Scooters
A popular way to buzz around the island is on a scooter. You must have riding experience to rent one; expect to pay about $25 per day. A permit is required. Scooters are available for rent at several locations on Seven Mile Beach: Cayman Cycle Rentals ( 345-945-4021) has rentals at Treasure Island Resort, the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, and Coconut Place. Soto Scooters and Car Rentals at Coconut Place ( 345-945-4652) also offers scooter rentals.

You have to ride on the left in the Caymans. For this reason, and because scooters are very dangerous in high-traffic areas, I would recommend you consider renting a small car or jeep to tour the island - there is a lot to see, but safety should come first.

We met up with a couple last year on a Carnival Cruise and they had just been in a terrible accident in St. Thomas. They were both scraped up very badly and her jaw was wired shut. They spent half the cruise in the hospital in St. Thomas and then flying to several islands to catch up with and re-board the ship! These guys in a car tried to get them to pull over, and when they would not, the car ran into the back of their scooter and knocked them off the road.

While this is unusual, I am sure, it is something to consider, especially if the cost of a jeep is not much more.

If you're already comfortable and experienced with riding two-wheeled motorized vehicles, you'll probably be OK. My sister and brother in law have a motorcycle and they don't have any problems. It's still a bit dangerous given the traffic and driving on the left side of the road.

If you're not experienced, I wouldn't pick someplace like that to learn. I've never done it on Cayman, but I did wipe out twice in one day in Bermuda. I turned the thing in after the second spill (no serious injuries, just some nasty road rash) and won't ever do it again. We saw plenty of people with similar and more serious injuries, and heard a number of stories of fatalities.

We've spent a lot of time in Grand Cayman and local/residents refer to tourists on scooters as "speed bumps"!!! There are accidents with them quite often from what I've heard.

I think you can rent a small car for the day through Avis Cayman for about the same and you can get 4 people in the car. Safer and you can do see alot more I'm sure!
