ScoJo's Running Down a Dream Journal (comments welcome)

Congrats on officially starting your marathon training. :cheer2:

BB7 has been fun to watch this season. Every single word that comes out of Dr. W's mouth is a lie, but no one seems to have figured that out.

Have fun at WDW next month. What a great trip you and your DD will have.

Hey Scott...I was just thinking about you this morning. Wondering how the training is going. And wouldn't you know by the time I can actually post on your journal...I see you beat me by posting on mine! :thumbsup2

Hope all is going well with you!

We miss ya around here! :wave2:

Hello everyone and thanks for the posts :)

So I don't have all of my data from the past week of running, but I felt the need to post anyway since it's been so long.

I successfully completed the first week of marathon training without any glitches!! Now, only 19 more to go ;) I ran 40 min on Monday, ran for 40 min on Tuesday, did 30 min on the elliptical on Wednesday, ran for 40 min on Thursday, did 30 min on the elliptical on Friday and ran 6 miles on Saturday before taking a rest day on Sunday. Whew....I can tell you that I wasn't sore, but my body definitely knew I'd worked out for 6 days straight and Sunday's relaxation was a very welcome thing indeed.

I encountered my first bad run in a long time last night. I think it was a combination of eating food that caused a bit of indigestion along with running too soon after dinner. I was plagued with breathing issues and side stitches, along with stopping at one point thinking I was gonna hurl (sorry if that's TMI lol)....BUT....I did the 40 minutes anyway and completed 4 miles. Walking was fine so I busted out another 2 miles or so in place of doing crunches & pushups (which I have added to every post run stretch routine).

I have really changed my eating habits as well, thanks to GREAT advice from a running buddy (can you guess who?)....the old me would skip breakfast and eat a big lunch around 12 noon followed by a big dinner around 6:30, then a late snack around 10 on some nights. The new me now does something like this.....a smoothie for breakfast (thanks again to the running buddy for a GREAT recipe!!) around 7am, a breakfast or granola bar around 10am, a healthy lunch around 12:30pm, fruit or a granola bar around 3pm, and a healthy but carb loaded (60-70% of the plate) dinner around 6-7pm. I was very hesitant to be eating all the time for fear that I'd put on weight, but the exact opposite happened, I lost a pound! I'm still consuming between 70-100 oz of water thru the day and another 50oz or so at night. It seems like so much food and water but I think my body is becoming used to being fueled so often that it burns up those calories more efficiently. Who knew that eating more could be so beneficial? :) ;)

In other news...

Got the Cheetah Girls tickets thanks to a special presale offered by my local arena's mailing list, we've got great seats! We even purchased the album a few days ago and my DD is really really excited to be going. She's now in the process of figuring out what to wear (good thing I'm going with her ;) )...now I have to figure out which heavy metal t-shirt I'll wear to the show LOL

Dr. Will is my hero. Totally unreal how he has that whole house figured out. I'm baffled each week at how everyone else just slips right into his plan. He's got my vote for Best Reality TV Contestant of All Time.

WDW is just two and a half weeks away and the excitement is starting to build. We changed around some plans yesterday and started mapping out lots of crazy ideas for photos and video.....we'll be shooting our own version of Krista's Resort TV Must see Attractions (with a twist) and a very special Pirates of the Carribean themed video from the Halloween Party. We are also participating in a photo scavenger hunt that should provide for some very interesting shots from around the world :)

Enough rambling for now. Thanks for stopping by and I hope everyone has a great day!

Wow, Scott, WAY to GO on your training!!

WDW is only 2.5 weeks away?? Hard to believe - seems you were just 'thinking' about going.

Have a great rest of the week!

Wow, Scott...you're doing GREAT. I totally agree that what you eat has a LOT to do with how you run. I'm looking forward to some good runs now that I'm back on track with my eating.

Are you willing to share your pics and possibly your videos when you get back? Sounds like you have a LOT of fun planned!!

Oh, and Dr. Will has this thing SO wrapped up! What a great season, huh?

Scott, you have done such a great job with your healthier lifestyle change. You should be really proud of everything you have accomplished and are going to accomplish with your good training! Great job! :thumbsup2

Your Father/Daughter WDW trip sounds like it is going to be a blast  , and yes, how Dr. Will has managed to mesmerize the entire house into doing his wishes a second time, is truly amazing. Unlike the season two group, these people all know how he operates, and yet, he gets away with it again.

Thanks for the posts!! And yes Kim, I'll be happy to share photos and/or video once we return :) I've gotta write that long and detailed trip report first though (see Amy's Journal ;) )

So I knocked out 30 minutes on the elliptical on Tuesday night. I did some 'fancy elliptical work' by cranking up 'Reverse Mode' and boy did that hurt LOL Running backwards on that thing is a challenge, I just can't seem to get my groove on...the motion is so unnatural. BUT, it's supposed to be good for you so I gave it a shot. I don't know if I'm gonna attempt it again or not...we'll just have to see on Friday evening.

I did the 4 mile 'hood run last night and completed it in 38:25....seems my regular average pace is now between 9:45 and 10:00 mpm.

Tonight I've gotta get back out there and run for 40 minutes again, followed by a 30 min XT on Friday night and a 6 mile LR on Saturday. Then I'll take a day off before running in the U.S. 10K Classic on Monday morning.

Other than that..It's been business as usual for the last couple of days.

I hope everyone has a great day and a great Labor Day extended weekend!!

Hey Scott...great job with the training. You are a MACHINE! Good luck with your 10K. Can't wait to hear all about it.

And yes, I am looking forward to your trip report again. I read last years and it was awesome!

Our little hijack on Amy's thread will help her out when she comes off her Disney high! :rotfl:

Scott,

You are the man! :thumbsup2 You are doing a great job with your training and with your healthy eating habits! :goodvibes You will do a great job at the Marathon! :woohoo:

Your father/daughter trip to WDW sounds like a lot of fun! I am looking forward to your trip report especially since I can't go in September. ;)

Keep up the good work, Scott! :cheer2:

Wait- You did 4 miles in 38:25?!?! Wow! That rocks. Impressive. I did 3 miles in 45 mins. Not so impressive.

You are doing great Scott! :Pinkbounc

Hey Scott....omg...you speed demon. I think I'm going to end up chasing you at the marathon ;). How in the world am I supposed to keep up with you and your ultra fast pace these days???? :confused3 Guess I better get my butt in gear :rotfl: . Need a drill sargeant or something to help me keep going, especially after today's run which nearly did me in for good I think.

Anyway....'nuff about me. You are rockin! Totally killing each and every run. I have to say that you are the one that keeps me on my toes....that competitive side of me wants to try to match your times. So take it a little easy once in a while so I don't die trying :teeth: .

I know that US 10K race is going to be really tough and quite a challenge. BUT....you are so ready and so up for the challenge I bet you surprise yourself and do a fantastic job. Just don't push it too hard...remember we ARE in training for the marathon ;). Try to enjoy the torturous, hilly, ridiculously impossible 10K. Yeah....good luck with that :rotfl2: . But seriously, have a great race and I'll be thinking about you as I enter into post-WDW recovery.

And your WDW trip is nearly here so you must be totally stoked. I'm SOOOOO excited for you! Wow...that is going to be one amazing week...you really are going to have so much fun. Can't wait to see pictures!!! :goodvibes No doubt that I'll be wishing I was back there at the world! Just look out for the food factor....Disney sure knows how to stuff us with good eats :).

GOOD LUCK MONDAY. YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!!! :cheer2:

Well.........how was the race??? :confused3 :teeth:

Hello!!

Thanks a million to you guys for stopping by....sooo nice to have some support!!

So I finished up last week like this:
Thursday - Completed 4.1 miles in the 'hood for my 40 minute run
Friday - Did 30 minutes on the elliptical
Saturday - Decided to run the completely flat trail course at a local park as opposed to the hilly course around the house since the race was coming up in two days. It had rained the night before and I got up early to run which created a slightly eerie scene. I was reminded of Stephen King when I started off my run...grass valley surrounded by trees and a river on one side, fog rolling off of the river, random animals (rabbits) jumping out of the grass, totally dark except for few lights around the course, big puddles along the trail and a dude in a hockey mask chasing me with a knife. Ok, so he didn't have a hockey mask and he wasn't chasing me but there was another dude there...made for a very interesting morning. So I did the 6 miles in 55:19, an average pace of 9:13 mpm. I felt great and it was a good tune up for Monday.
Sunday - rest! Did nothing all day :)

That brings me to yesterday where I took part in "America's Greatest 10k" the U.S. Classic 10k. "The one with the tough hills". I was pretty focused due to the challenging course and although it was cool to see the hot air baloons lifting off, and the parachuters making their way down for the start and the rollerbladers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes going off before us, my mind was anxiously anticipating the road ahead.

So my immediate goal upon starting was to make it up the first hill and then make it up the massive second hill without walking. That would be a great accomplishment and would suffice for not ending with a good time. So I started off quickly (knowing of the impending doom ahead) and crossed the first mile in 8:45....I hit the hill during the second mile and did what I wanted...ran up the whole thing ;) :goodvibes I did a small victorious fist pump and then soon after crossed the 2 mile mark in 18:15 (meaning I just turned a 9:30 mile two split). I was feeling really good during mile 3, finishing it in 9:03...and then it kind of hit me that I was really running a great race. So I ran up ALL of the hills! I figured 'why not' I felt great...why not push it the whole way and see what time I could finish in. Well, I crossed the finish line in 57:44!! :woohoo: A new personal best 10k time for me on the toughest course yet!! It averages out to a 9:17 mpm pace, which I never dreamed I could do. Afterwards, I refueled and felt awesome!

Looking back, I really think that running hills all week and then doing the hills on the long runs really built up my endurance and allowed me to tame that course. So I guess I won't complain next time when I see the now not so big hill in my neighborhood and just run up the dumb thing :) Maybe I'll even call it a few names for good measure (Amy, didn't you mention something about this once LOL).

So today I still feel great and will continue the training without missing a beat. Tonight calls for a 30 minute XT session. Followed by a 40 min run on Wed, 40 min run on Thurs, 30 min XT on Fri and a nice 7 mile long run on Saturday.

Week 2 of marathon training is now complete...and everything is going great! September is here and I can't believe that the big race is only 4 months away!

Offtopic -- not much to report, other than being jealous of everyone's trips to WDW recently (Kim...Amy...)... .lol...it's so good to be headed down to Orlando again in two weeks. I hooked DD up with an awesome looking Elizabeth Swann dress off of ebay, let's just hope it gets here in time. So now it's crunch time and time to start gathering everything together that we want to take with us....I love the excitement generated by a vacation, especially a Disney one!

Anyway...that's it for now...I hope everyone has a great week!!!

AWESOME JOB IN THE RACE SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!!! Scott, I'm sooooo proud of you! Really, that pace is amazing. And considering what the course was like, I'm totally blown away by your performance. You've come soooo far in your running and it's truly inspiring and motivational to me :goodvibes . So thanks...for being so positive here and continuing to challenge me as a runner!!!

We totally expect a full detailed trip report including, but not limited to:
exercises and runs completed and where, a photo slide show in chronological order so it's easy to follow, a list of what resorts you stayed in,a description of every place you ate..what time you ate and what you had to eat, a detailed list of rides ridden along with relevant wait times and post ride photo scans, a brief statement about the condition that each park was in including rides that were down or running exeptionally well, a report on CM friendliness, a cost anaylsis of snack items purchased in resorts vs. in the parks, a summary of the temperatures broken down by the hour with actual temps along with the ReelFeel temps, and most importantly....a paragraph or two about why you didn't say goodbye to us before leaving

And thanks for always making me laugh on my journal :teeth: ....which reminds me... I'll email you the spreadsheets and reports of my vacation as per your request. You'll probably need approximately 3 hours to download the files, but you're at work so it shouldn't be a problem. I've included a great deal of detail. Such as on document 5, titled "Why is it so *&#$ hot...oh yeah it's August in Florida", you'll note the exact time of each afternoon rainstorm along with an essay on why you should visit the parks on days that hurricanes are expected. In addition I've included crowd level data which I've extrapalated out to your vacation week factoring in the touring plans and TGM expected crowd levels, you'll find this in the report "Free Dining....Yes It Did Impact Crowd Levels....(and we're the only family there who couldn't take advantage of it)" . You'll see on page 52 of the document entitled "FP's Are Your Friend...unless the machine eats your annual pass" that I have even included a daily chart breakdown of fast pass return times, noting when FPs were out for the day for the big rides such as Soarin and EE. There's a special section, for entertainment purposes, on all the comments I heard from those in stand-by....including but not limited to "How Can We Get One of those Easy Passes"...."Must be nice to be a VIP"....and my personal favorite "HEY.....YOU'RE CUTTING!!!". On page 100 of document entitled "Why Haven't They Refurbished This Freakin' Ride" you'll see a listing of the condition of all parks on a scale of 1 - 10. Also included in that document is a daily account of ride breakdowns and how long it took to return them to service, which further includes data stating how long the lines grew during said repair. On page 20,000 of "We Ate Like We Were On The Free Dining Plan (but did I mention we were the only family in WDW who were NOT on the free dining plan)" you'll see menus, along with my personal reviews, of the approximately 100 places we ate over the course of the week. Along with menu information, alcohol content of all drinks and wait staff ratings I've included calorie information and a special section on food selections at each dining location that are best for marathon uber-athletes. I thought you'd find that particularly interesting. And finally, since we are discussing running a marathon here on this journal, I couldn't leave you without a research paper on running in disney entitled "Why Are These People Looking at me Funny...Oh Yeah It's Because I'm a Sweaty Mess"...I've included all the backdoor entrances to the various resorts so you don't have to be seen dripping wet in the lobby.

Hope this helps. And again....I am sooo proud of you!!!! :grouphug:

Now let's see if I can get my butt in gear and get out there to run today.

Omg!!! I Can't Stop Laughing!!

:rotfl: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Scott - HOLY COW!!! That was unbelievable!! Congrats to you on a job VERY well done! You must be on cloud 9!! :cloud9: I continue to be amazed and inspired by you and Amy at how you keep on going and pushing to new heights.

Amy - Why are you NOT a writer?? That was awesome!! Had me laughing out loud at work! :rotfl: Now, I really do expect a trip report out of you!! :teeth: (oh, and we were the only other people at WDW without the dining plan...free or otherwise)!

HELLO!!

Thanks Amy for the funniest post ever!! And thanks to the rest of you for continued support and encouragement...it means so much :)

I completed my crosstraining on Tuesday with 30 minutes on the elliptical and did manage to get out there and run yesterday. Wednesdays are the "fast" runs so I completed my 4 mile course in a personal best time of 36:14....and after those hills on Monday, the ones in mine pale in comparison so I ran up the big one for the first time.

I'm feeling pretty good today...my legs are just a slight bit fatigued due to all of the running but nothing to even get the slightest bit of concern over.

Only difference so far in the marathon training is the food intake!! My gosh...wow...I'm eating everything all day long! I just cannot seem to satisfy my need to eat...i guess my metabolism has changed and my body is using up what it's given (as opposed to using up what used to be stored :) ) Grocery trips are gonna start getting expensive soon LOL :)

That's it for today...hope everyone has a great day!
