We will need to rent a scooter for Grandma. Are there places to get them when you get off the shuttle at the park? Do we need to get one each day at each park? Not sure how it works?? Thanks

there are a couple ways to do this. You can rent one at the park when you arrive, but if you are going in a busy time of year, there is a finite amount of scooters per park, so you might have just a wheel chair. Unless it has gone up since we rented one in parks 2 years ago when my husband hurt himself, it was 50 dollars for the rental, with a 50 dollar deposit each day for rental. But you can't take it back to the resorts if you are staying on site. this averages out to be about 350 for 7 days, with the fluctuation 50 dollar deposit you get back each time you rent one.

The other way to do it is to rent one from a rental company (orlandoscooter, apple scooter and buena vista scooter are some) these can be delivered to where you are staying, you have constant use of the scooter and don't have to chance not having one at the parks if you are dependent on one. Going rates vary, but I priced it out to about 240 to 250 for 7 days.

My mom used a scooter last year. We rented a scooter from apple scooters. That way she had it available all the time-from resort room to bus, all day in parks, back to bus, bus to room, ect.

The DISabilities board on here is great for advice on scooters.

Our last trip my mom ended up renting one as she had dbl knee replacement and one did not heal properly. She did not want to risk not having one each day at the parks and it was cheaper to rent from an offsite rental place. I did look them up online and checked BBB. They delivered to the resort and picked it up at the luggage claim at the resort check in.

I agree with Carseatmommy. Go over to the disAbilities board. They have all kinds of information about ECV's- where to rent them, things you need to know about using them at the resorts. All the details about how to use them in the parks.

have been on a ECV ow 6 years as have MS and it is a long way from resort rooms to say food courts or bus stops and ever further from buses to entrance to any park. so I rent from walkers mobility for the entire trip and I call ahead and the ecooter is there when I arrive and get off the ME and I have it 24/7 and recharge in the room each night or can plug it up outside your door in some resorts and you just get in line and wait your turn and load it on the bus is like parallel parking a car. They are much cheaper to rent off site by the week as well. If you rent in the parks you wil have to walk from the bus into the park and then get the scooter and of course if I could do that I would not need one. Plus renting off site they ask height and weight so it is better fit for me than a large one the WDW has.

Definitely rent from an outside company. The walk from the parking lot to the entrance can be unbearable for people with mobility issues. Then you won't have to worry if scooters are available at the parks.

. . . 50 dollars for the rental, with a 50 dollar deposit each day for rental . . .

1) Plus, they now put a $250 hold on your credit/debit card.
2) They have had a rash of strollers "walk off" the property.

100% agree. If Grandma doesn't have her own wheels, getting something from offsite is the way to go. She would have it 24/7 and it's delivered to your resort. Just think about how she would get from the bus stop to the front of the park at the beginning of the day and then from the park exit to the bus at the end of the day. And then having to deal with renting something every day and returning it at night. Then doing the whole thing all over again the next day.

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
Post 2 of that thread has pretty much all the information about ECVs that you need. There are web links and phone numbers for the companies most recommended by DIS posters.

If we rent a scooter from outside the park, do we need to stay in an accessable room so the scooter goes to the room for the night? Or is there a place that the resort can lock it up on the main floor?

or can plug it up outside your door in some resorts
Please don't do this. First, the rental is a contract; you're responsible for anything that happens to the ECV during the rental period (other than normal wear & tear).

Leaving the ECV outside a room with inside hallways has the potential for making the hallways difficult to navigate for other guests and for CMs. Leaving it outside a room that opens to the outside also has the potential of weather damage. Both leave the ECV vulnerable to vandalism or worse.

If we rent a scooter from outside the park, do we need to stay in an accessable room so the scooter goes to the room for the night? Or is there a place that the resort can lock it up on the main floor?

You don't need an accessible room. In any room, you might need to move a little furniture but you'll be able to keep the ECV in the room.

As above, you're responsible for it. Yes, Bell Services will hold it until you arrive and after you leave, as the go-between for you and the rental company, but they're not set up to store your medical equipment overnight nightly.

It will fit in your room.

Depending on where you plan to stay, even non HA rooms may have room for the scooter to be kept in the room. I do not know if the resorts would keep the scooters and charge them overnight, but if so, it would probably be at the baggage check area where they are picked up. Depending on the resort, this can be quite a distance from your room.
