I'm making two identical recipe books for my sons (they're a bit young yet but I thought I could build them up gradually!) so when they've flown the nest  they can recreate some of our favourite family recipes. I've got some Hungarian recipes from my mother-in-law, and some that I've used from magazines and others that I use regularly (you know how every cookbook has ONE page covered in mess while the rest are clean  ). I've even taken photos at various stages during cooking some of the items, or my kid baking cakes and mince pies. But I've got a few problems

1. Where can I find good stickers and embellishments with a home cooking theme? (bear in mind i'm in the UK and we don't have the range you do!)

2. I thought I would print out the instructions to avoid confusion (my writing is awful!) but add journalling and "romance of the recipe" in handwriting, but should I print on ordinary (i.e. white A4) paper, or card stock? And what size? Does vellum work well?

3. Will printed background papers "fight" with the pictures (think a big saucepan of spaghetti sauce....)?

Any tips gratefull received! Just to add to the limitaitons they're 7 x 7 albums (CM Special offer - I'm a sucker for a bargain!)

I'm new to scrapping, so I can't offer any suggestions, but I do have to say what a great thing you are doing. My family has been trying to recreate several recipies because they were lost without being written down. Great idea! Your kids will appriciate it down the road.

I've done 2 big recipe projects. First I printed 3x5 recipe cards for DDIL as a shower gift - family recipes, Disney recipes, etc. For the most part that size worked well. I did need to print a few as "double" cards. The titles were 14 pt and the text was mostly 11 pt - with a few at 12 because they were so sparse & a few at 10 because they were so full. I used a lot of clipart on the recipes. And I generally use 2 columns of ingredients at the top of the recipe. Those were a good size to read - even for me with my bifocals! ;)

If you're interested, PM me with your email address & I'll send you a couple pages. There were 4 recipes per page, done in Word. I have a large Fiskars rotary cutter that I used to cut the cardstock.

My other big project was a set of family recipes for my sisters last Christmas. I used an 8x9 scrapbook for this. I wallpapered the pages with a combo of PP & CS. I printed the recipes on white CS, used a variety of stickers (CM has some nice ones), some "Jolee's by You", and photos of the people from whom the reicpes originated. Most of my photos were B&W and were matted to coordinate with the wallpaper. I didn't feel that there was any real conflict between the PP & the photos - even the color ones.

My "romance of the recipe" was worked into the cooking instructions for the most part. The only handwriting in mine were the names of the people in the photos.

Sadly, I worked right up to the last minute to finish them so I didn't get a chance to scan them. :( However, you might be able to convince MsSocks to take a photo & post it of one of the pages. She's my younger sister & has one of them.

Good luck with your project!!

I did a much simplier project for my daughter a couple of years ago. I only used the patterned paper to divide sections (i.e. main dishes, desserts, appetizers, etc.). This made it very easy to find the different sections and the recipie you are looking for.

My project was much simplier than yours so I don't have much advice on the other questions, sorry.

One thing though - be sure it is in sheet protectors. Like you said, cookbooks get messy.

Good point! I won't let anyone even look at my pages til I get the page protectors on! :thumbsup2

I just saw a bunch of cute recipe books, stickers, etc. in the scrapbook section at Walmart. You might check Walmart.com to see if they have them listed for sale. I'm sorry I didn't see the brand name.
