to greet their guests. Maddie and Annie squealed with delight and eagerly awaited their turn. The young ladies in front of us had been watching Maddie and Annie interact the entire time we waited, and when the CM lowered the rope and gestured for them to meet the royal couple they quietly asked if they could wait a bit longer. Those lovely young women had decided that they’d like to watch Maddie and Annie have their turns meeting Tiana and Naveen and would rather go after them. It seems like such a simple thing, but it was such a redeeming moment for us that I won’t soon forget it.

Maddie went first and quickly got down to the business of giving gifts and getting her questions answered. She’d been telling me all afternoon that she just had to ask if Raymond was really dead. I tried to discourage her, but she could not be dissuaded. Tiana kindly explained that he’d just gone to live in the sky with Evangenline and that they could see him any time they wanted. Maddie followed up with “How do you know where to look for him?” Naveen quickly responded “Second star to the right!” and that was good enough for Maddie.

She then presented Tiana with her bracelet which Naveen seemed quite taken with. He suggested that it was so lovely they should use it as décor their restaurant. He also said they’d put it up high so that Louis didn’t mistake it for candy. Tiana patiently told him she’d rather just wear it.

Tiana showing Naveen the bracelet

Maddie then asked if Lottie has found a husband yet. They told her that Lottie is still single and looking, so Maddie offered up her 2 year old cousin. She explained that he’s not a prince, but he’s pretty cute if Lottie wouldn’t mind waiting for him to get older. Tiana and Naveen nearly broke character, but managed to hold back laughter long enough to tell Mads that they thought that was a fabulous idea.
Everyone posed for pictures and then exchanged hugs before we left. It might have been a risky move, but it had paid off. Tiana and Naveen came through.

This one just kills me. She looks so tiny!

Not only did she leave happy, but so did Bryan and I. There's just something special about watching such wonderful characters interact with a child who loves them so very much. We were both so glad that we'd gambled and won. We'd gotten our magic back.

We made our way through the gathering parade crowds and and stopped for a PP photog before we slipped through the Emporium on our way out.

We got stopped by the MSEP at the end of Main Street, but managed to get to the bus stop quickly. Back at POR we hit the main pool for about 30 minutes before calling it a night.

Another Disney day was in the books.

Up Next: We get Wild

I am so sorry for your terrible CRT exprience. That is truly unacceptable! Sure, anyone can have an "off" day, but even in an off day he should have done better! At least Maddie had a great time.

I am glad that Tiana and Naveen were able to brighten your evening!

Bahahahahahaha, Drag Queen Aurora. I totally forgot about that.

You know Shannon, those really are great PP photos on Main Street. Just totally "In the moment".

Awwww my heart just literally broke reading about all the falls and near falls. Such a sin.

Such a shame too that Tiana and Naveen don't have an alternate indoor meeting location like so many other characters do.

Aww that last Cindy and Maddie picture is adorable.

Oh my, just a horrible experience at CRT. I guess it's so nice that Maddie would be oblivious to it, but all in all sad nonetheless. You know, it really does drive home a point to me though and why I so vehemently avoid TS restaurants (not to mention the time it takes up). I have read wonderful and amazing reviews of many of the Disney restaurants, many just glowing. BUT, at the end of the day, they are all really hit and miss. And for me to spend that amount of money on food, I just can't risk a miss.

Also I need to add that at $70 a head... I'M GETTING A WAND!!!! :wizard:

OH... MY... GOD!!!!! That is the sweetest, funniest thing offering up her cousin like that. I just can't even... I am seriously dying here. :cutie:

Drag Queen Aurora! I'd forgotten about her too, but now I'm sitting here at my desk giggling like a child. :lmao:

So sorry about the service at CRT. I am an ex-server my self (waited tables for 12 years!) and so is DH, and we get that there are bad days, but there is no excuse for how Joe treated you. The kicker for me would have been when Maddie asked for the sword and want for you and Bryan and he said kids only and then to look over and see 20 something girls with them at his other table? I'm so glad Maddie didn't notice, but I'm sorry you had such a terrible time. I would have been so tempted to complain too.

That meet and greet with Tiana and Naveen melted my heart. I have never heard anyone say they had a bad meet with them. We have to make meeting them a priority for September for sure. Glad they got things back on track!

I love those photopass pics - just thinking that eating ice cream while in Disney with the castle in the background is a pretty perfect vacation

Sorry you didn't get to meet Tiana & Naveen - we loved our meet & greet with them last trip. Doubly annoying that you had to wait but then couldn't with the rain.

Oh my gosh - that server sound horrible - hopefully the fact that you mentioned something to the chef it gets noted somewhere in his file. I totally understand that people can have an off day - but if he is having that "off" of a day Disney shouldn't put him with customers. Glad that Maddie still enjoyed the experience though and her comment of "She told us that her wishes had already come true" got me a bit misty eyed

aw, love how kids can make friends so easily (i.e., Maddie and Boston Annie)

ok, guess I have to retract my comment above since you did get to meet Tiana and Naveen :goodvibes glad they came through for you!

You would not believe the amount of tears that just came out of my eyes

Dying over Maddie offering her cousin up for Lottie :rotfl2:

The One Where Mommy Goes All In

Shannon! It was too sad reading your dining experience at CRT... heartbreaking! But, so glad that Maddie enjoyed herself... isn't that what childhood is all about, not knowing the ugly reality of the world around us!

So glad to hear Tiana and Naveen brought happiness back into your day! Love all the excite that Maddie's brachlets give the characters, especially knowing how hard she worked on them.

I just love this photo! I'm happy that you are so close to another trip... I'm afraid I'm too far away from another trip... but if my DGD can convince her dad... we may just be able to work it out!

Glad you're not giving up on your trip reports... I really am living vicariously thorough your trip reports!

Hang in there! Karen

first of all, I LOVE all your pictures! the photopass pics in the rain and with maddie eating ice cream are PERFECT! they capture your day so well and you all look so happy! and I love all the borders! I wish some of those had been a choice this year!

oh, poor maddie falling at Disney! that is not very magical....

ok, i'm not going to say anything about CRT--we're just gonna wipe that from our memories! but I have to say, that's the best snow white I've ever seen and jasmine's abs.....little jealous is all i'm sayin'.

your tiana and Naveen meet! how awesome! we have SO got to see them next trip!

I cannot believe your next trip will be here in 70 days!!! :scared1:

The princess pics are great, and I adore the ice cream/poncho pics!

Ugh - I am still seething about the CRT experience. That is just NOT right. Terrible, just TERRIBLE service. :( I hope that you will be able to experience a great CRT meal in May to make up for this one. (BTW, that cheese plate is so paltry - I’m really shocked by it - surely in a World run by a MOUSE they could do better with the cheese???) Okay, wait, I’m still too mad to stop. The sword/wand thing makes my blood boil. That place has a LONG history of handing those out to adults without being asked - a little princess actually asks for something for her parents instead of herself (I mean, come on, it’s not like that happens every 5 minutes!), and this jerk can’t be bothered to walk over to where they are and bring them over???? GAH!!!!

OMG! I am laughing so HARD!!! :rotfl2: I totally forgot about Maddie and her bracelets for the princesses. You must have been like :crazy2: when I was telling you the other night that Willow had decided to make bracelets for the characters. You must have been all, “DUH, Roni!” :rotfl2: I swear - it was something she came up with on her own. I feel like a buffoon! :rotfl2:

The Tiana/Naveen meet was FANTASTIC! :woohoo: So glad that they could save the night! I love Tiana - I have never met a Tiana who wasn’t totally into being Tiana. She is one of my favorites to meet.

SO MANY UPADTES FROM SO MANY AWESOME PEOPLE I AM SO EXCTIED!!!

70 DAYS?!?!?! Is it REALLY that few?!?! Urgh, it feels like its so much longer than that!! Oh well. You guys are at POR again, right?? We’ll have to compare notes sometime soon!! :)

Great princess meets! Lol. And those pp shots are honestly adorable and awesome! Sometimes you just need some poncho shots, and the caption! PRICELESS. We’ve decided that the remix of that “song” is going to be in our trip video….. OH MY GOSH MAYBE YOU GUYS WILL BE IN OUR VIDEO!!????!??

Oh no! No Naveen and two slips! That’s a rough night! Glad Maddie felt better!!

Awe, despite Cindy looking derpy in the photo it looks like it was a good meet and greet?

Oh. My. God.

My mouth seriously just dropped open at the fact that your server downright said NO to wands/swords WHAT THE ACTUAL EFF I WOULD RAISE SUCH A STINK IF THAT HAPPENED TO ME LIKE NO, JUST NO #GETOUT.

Seriously, I’m a little enraged, like, I’ve served for years now, and even if a table is being a complete nimrod (ie, today, Canada vs US hockey, gold, Olympics, lotsa not nice people in there today) YOU DON’T BE THAT MUCH OF A NIMROD BACK

#ugh

So glad that the chef was able to at least do his part to make your night a little more enjoyable. I do have to say, Steven & I did lunch there in Dec and the food quality definitely wasn’t the greatest, I thought maybe it was due to it being lunch not dinner, but who knows? I’m still interested in breakfast.

…I’m sorry….but WHAT is that Aurora…

Jasmine just LOOKS perfect, she’s actually like, the best/correct skin tone I’ve seen on one in a while! Most of them are just too white. I knkow that the friends share, and some can’t go that dark, but still, you should be the right like, shade of tanned…

Glad that you guys are returning. I find that the service really does make or break a place. I’ve done Tony’s twice now and both times REALLY not been impressed with the food, but the service has been OUTSTANDING both times, and has led to 2 new Disney friends lol) I’m sorry you guys had such a crappy time, and I really do hope that next time is far superior!

NAVEEN CAN ALWAYS SAVE THE DAY

Awe, so nice of the girls to let you go in front of them! I won’t lie, I usually do that in certain lines, but it’s usually because I know the characters friends and don’t want to waste too much time lol.

YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS MY BAAAAAABBBBBYYYY

But really…I had completely forgotten that you sent me a picture of the three asking if it was the one I knew the friend of until right now… Whooops! SO glad they were able to make the night end on a good note, he really is absolutely fantastic at his job, and honestly, far superior to the other friends Naveen has. I was actually able to see him twice last week, which was a first in MONTHS as the kid does so much other stuff he’s rarely hanging around the glen anymore :( That hugging picture is seriously priceless, so cute. Also the one when maddie’s running back towards the camera she looks adorable, and Naveen’s face is spot on.

Now I feel all warm and happy inside at the end of the update, this is lovely, glad that your day ended up ending on a positive note!!

Excellent updates as usual, I had gotten very far behind.:coffee:

Your CRT meal sound so disappointing and sad. What terrible service especially when you had a child with you. You could ALMOST expect to be treated slightly different if it is just two adults but when there is a young Princess dining in CRT, there is absolutely no excuse.

So happy you managed to rescue the rest of your night.

Oh, wow. I am so sorry about your CRT experience. I still think a letter to Disney about it would be in order. That man does not deserve to be a cast member in the most special place on Earth to dine. :(

Thank goodness for the Tiana Meet and Greet. I am glad your evening was redeemed!

Can't wait to hear the rest!

Really? Did they do the whole route? I think this one went all the way to the end, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure, as we were right at the beginning, but I think they must have gone the whole route. I don't know if there is another "exit" from the parade route other than the end?

I'm so sorry that you had a bad experience at CRT. I wish I could say I was surprised, but as I have told you in your PTR we had a bad experience there that really left a bad taste in our mouths about the restaurant in general (and I'm not talking about the food!). I'm glad that the princess interactions there were good, and that visiting with T&N managed to help redeem the night. It still is upsetting though, and it pretty much puts a cloud over things when you have an experience that is supposed to be one of the best of the best, at least for a princess lover, and it falls flat. I'm kind of shocked, to be honest, that this bad behavior is allowed to continue over time at CRT because people do go there paying a premium price and expecting a premium experience.

What horrible and wonderful updates! I'm so sorry about y'alls experience at CRT. Bad food is one thing but bad service just takes the cake. There's no excuse for someone in WDW to have that kind of attitude. Bad days are understandable but you still shouldn't be so rude.

I am so glad though that Tiana & Naveen came to the rescue! And that was so sweet of those girls to let Maddie go first. She has such great questions for the characters. I don't think I would ever think to ask those things.

Love the photos with the Princesses at Town Square Theater.

What a horrid experience you had at CRT. Our kids never went and Mark and I have discussed giving it a try once, but we just can't seem to pull the plug. After your recent experience, I don't think I'll be pulling that plug (sounds like our experience with the CM at Whispering Canyon Café...worse experience of our life).

Maddie looks happy though with her meeting her "fellow" princesses.

And what a way to make things better than for the people in the front of the line to let the girls go first and then Maddie's wonderful interaction.

Our next trip will be upon us in a mere 70 days so I’m going to make a real effort at getting this TR moving more quickly.

Good! 'Cause posting three at once is just not good enough! :rolleyes1:

Rapunzel was first, and whispered to Maddie that the Beast has stinky feet but that he’s a lovely dancer.

And how would she know this?

Beast! That two timer!!

My girl Drag Queen Aurora was next.

Forgot about her/him!
Did you check for an Adam's apple?

When we emerged from visiting royalty (and browsing gift shop )

What?? A gift shop?
In Disney?

Bryan wanted to stop at the Plaza Ice Cream Shop for a snack. Maddie decided to join him and have a scoop of mint chocolate chip.

I keep saying it.
Your daughter is very wise.

Photopass photographers had been scarce the whole trip, so despite the fact that we were wearing ponchos and two-thirds of us were having ice cream I made us stop. These turned out to be some of my favorite PP pics.

I love that Maddie just goes on scarfing down her ice cream.

I believe the correct caption for these photos is "Photopass? Aint nobody got time for that"

::yes::

While we waited we chatted with a very nice woman from Scotland who was shocked that she’d come all the way to Florida for rainstorms while her hometown was enjoying unseasonably sunny weather.

Ooh. I hate it when that happens.
When I'm in Florida, I want it to be major snow storms back home with record low temperatures.

As we started to walk away Maddie slipped and fell. It was a combination of the rain and plastic footwear, but Maddie took it very hard. We sat on a bench while she cried for a few minutes afraid that she’d gotten her dress dirty, would need stitches, etc. (Neither of those things happened by the way.) Once she’d calmed down we agreed that holding hands would be best as we traversed the slippery pavement. Not 10 steps later she almost went down again. This time she was so upset that I carried her the rest of the way to the restrooms.

aw, poor little tyke.

When we finally met up with Bryan again, changing shoes was our first order of business.

Good call.

I have to preface this by saying that I’ve been absolutely dreading writing this review. I struggled with glossing over it or skipping it all together, but in the end I decided that I’m going to post the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here goes…

I hear ya. Oh, I hear you all right.
I had the same struggle when I posted my last chapter.

Yup. I remember.
I think I voted for CRT, too.

We’ve had nothing but wonderful memories in the castle---until now.

Queue foreboding music

Bryan made his way through the crowd to check us in only to be told rather curtly that we couldn’t check in until 5 minutes before our ADR. Knowing that Disney’s policy was for guests to check in 15 minutes early that didn’t sit well with us, but there was nothing for us to do but retreat into the crowd and wait.

How dare you try to check in at the time you're supposed to check in!?!?

By the time we went upstairs we were all sweaty and tired.

Good thing dining at CRT is going to be great, right?
Right?

Right?

As we waited I saw another family (2 adults and 2 grown children) being seated right next to us. A server quickly approached them and took their drink orders. Since it had been a while since we’d stopped for beverages we looked on longingly as they quickly received their beverages and then their dinner rolls.

Was their server Joe, too?
Or someone else?

Joe approached us and quickly set the tone for our evening. He very snidely and hurriedly asked what we wanted to drink. In one sentence he managed to make sure we knew he did not have time for the likes of us.

lovely. :sad2:

but when was the last time any of you sat down at a meal that cost $70 a head and weren’t given water automatically?

Good point.

While we waited for our first course Bryan saw our beloved server from last year, and we watched wistfully as he smiled, joked, and bowed to the guests in his station.

D'oh!

So, Mads took it upon herself to ask Grumpy Joe if he wouldn’t mind bringing a wand for her mommy and a sword for her daddy. Joe shot us a look that said “you allow your child to ask such things of me?” and told her no, that they were only for kids and walked away.

Is there a word that means the opposite of pixie dust?

As we assured Maddie that we were perfectly happy without them, it did not escape our attention that the twenty-something daughters of Joe’s table next door had wands of their own.

:headache:

As Joe cleared our mostly full plates he sort of aggressively asked if we hadn’t enjoyed it, we decided not to engage told him it was ok.

I wonder what he would've said if you'd told him the truth?

Maddie still found it quite magical. She told us that her wishes had already come true.:goodvibes

Wow. That's quite the special young lady you have there.

I had requested my beef medium and Bryan asked for medium rare, both were served well done.

In other words... ruined.
I know very few people who like their steak well done.

Joe appeared momentarily and snottily asked what we needed.

"Oh, we don't need anything. We're happy with nothing. So I assume you will be too, when that's what you get for your tip."

Bry rather intimidatingly explained that our meat was overcooked, the portions unacceptable, and the asparagus just bad. He said the very least that Joe could do was refill our glasses and go ahead and bring dessert.

Go Bryan!

We'd have been laughing about what a great time we had eating bad food if we'd been treated decently!

That's so true!
I don't remember our CRT meal at all. But I clearly remember chatting with Mary Poppins and how great she was!

The chef kindly offered to make us any dessert that he could-offering crème brulee

mmmmm.... crème brulee....

Again we declined and said that what we’d ordered would be fine.

Are you crazy?!? Order the crème brulee!!!

I can’t say enough about the kindness of the chef. He did go above and beyond to try to make us happy with our food, including having a new portion of lovely asparagus sent to the table.

I would've (in a normal restaurant) expected the manager, but at least the chef made an effort.

Joe explained that in addition to the dessert trio I'd ordered I was being given the very special crème brulee in honor of my birthday.

Score anyway! woot!

We’d love to be remembering wonderful meals at the Yachtsman and Narcoossees (spoiler!), or remembering what a lovely time we’d had at CRT despite the food. Instead we’re left with memories of being treated more poorly by a CM than we’ve ever been treated –even in the real world.

That really sucks.
Sorry you had such a lousy dinner.
Like you said, more so for the service than for the food.

We’ll be trying lunch on our next visit, and if Joe happens to be assigned to us we’ll politely ask for a different server.

Again... Good call.

After such a long day capped off with a disappointing meal, the smart thing to do would be leave the park, get a good night’s sleep, and start fresh the next day.

Oh, I so want to say something here....

But I'll restrain myself.

I have never been accused of doing the smart thing.

Oh, look. She goes ahead and does it for me!
Isn't that nice?

I knew we’d still have time to hit the 9 o’clock M&G with Tiana and Naveen if we got in line right then. Bryan thought it was a very bad, very risky idea. If we missed them again Maddie would likely be devastated and the evening well and truly lost. I persisted, confident that if we did meet them they could save the day.

That's right. Gamble with your daughter's feelings.
Kidding!
If there's one thing I've learned, it's to trust a mother's instincts.

Those lovely young women had decided that they’d like to watch Maddie and Annie have their turns meeting Tiana and Naveen and would rather go after them. It seems like such a simple thing, but it was such a redeeming moment for us that I won’t soon forget it.

Nope.
Not just "such a simple thing".
It's those "simple things" that make the biggest difference, don't you think?

“How do you know where to look for him?” Naveen quickly responded “Second star to the right!” and that was good enough for Maddie.

I wonder how often that comes up?
Quick response!

Tiana patiently told him she’d rather just wear it.

Men.
They just have no clue, right?

I know I don't.

:rotfl: That's hilarious!

This one just kills me. She looks so tiny!

In real life, Maddie is 6'2''.

Not only did she leave happy, but so did Bryan and I. There's just something special about watching such wonderful characters interact with a child who loves them so very much. We were both so glad that we'd gambled and won. We'd gotten our magic back.

Agree.
100%.

I really like that one.

Up Next: We get Wild

Can't wait! Thanks for the update(s) Shanickitty! :goodvibes

My girl Drag Queen Aurora was next.
:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao: That just cracks me up...

Photopass photographers had been scarce the whole trip, so despite the fact that we were wearing ponchos and two-thirds of us were having ice cream I made us stop. These turned out to be some of my favorite PP pics.
Exactly! Because it isn't some random, posed picture. It's real. It's the 3 of you having fun on a damp day at Disney and enjoying ice cream! :thumbsup2

As we started to walk away Maddie slipped and fell
Was it on the wooden bridge over by that M&G and Liberty Square? I may or may not have had issues crossing that thing in the rain before... :rolleyes1

I have to preface this by saying that I’ve been absolutely dreading writing this review. I struggled with glossing over it or skipping it all together, but in the end I decided that I’m going to post the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here goes…
I've said it before, but I always appreciate your candid approach to dining reviews. I'd be disappointed if you didn't tell it like it was. :thumbsup2

At the end of 10 long weeks CRT emerged the victor, chosen overwhelmingly as the favorite WDW restaurant of my DIS friends.
I'm still disappointed with how that bracket played out.

Yeah... that definitely sets a negative tone.

when was the last time any of you sat down at a meal that cost $70 a head and weren’t given water automatically?
And that's the point... Yes, you're paying for the experience of eating there, but if I'm dropping that much on a meal, I at least expect the service to be better than average.

:thumbsup2 It had to be done.

When the chef appeared, Bryan kindly explained that the food wasn’t great and that the asparagus was kind of gray and flaccid, but that Joe had been the biggest issue throughout the night, and that our every interaction with him had been an unpleasant one.
Please tell me Joe was standing there to hear this... Maybe he'd finally take the hint.

I think I'd put that in the notes on my ADR. Anybody but Joe. :rotfl2::lmao:

I'm glad that Maddie still managed to have a good time and enjoy the princesses. And it was definitely great of the chef to come out and do his best to make things right. But service like that would definitely ruin the experience.

But I just have to say that we were considering this for our upcoming trip. None of us has ever been to CRT... and we're thinking about trying it out. I don't know what impact this review has on our decision, but the whole $70/plate or 2 TS credits is already enough to make me think twice. :lmao:

After such a long day capped off with a disappointing meal, the smart thing to do would be leave the park, get a good night’s sleep, and start fresh the next day.

I have never been accused of doing the smart thing.
When you make a statement like this right after talking about CRT, I thoroughly expected things to snowball. I'm thankful that I was wrong! :rotfl2:

That was a nice touch of extra magic from some other guests when Maddie and her new friend were allowed to meet Tiana first. And the characters were great! You always seem to have that kind of luck. Just when things aren't going great, Maddie seems to have one of those "perfect" interactions with a princess that just saves the day. :thumbsup2

"Oh, we don't need anything. We're happy with nothing. So I assume you will be too, when that's what you get for your tip."
I think we found the perfect response! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

Sorry to hear about your sub-par CRT experience. :( I'm excited to keep reading more updates though. I love your trip reports; they are fantastic! What a joy it is to have a princess for a daughter princess:
